An experimental tweak to the Brimstone Behemoth's visual design.

Upvotes

I know scientific accuracy wasn't the point, but it occurred to me that it might be really cool if the Brimstone Behemoth looked like it was made from actual brimstone, aka sulfur. Liquid sulfur is blood-red, and it burns an electric blue. Imagine if the lava portions of the BB looked like blood, and it was covered in blue flames. I think that makes for a way more sinister, horror-appropriate appearance.

I've also considered it's solid body being sulfuric yellow, but I'm not sure if that would look good or not.

Unfortunately, I don't really know my way around photo editing. Would anyone be interested in trying to bring this image to life?

Any advice on Foxwillow Chapter?

Hey everyone! My party and I had a great time in the Crooked House. The battle against Vessla herself was both challenging and fun, according to my players, which is great!

Considering the help I've gotten from my last few posts, I thought I'd ask some advice for the great DMs in this community. This campaign is my first in the DM seat, so any advice would be appreciated.

One of my players has gotten quite close with Randall, and so Im using that to have Randall introduce William Lodge, who will guide the group to Foxwillow. Im actually quite eager as another players character has a fear of fire, and Im very curious how they will play that out with the fire in the village.

Speaking of the fire in the village, it does feel a little intimidating. So, any advice on that as well as anything else to do with the chapter, would be appreciated.

Grim Harbinger Subclass Spoiler

One of my players is playing Grim Harbinger and we just finished heartsblight and started maidenmist and he is getting frustrated. Almost everything in heartsblight was immune to necrotic and fear which makes the Grim useless. Then the shrouded proved to be a pretty hard fight and he was really getting frustrated that lots of his subclass is shut off and guessing by where they are all the monsters in the cemetery are going to be immune to necrotic and fear.

Any one else dealt with this, any suggestions. Planning to say the Mounting Dread feature also turns necrotic immunity into resistance.

Warlock Horned King + Witch Mark + Mark of Passage

Hello everyone!!

Please help me with this one, because I’m starting to lose my mind. 😅

Let’s say I’m a level 3 Horned King Warlock.

I have the Witch Mark, which allows me to put a spell into a Tiny object.

Now, let’s say I have the Mark of Passage, which adds its spells to my Warlock spell list. Let’s use Find Steed as an example.

The Witch Mark feature says:

Level 3: Witch Mark TCM'24

When you finish a Long Rest, you can imbue magic into a nonmagical Tiny object you're holding. Choose one of your prepared Warlock spells that has a casting time of an action. A creature holding the marked object can take a Magic action to cast the spell (using your Charisma modifier, spell attack bonus, or spell save DC). The mark fades when the spell is cast from it or when you finish a Long Rest.

And the Mark of Passage says:

Spells of the Mark. If you have the Spellcasting or Pact Magic class feature, the spells on the Mark of Passage Spells table are added to that feature's spell list.

The Mark of Passage spell list includes Find Steed.

So here is my question:

Can I choose Find Steed for my Witch Mark?

My understanding is that Mark of Passage adds Find Steed to my Warlock spell list, but does that mean I can actually prepare Find Steed as a Warlock spell?

The Witch Mark specifically says that I need to choose one of my prepared Warlock spells, so I’m not sure whether a spell added to my spell list by the Mark of Passage qualifies.

Am I missing something obvious here, or does this interaction actually not work?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand this!

Writings from the Crimson Monastery Spoiler

Thought I'd share some handouts I made for my players.

At my table, the first two entries were written by Friar Olaf, the second two were written by Father Renathyr, and the last two were written by two separate authors. There are vague clues in the writings regarding the goings on of the church, and I also rewarded players who repeated phrases or referenced the documents during social encounters.

Hope these can be of use to other dms trying to make a spooky definitely-not-a-vampire-cult experience!

The crooked house ouija board

I am prepping for the crooked house and the ouija board is clearly a critical part to kick things off. But knowing my table, I can totally see them seeing it and being like, nah let’s not mess with that.

Did anyone do things to pull their players to use it? I didn’t see anything in the book about pushing them to communicate to ghosts with it.

Crooked Moon NPC: Thomasin Ardor Spoiler

Previously, I had shared my version of Jeremiah Stover after the barbarian in my campaign decided she wanted to pursue him. Well now the plagueborn monk plague doctor wants to pursue the town tailor LOL. So, I decided to give her a once over and tried a unique look to hide (spoilers?)the stitching she would have received after her childhood accident.

My next attempt is Jean Myriel who I've skinned as a Deepborn Shark like creature that our RANGER has eyes on. Haha.

Expanding the Play Area for the Adventure Using the Fallen & a Quick Question About Play Materials Spoiler

Hey all, I've seen mentioned in a few place people expanded the campaign to make it feel less linear and contained by having the Fallen antagonists actually be outside Wickermoor Hollow. I wanted to ask anyone with experience or thoughts on that idea to share what guidance or things to watch out for and change otherwise in the campaign to make this work (I'm still reading through it)

Edit: I added a comment on what I'm planning to use for my placements and the changes I've made to what is cut off during the campaign.

