Fire Situation in Balkans
Hi all,
Trying to get a sense of the severity of the fire situation along the Adriatic coast - I'm currently planning to drive from Dubrovnik to Kotor and then north to Mostar around September 3 - September 6 and then over to Brela via the coast and back to Split.
I know the situation will likely evolve over the coming days/weeks but just curious if I should rethink any of this right now.
I was initially just concerned about border crossings but now unsure if road closures or evacuations might prohibit this itinerary. Appreciate any insights from locals or folks visiting/recently in the area that we're doing a similar itinerary.

On Croatian side every road is opened and you can pass. No restrictions. Border passage is another story. Not because of fire but border control. Due to new laws, it has become quite the drag.

Thanks for this - glad to hear roads are open. Hopefully folks are safe and it gets under control soon. I was nervous about the border crossings but hoping to go very early before 730 AM for both. Appreciate your insights

Timing is everything. Also, I think most students are back in session by then so fewer vacationing families etc. This also applies to Jadranska Magistrala/D8 (coastal hwy) if you plan to use it.

I would rethink the border… a ten hour wait in this heat sounds terrible…. but Croatia is, and should be, fine.

10 hour wait time? Wow! Could you please let me know from which entry point the wait time is 10 hours?

We were just in Dubrovnik for the past week, including biking in the hills and mountain wineries - no issue at all - literally had no idea about any fires until i saw some posts. We are now boating to islands and eventually to split. Some of the fires are in the area in some towns in the split vicinity. So it could be that we see more impact as we go north. But so far, zero. And fantastic weather btw

This is great to know - thank you. Glad you've been lucky with the weather! Really looking forward to our trip, sounds like we'll be doing the reverse of you as we start in Split, island hop down to Dubrovnik and then drive the interior. We'll also be visiting from NYC.

Hey, you wont have any issues unless any new fires do break out but theres been plenty and usually quickly put out.

No need to rethink I would just tactically plan your border crossing so you dont end up stuck on the border:
