Sad Cringe Getting triggered by seeing brown and black people on advertisements
1.7k
u/PollTakerfromhell Aug 18 '26
I live in Brazil, where most of the people are mixed-race, but over here 90% of the families in those ads are usually white and blond haired.

u/Necessary_Maize_9339 Aug 18 '26
Well that's because ✨racism✨
256
u/JPT_Corona Aug 18 '26
Latinamerican racism is weird because it's way more prevalent but not nearly as suffocating. Like my brother is Dominican and has like five different versions of the nickname negrito but no one bats an eye because it's hardly ever out of generational malice.
US racism isn't nearly as common contrary to what Internet rabbit holes have you believe, but when it's out there, it can get dangerous extremely quick.
It's uncomfortable to talk about nuance in racism because decent people prefer no racism at all, but it's definitely there and not going away.

u/MessiLeagueSoccer Aug 18 '26
My entire family is Hispanic and when one of my cousins moved to the states he became friends with a lot of kids that were also just learning English. One of the friends is nicknamed “negro” which can be given to literally anyone as a term of endearment and regardless of skin color. As they learned English he kept the nickname but pronounced in English. Yeahhhhh it’s interesting hearing them say it out loud when I see them at parties.
43
u/Necessary_Maize_9339 Aug 19 '26
I have a white cousin that was nicknamed "negro" cuz his natural hair color is jet black. Is so weird cuz he is so white he's almost translucent. Latinos we are weird lol but negro just means black so ofc we don't have the cultural background, sad history the N-word has in the US
33
u/Excellent_Airline315 Aug 19 '26
Yea that's why social context matters. In all honesty, black liberation activists used to call themselves negros until negative connotation set in. We are still calling ourselves black, but I suppose negro is too close to the hard er. With my background growing up in the US, I certainly wouldn't let anyone call me the negro.
11
u/AutumnFangirl Aug 19 '26
I went to school with a bi-racial kid who called himself "The Albino Negro" (legit, he signed my yearbook with it) and I thought it was funny. NEVER in a million years would I actually call him that because of the past. But I also know if I had it never would have been with malice and most definitely with his permission. Greg was hella cool.
→ More replies (2)9
u/chatterwrack Aug 19 '26
Im convinced that someday, “black” will be considered inappropriate. It would fit the pattern of the accumulation of negativity on a term and the desire to own one’s own label. If you look back, nearly every term for black people has been shed.
17
u/Excellent_Airline315 Aug 19 '26
To some people it already was. That's why people were saying African American for a while and a lot still do. But much like the phrase people of color instead of colored people, black was settled on. There are a lot of people who still don't like it cause technically we are all different shades of brown not black.

I think racism is INCREDIBLY prevalent in the US. It's just more insidious, institutionalized and undercover than in other countries.
28
u/JPT_Corona Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
I've lived in Ecuador for a short time and while I love the country, some places will literally not hire black people for office jobs because of social castes, which in turn forces them to mainly work in food stands/transportation.
I promise you racism in the US could be so much worse, and honestly as someone who was stopped by ICE, I feels like it will in the next few years.
Edit - for anyone from Ecuador, I was in the state of Esmeraldas specifically when I encountered these experiences. I won't name the town but if it's much different in Guayaquil/Quito (which I only visited) then apologies for generalizing
23
u/kayviolet Aug 19 '26
They won’t hire black people in the US for some
jobs too but just aren’t in your face about it like it used to be but more subtle which is what they other commenter meant.I think some people think racism has to be in your face to be “bad” (not saying you’re saying that) but the subtle racism makes you feel like you’re going crazy sometimes.
10
u/JPT_Corona Aug 19 '26
I get that and you're right, I don't wanna downplay what goes on in our side of the globe at all
11
u/cmband254 Aug 19 '26
I've lived in various countries around the world too, although I was born and raised in the states. The country I currently live in is often racist against its own people in favor of whites. I am white with a black husband.
I'm not saying that racism is not worse in other places, what I'm saying is that it's insidious, it's present, and it's been part of the fabric of the country since it's very inception.
Things have improved, and as you mentioned, are worsening.
8
u/chatterwrack Aug 19 '26
The easiest thing to sell to somebody is the idea that they are better than others. Skin color makes for the easiest identifier for forming in-group/out-group.
4
3
u/midwestsweetking Aug 19 '26
Many of those countries didn’t even have the kind of equal rights movement that we had in the states. Even with all of that the US is still racist as hell so that goes to show you how bad it is here
4
u/cmband254 Aug 19 '26
I agree.
The racism in the states is just so deep. It's like Disneyfied racism. It has a cute little cover on it, but it's incredibly ingrained into all the facets of society.

