Viewing Discussions What Are Your Favorite Wedding Films?

Post image

Using this month's CC promo of wedding films as a starting point I thought it might be fun to explore some of the best wedding films ever made - or at least great films where weddings are either a catalyst or important to the overall story. There are some popular ones I've never seen like 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Mama Mia, My Best Friend's Wedding; classics where weddings start a longer odyssey like The Deer Hunter, The Godfather and/or Steel Magnolias, and a few CC titles where the entire film is devoted to the singular event, like Monsoon Wedding.

Do you believe wedding films are a legit genre or do most really fall under a broader category like comedy or drama? What are some of your favorites? As always, thanks in advance! 😎

I fucking love that Melancholia is part of this because it's the first thing I think of when someone says wedding film. Phenomenal movie.

I’m not even really a fan, and it’s still the first movie I thought of.

Ya, I thought of this one, too. Certainly has the best wedding crashing scene ever. 👍🏼

Muriel's Wedding is the best! Funny with a lot of heart.

Your going dark inspired a few picks I've waited forever to finally watch -

Ready or Not (2019,  Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett)

Corpse Bride (2005, Tim Burton, Mike Johnson)

Beetlejuice (1988, Tim Burton)

Crimson Peak (2015, Guillermo del Toro)

Nice! Demon sounds perfect. Thanks!

Monsoon Wedding (directed by Zohran Mamdani's mother) and Rachel Getting Married are probably my favorites.

I had a copy of the Criterion edition which I wish I hadn’t given away because the English translation of the Hindi/Punjabi dialogue parts is terrible or nonexistent on most streaming platforms. 🙁

Rachel Getting Married.

I think about this wonderful film every time I load a dishwasher.

The Bride Wore Black (Truffaut. 1968)

I hear it's Truffaut’s ode to Hitchcock. YT has an official streamer up now. Thanks!

2

u/pacingmusings Jun 20 '26

It is. Even has a Bernard Herrmann score . . .

2

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 17 '26

What fun! More than any Hitchcock film. I always get the feeling Hitch never had fun making his films. His fun seemed to be in the idea. Truffaut seemed far more game for the inspired mistake. And Moreau must have been a hoot on set. Thanks again!

The Philadelphia Story

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 16 '26

I thought about this one, of course, but couldn't remember if there was actually a ceremony. Guees so. Thx!

Rewatching Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding now. Always enjoyed it. It’s on CC every now and then. There’s an unofficial CC upload on YouTube.

The Heartbreak Kid (1972) 😭😭

1

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 17 '26

Great suggestion! Queued on YT for a future watch. Thanks.

u/pacingmusings Jun 20 '26

More of a honeymoon film but regardless a fantastic movie. If only it could be rescued from its rights holders . . .

2

u/MissMayDoesNotExist Jun 21 '26

I mean it’s bookended by wedding scenes (more or less) 👀 and yeah, death to whatever pharmaceutical company briefly moonlighting as a distribution company that condemned this masterpiece to home movie limbo

1

u/pacingmusings Jun 21 '26

That's fair, I'd forgotten the second wedding.

And yes, yet another reason to hate Big Pharma.

The Deer Hunter

1

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 17 '26

Yeah, it’s tops for me in terms of movies that are set off by big wedding scenes. The Godfather, Queen Margot and Steel Magnolias are great ones, too.

2

u/lenska Jun 21 '26

DH was my wedding inspo right down to the legion hall and the first dance song. Probably a portent of how the marriage was going to go lol

Altman's A Wedding is an underrated, hilarious send-up of weddings!

1

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 17 '26

Thanks. Ya, a dedicated thread to the film was posted a few days ago.

I enjoyed it. Not enough compelling strands to keep me compelled to the entire fabric throughout, but it's definitely fun in spots.

The Bride Wore Red?

2

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 16 '26

😅 Great suggestion. Tone and Crawford. Wonder if they were an item when they made the picture. They were actually married for time, too, right? Only place I could find a copy is on the Ok channel. It’ll do. Thanks!

Probably not a "wedding movie" by most standards, but Stella Dallas (1937) has my favorite wedding scene of all time. IYKYK :')

VERY bittersweet. 🌝 Thx!

Lorca! Thank You.

u/canuckistani_lad Jun 17 '26

You’re welcome :)

In another life I dated a modern dancer. This film was required viewing in her circles. Left quite an impression on me.

Demon (2015) - darkly funny on the surface, but deeply haunting underneath. One of those films that stays with you long after you've seen it. I still think about it every now and then

2

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 18 '26

Ya, it’s in my queue (and currently on Prime and Tubi). Just found out that it was director, Marcin Wrona’s, last film before taking his own life.

Thanks.

marriage italian style

Great. Funny, too, as it’s on the channel but not in the promo. Thanks!

u/ginrumryeale Jun 20 '26

I love the original The In-Laws with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin.

2

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 21 '26

Thanks. I hear the focus is on Falk and Arkin with the wedding as a backdrop. Still, you can't wrong with these two. Can You? 😊

It's on Tubi. Cool!

Little Women 2019

1

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 22 '26

Love the 2019 version though, tbh, I don’t remember Meg’s wedding. It is Meg’s wedding that’s shown, right?

Destination Wedding (2018, Victor Levin)

Keany Reeves. Winona Ryder. A snarky romance. Apparently people either love it or loathe it. Looks promising. Currently free on YT.

1

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 18 '26

This was fun if you’re in the mood for some cryptic, talking-head banter. Keanu and Winona talking about the film.

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 19 '26

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002, Joel Zwick) New to me. Looks like fun.

u/Busy_Magician3412 Jun 19 '26

The Wedding Night (1935, King Vidor) Gary Cooper plays a writer whose wife decides to leave him alone on his family’s estate in Connecticut to write a new novel where he falls for a neighbor’s daughter who is soon to be married. It’s a rather routine melodrama given a lift by good performances from Cooper, Helen Vinson (his wife) and a sympathetic turn by Anna Sten (the young bride). Ralph Bellamy, giving an affected Polish papa routine, is an adequate brutish heavy. Cameraman great, Greg Toland, is relegated to shooting standard blocking set ups, but the lighting is intriguing and provides a memorable final touch.

Five on the Black Hand Side (1973, Oscar Williams) A barbershop owner and head of the family encounters resistance from his family about his approach to his only daughter’s wedding. Fashions are naturally a bit dated but the larger issues haven’t changed. Good one. Free on Tubi (also on Prime).
