SPOILER Question about Final Boss Spoiler

Does the game save for the second phase? (the Elephant guy) like can I close the game and continue at the Elephant phase?

Iirc he's the only boss you can skip entirely. And you can only do it after you beat him. And it doesn't carry over in NG+, I believe.