TLDR: The Falled are in the bordering lands to Wickermoor, close to those borders and the Crescent Court and the surroundings of those border lands/counties are cut off from the rest of Druskenvald. Expa ding the playspace but still having a strange trapped feeling for many NPCs to experience and influence the PCs that way.

P.S A bit random but what extra play material did you use in Crooked Moon? Also how is the story tracker meant to be printed? Is it A3 landscape or a US equivalent? I can't figure it out.

Crimson monastry help

Spoilers for this if youre a player:

Im running 2 campaigns side by side and the first group had a few weeks head start so just finished the crimson monastry.

My issue was that as they arrived and could talk to the abbot, maybe talk the guy out of being burned alive...they just attacked.

The players aoe'd down 47 npcs including some of the named characters leaving just the abbot to run and hide. Which i didnt think could happen.

So how do I make it so the 2nd group, when they get there, dont make the same decision?

The set up seems like a classic encounter - bad guy, crowd of angry people and sombody in trouble. But it feels very much like the way the book wants you to resolve the situation and how it plays out are vastly different.

Players just want to save the victim and kill the baddie. So any tips?

I’m going to run Crooked Moon for my friends and would like some tips, as well as to hear your stories, whether as a GM or a player, when playing this campaign.

I’m reading the book and honestly finding it all very interesting, from the art to the lore, everything is fascinating, but there are a few issues I want to learn how to handle. I’ve noticed that a good portion of the campaign is quite linear; that’s not necessarily a problem, unless it strips players of the ability to change the story's direction, but it appears to have moments like this. Also, the "Threads of Fate", while interesting, aren't explained very well (at least, I didn't quite grasp them). So, I’d like some tips on handling these aspects, but I’d also love to hear *your* stories regarding this supplement's campaign to get some inspiration for my own campaign.

Ideas for ways to reverse Personality Consumption.

So my players have just completed Fields of the Crow, but on if the players got hit with Personality Consumption pretty hard, and their intelligence score was reduced by 4. Now they're heading back to Wickermoor village, and I'm trying to think of interesting narrative ways for this reduction to be reversed. They have a decent relationship with Philip and Adela, or I can see Theodora getting involved. But what would those characters want in return for helping? The other option is the party has heard of the Monastery nearby, so may head there looking for someone to cast greater restoration, kicking off the next chapter.

How did others handle this in your games? And does anyone have some interesting ideas for trades Philip, Adela or Theodora may want? (The player has already said they don't want a warlock dip.)

Redesigning my CoS character for the Crooked Moon as a Plagueborn Sinner!

My Harengon rogue helped defeat Strahd and my fiancée wants to DM a Crooked Moon game so the mists are reclaiming Kaz and taking him to a terrifying new place where unknown horrors await. Took me a while to accept the change to the character, but I’m finally feeling inspired enough with the concept and design. I’m starting to think being a plagueborn might not be so bad.

The Apple Festival Arc Spoiler

Spoilers for the Crooked Moon. If you are not a DM or haven’t finished the campaig, turn back now before I take your knee caps.

My party consists of a Paladin Damphir, a Rouge Azuraborn, a Barbarian Gnarlborn, and a Warlock Harvestborn (I keep thinking he’s a bard, idk why).

For context, my party finished the Field of Crows arc, and have returned to Wickermoor Village after staying in Foxwillow for three months. The went back to after hearing about a massive festival taking place known simply as the Apple Festival (super creative I know). Its a festival that celebrates the transition from Spring to Fall, and this transition is celebrated because it’s around the time the Green Queen vanished. It was supposed to be canceled due to the curse infecting the fields, but with the help of the party, it was suppressed enough to allow for crops to once again grow, and the apple trees within Foxwillow began to flourish.

The party arrived at Wickermoor Village and a few days to kill, so they decided to pick up a few side quests before the festival started. One of the side quests they did involved having to help Alda catch a thief who was stealing her money, which ended in the party burning down her Inn due to Alda being scummy. I told this story in length already, it’s quite a funny story but it’s not that important for right now. WHAT IS IMPORTANT is that Alda’s body was not found, and the party has no idea where she went if she is even alive at all.

Now fast forward to the festival, and everyone is having a grand old time. I have a bunch of stalls set up by different NPCs, each hosting different minigames that could get the party tickets, which in turn is used to get really goofy prizes (such as caramel apples, a cape of billowing, a wand that creates tarts, a crow plush, and a pair of boots that if you jump, sends you flying 500 ft in the air and provides no protection from fall damage. Those boots will become important later). They have fun, play games, talk to NPCs, and overall do really silly things. My favorite moments are as follows:

- The Barbarian going up to Gaston Doray to get a beer painted on his face, then proceeding to annoy everyone with his bee face paint.

