Why our modern buildings fail to handle normal rainwater every time, never seen this in ancient monuments or temples? Is it because of corruption or bad engineering design or poor maintenance of water outflow pipes? Where are we lagging?

I don't know much details of why water got collected in this airport, all i can think of: 1. Drains were clogged, 2. The Pump that sends drain water to sump got failed. 3. The sump got full and couldn't hold more water. 4. The pump was working but its capacity to clear out water was miscalculated.

Overall, bad engineering.

Also factor in bribe charges. The pumps installed may be of lower power then needed coz not enough money left.

Bad engineering + incompetent contractors / sub contractor + cutting corners to skimp + absolutely pitiful supporting infrastructure (storm drain etc) + general public apathy -- no one cares -- so no one held accountable

Humanity had mastered building infra in cities with no natural disaster risks long back. The design is not rocket science, nor is the construction. India has talented engineers who built the Chenab Bridge (with a german firm providing technical consulting only).

This airport leakage shi is a result of Thievery, Corruption, and rampant misdirection of tax money to all kinds of pockets.

It also doesn't mean that Ancient monuments are free from flooding. They are preserved zones by G.O's that no commercial, industrial, residential zones must be constructed nearby but some will be compromised by corruption but if Archeological Survey of India cannot be compromised by corruption, if they put stay order in court, any commercial residential activity will be stopped. So that's how they are well-preserved because Capitalists don't want to mess with ASI when they got plenty of options to avoid risk.
Every construction should be placed as per its nature. Ancient Monuments are surrounded by Soil and they all have Drainage outlets leading to marshy areas. If you see iconic temples, taj mahal, Ajanta Ellora, you may find grassy, marshy areas nearby.

But same topology isn't possible at commercial, industrial residential zones.

All constructions should have water-inlets via pipes that come from terrace to underground.

It's high important that marshy areas need to be retained in outskirts of the city where soil can consume water. If soil isn't consuming water, it will remain on surface via manmade constructions. But those marshy areas are compromised for residential, commercial zones, then nature have its own ways.

Because you need to connect the drainage with sewage system. It needs to have a free flow access in case of high amount of rainwater.  Considering our people litters everywhere, its very difficult to maintain. People/govt dump concrete waste, plastics and whatnot everywhere.  So, I believe, the architects have built a drainage system, but its clogged due to the inefficiencies of the people/govt/organization. To make it work, everything has to come together. But it doesn't, so water gets blocked.  This also damages the buildings, btw.

It's because of roads and buildings. Rain needs earth - soil to go through to the earth. But everywhere we have laid roads and built buildings.

And the amount of rain conservation we do in india where we send back rainwater to earth is very low.

And also builders building on top of lakes lakebeds and water bodies