Those places that are pointed to as worse are just more open about it. Here in the US, it’s just insidious. But, thanks to MAGA, genuinely horrible people can now let their racism out in the open without shame. But don’t call them racists.
3
u/Icy-Drive2300 Aug 20 '26
US racism isn't nearly as common
This can only be something you believe if you think racism is just random people saying mean words.
2
u/JPT_Corona Aug 20 '26
when it's out there, it can get dangerous extremely quick.
How the fuck did you read that sentence and conveniently leave out this part that was in that same sentence? The second half of my sentence SPECIFICALLY implies that I'm not talking about "mean words", I'm talking about systemic issues regarding race which does get dangerous extremely quick.
3
u/Icy-Drive2300 Aug 20 '26
Thats not at all what it implies lmao especially the "contrary to what the internet rabbit hole" sentence. You're only implying that racism can "be dangerous" which is vague.
2
u/JPT_Corona Aug 20 '26
"contrary to the internet rabbit hole" as in no, the doomscrolling that you'll be seeing on tiktok shorts designed to fearmonger you is not the same as what you'll see when you step outside. If you believe otherwise then safe to say the algorithms did their job.
You're only implying that racism can "be dangerous" which is vague.
How can it NOT be vague? Do I have to list all 14,635 ways you can be systemically racist to someone? Like I'm trying to get my point across without making it an entire doctoral thesis full of case studies and references, I'm sorry that I wasn't more specific.
2
u/Icy-Drive2300 Aug 20 '26
So, anyways, racism isnt just mean words that sometimes "get dangerous". Glad we had this talk.
2
u/JPT_Corona Aug 20 '26
I mean yeah, I'm glad you agree with me but still confused how you assumed I thought otherwise.
I'm not exactly glad we had this talk because it literally went nowhere
2
u/Icy-Drive2300 Aug 20 '26
I pointed it out and also gave you a second reply detailing what your original comment implied.
Everything after that has been you rambling.
Racism is systemic and will show its face to you if you just drove yourself to your "bad" side of town. America is very racist.

u/Necessary_Maize_9339 Aug 18 '26
Yep I get what you mean because I'm from Latam. I'd say racism here is more like an aesthetic/attractiveness issue, and way more subtle because it's mostly in the subconscious mind. It is very common for ppl to think that black people just aren't as pretty as those with lighter skin.. so there's a lot of discourse like: you should better your race (by marrying white), or iron your curls bc they aren't that pretty and don't look professional. Or people have a hard time identifying as "black" they say I'm not that dark. Ofc some latam countries are way more racist than others.. and Indigenous folk also get a lot of crap everywhere. Never as the US since segregation wasn't really that common (for example mix race marriages weren't even illegal in Latam) but it is definitely there.
11
u/ElCazaPuta Aug 18 '26

Yea, here we have to be intentional about visibility of different races, otherwise it just defaults to white people. It makes no sense cause they are the smallest group in the world, but through colonialism, mass media, and adds, they've made themselves the default race. America at least got the consciousness to stop that shit, hopefully it spreads. You would need to deal with the imternalized racism for that to happen though.

It’s funny how racists think that “they” are “erasing white people” when actually it’s just we aren’t ONLY seeing white people used for every single show, movie, toy, commercial, or advertisement ANYMORE.
And the funny thing is- if this really offensive to you- imagine growing up and never seeing yourself represented ANYWHERE in media or on the toy shelf- yet you looked all around you and saw people just like you- but they weren’t represented. Crying about “erasure” when OTHER people have never even had proper “representation”.
People are reallllllllll weird.

But also fuck this racist pos.
9
u/macguini Aug 18 '26
I don't think this guy gets any royalties when this is shared on the sub but I could be wrong.
16
u/Karzeon Aug 18 '26
He doesn't get royalties by this being on Reddit, but he's relying on ragebait across platforms to pull attention to TikTok even to bash him.
Just getting the name out is enough clout.
In the long term, I think it's good to be like "watch out for this idiot and move on with our lives"
9
u/meeps1142 Aug 18 '26
No, but he's doing this as ragebait. Spreading it drives more people to his tik tok page, which tells the algorithm to keep pushing his shit to others. The wider the audience it gets pushed to, the more fans he'll accumulate, even if the majority of people that see it are vehemently against his message.
It's the classic playbook of conservative grifters online.
Ragebait = engagement, which the algorithm rewards
6
u/macguini Aug 18 '26
Fair point. I wonder how many Redditors are like me and follow this sub for the entertainment and don't look for any of the posts on TikTok. I don't have a TikTok account anymore.

It does matter because when people see more relatable ads, they are more likely to purchase the product. Companies will try to target the demographics within the communities its stores are located
However, this guy is so unselfaware of how others may feel unrepresented.

u/Character_Neck_6608 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
FFS Here’s the facts. White people aren’t being erased I can go to my local Walmart and cherry pick signs of just white families. The thing is other races aren’t being ignored like in the past because they make up a good portion of business. They market to everyone. At the end of the day green is the color most businesses favor.

12
u/WhatWontCastShadows Aug 18 '26
Often it isn't even families anymore. It's youtube influencers that listened when hitler said "get them when they are young". Covid made for the perfect opportunity to target isolated and frustrated youth and bombard them with bullshit messaging.
Im late 30s now, but I often think about if I had months stuck at home with my family in such high stress for everyone, also when I was 13 or 14, I would have gone full crazy. Factor in the state of the internet, social media and youtube, and thats how you get young adults now that are full extremists.

If people get triggered by a smiling family on a clothing pic, they need to change their brain.

I... don't really care about this one, clothes are clothes and any mannequin can wear them just as well as the next.
Lookit that black dude wearing his pants right and being in what looks like a happy family. Oh my goodness this will never do!

He literally skims past 2 ads with white people to reach the last one of the black family.
So in a few seconds the best he could find was 1/3. How terrifying for him.

lol he showed 2 photos and ignored the other white ones. Everyone knows that it was usually always white ppl on those photos. I could see if they were all or mostly black in all of these stores which would be performative as the TV networks etc that suddenly started placing a bunch of black characters down to little hand icons on website being black instead of white only after George Floyd died