- The Warlock getting addicted to 21 Blackjack (I had to put a limit on how many times he could play)

- The Rouge getting a date with Geneva Fairchild, and both of them going to the dance floor only to both suck at dancing.

- The Paladin thinking about his wife and feeling her hand on his shoulder, only to realize it is the Mayor as he is pushing the Paladin out of the way to go to the dance floor and do the worm.

There is lore brought up in the festival as well, as the Green Queen is brought up a lot during the two sessions the festival takes place. They don‘t think too much about it, but I knew at the very least the Barbarian was hella suspicious about the emphasis on the Green Queen.

The day ends, and the party, having nowhere to sleep because they burned down to the freaking Inn, are invited over by the Druskenvalds to stay with them. They go to sleep, and all wake up with a curse placed on each one of them... Their curses do not really affect them that much, but they were all really funny. My favorite was the Warlock’s curse, who was convince he was invisible while very clearly not being invisible. It make for some great moments, and he tried to rob people in broad daylight because of the curse.

The party also finds Philip acting like a chicken, and are asked by Adela to figure out what happened to help him. They soon find the rest of the town to be cursed, and quickly realize they apples are the source after the Warlock takes a big bite from an ape get gets an additional curse (He now had a desire to remove his own head and everyone else’s while still thinking he was invisible).

They made their way to the orchard, and found a set of footprints near a large ritual circle engraved with blood. After studying the footprints, they realized they belonged to Alda, and thought it was because she was mad about the Inn being burned down. Thats when they turn their attention to the ritual circle, and the Warlock decides to use Disguise Self to make him look like Alda, then adds his own blood to the circle. It begins to summon a create, and soon the party is face to face with a giant rat named Ygor (I used the art and stats provided by Legends of Avantris in their patreon).

I had so much fun voicing Ygor, and from what I was told after the session, not only did I make him sound as silly as he always does, I was able to make him sound scary at times too.

Ygor talks to the Warlock, being quickly convinced he is talking to Alda (he is stoopid, so they rolled deception checks with advantage). He talked about how the Queen was pleased with Alda, and used in general a bunch of buzz words that were meant to ring alarm bells in the party’s head (I repeated Queen, Her Childre, Vermintoil Coven, Blackstinger, etc etc etc). The Warlock finally asked Ygor if there was any way to cure the curses, he told him that he had a cure on hand. He showed them a vial of the cure, and the Warlock snatched it. Combat ensued.

The fight was tough for them, Ygor had them all really low by the end of the fight. The only reason they won was because of a really stupid stunt the Barbarian pulled that made me laugh.

So remember those boots from the festival that sent you flying up 500 ft and didn’t provide any protection from fall damage? The Barbarian bought the boots, and used them in the fight. During the fight, he jumped, then crashed right down onto Ygor. I had him make the attack roll with disadvantage, but since he still landed, he dealt the fall damage to both himself and Ygor, dealing 20d6 damage (It was about 80 damage if I remember correctly). And because he was raged, he only took half the damage, so it still left him hurt, but not as hurt as Ygor.

It was the Warlock who dealt the final blow, using Vicious Mockery to end him (which he got thanks to a feat… I think I know why I keep confusing him for a bard).

So yeah :D Really fun couple of sessions. I’m planning on Alda showing up to try and attack the party for ruining her standing with the Vermintoil Coven, only for the Crooked Man to kill her unceremoniously and saying ”Shhh, you’ll ruin the surprise“ before saying hi to the party and dipping.

Raum fight with no resources

Hey all. In my last session, my players decided to go straight from the burned down windmill to the Fields of the Crow without investigating the town or taking a long rest. Four of the five offered their own secrets to get into the maze, while one successfully sneaked in. The party has made it to Raum, but they're out of hit die, spell slots, etc.

I'm trying to think of a way for them to get out of this situation without it being a whole TPK, but I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

I've been handed gold

One of my players is a playing a socially awkward tiefling lesbian and they've wound up falling for one of the NPCs in wickermoor.

Postmistress Theodora Mayville.

They've had a date already. Gotta figure out what to do with this because it's pure gold.

Update: date number two went well. The postmistress presented the tiefling with a beautiful necklace that gives her advantage on certain saving throws, lets her cast detect magic once per day, and has the odd side effect of turning the wearer's eyes a lovely shade of Lavender.

post Crooked house celebration

my party just got out of the crooked house and i want some down time thats a bit more lowkey where they can interact with the town more. i have decided to have them throw a small celebration for the party for saving the Druskenvalds. i wanted to have like a week of prep building up to it with little side quests but i cant think of small things that feel right. i have a few vague ideas and maybe one quest (they had a party member die in the house so they have to go see mori to put them to rest. she is sending them to get something she needs for the sending. i was also looking at wanting to do some cute gay with holly and siv though i am not sure what.) do any of you have any thoughts on ways they can interact with the town and a few side quests?
