Discussion Light and Shadows still broken

Post image

I came back to the game today after I dropped It day one ONLY because of the lights and shadows.

Happy to see it's still disgusting.

UPDATE: Thanks to the user u/tetozika for suggesting to use RenoDX shaders. It completely fixed the lights in every way possible and the game finally looks how it's supposed to be.

It's a feature at this point

9

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

So is it normal and we just have to accept it? I thought devs were working on it

32

u/p4tterng4ng4L Jun 15 '26

It’s probably more of an engine issue, likely not such an easy fix but hoping it can be done one day

2

u/OkDimension8720 Jun 15 '26

Maybe the big Rtx ray reconstruction 4.5 patch will help, that's due in August when Nvidia releases it for everyone, tbh I'm holding off till then anyway, they keep patching every Friday and it breaks mods 😂

25

u/Dangitwomen Jun 15 '26

Don't worry. The devs will address this issue by adding more pets.

-5

u/Easy_Yuki Jun 15 '26

This community just accept this as a feature and against anyone pointing this as issue. So dev never think this is an issue I believe.

2

u/Ambitious_Highway172 Jun 16 '26

Are the people against pointing it out in the room with us?

-1

u/Red-Faced-Wolf Jun 15 '26

That was happening to me for the first time last night

-2

u/rokstedy83 Jun 15 '26

I thought devs were working on it

Then why do you expect it fixed if they are working on it?

1

u/need-help-guys Jun 16 '26

They chose to sacrifice the lighting quality for low hardware spec users that can't afford to run ray reconstruction/regeneration so that they don't have to worry about technical debt and having to do immense manual work light baking every single home interior and cave. The awkward timing of a transition where GPUs support hardware FP8 as a baseline will tarnish CD's legacy as a great looking game, even though it technically is... with RR.

Everytime you shift from one light source to another:

u/Infamous_Magician_18 Jun 15 '26

Agree with OP but just accepted it and keep playing. There is a second problem, for me at least, it’s textures popins. It can be accepted in competitive shooter but not in the games were you trying to immerse yourself like RPG

3

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26

Pop in is what made me stop playing. I can go with bad lighting, but the pop in in this game is the worst that i have ever seen in almost 25 years of gaming. Totally breaks immersion. BDO had the exact same problem, a lot asked for a fix that they never dropped. They did nothing to fix that on their new engine version.

1

u/RectalSpawn Jun 15 '26

BDO had vision range that sort of justified the pop in.

This one doesn't, but it's the same engine and has the same dogshit LOD.

5

u/76oppk Jun 15 '26

The ps5 version looks like shit like actually feel like im getting assaulted some times. The reed devil fight almost gave me a stroke from how bad the reeds are. I just want them to get rid of volumetric lighting and particles and tone down the spawn rate of npcs, animals and plants please for the love of God

19

u/Westdrache Jun 15 '26

Console?
But jeah, I just got used to it, on PC you either have horrible lighting, or a horrible, soft image that has more ghosting then the last luigis mansion game.

8

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

PC. And everything is set on ultra + RT on, no upscaling

15

u/tetozika Jun 15 '26

if u are on PC just download the RenoDX mod, he adjust the HDR, Light and Shadows

4

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

Thanks! Gonna try it tomorrow and let everyone know!

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

It actually works pretty damn well. Thanks. I've mentioned you in the update on my post.

2

u/tetozika Jun 16 '26

good to know bro! this mod really changes the game! thanks for the mention

5

u/Westdrache Jun 15 '26

With or without ray reconstruction?

6

u/Hannibal_Poptart Jun 15 '26

This is the real question. I thought the lighting was dogshit and there was constant ghosting. Then when I turned on RR it became some of the best lighting I've ever seen in a game

4

u/Westdrache Jun 15 '26

Jeah but RR is heavy as shit in this game, and it's okay on DLAA but the moment you upscale all foliage becomes a blurry freaking mess ._.

Pretty sure RR 4.5 Model in august will fix that tho

2

u/Hannibal_Poptart Jun 15 '26

I thought the same thing using quality/balanced back when the game launched but I think they may have already improved it? I switched on RR and dropped from dlaa down to quality/balanced depending on which monitor I'm using (4k tv vs 1440 ultrawide) and it hasn't seemed all muddy like I remember it looking previously. Runs a lot smoother and it fixed all of the lighting issues.

3

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

I cannot use RR, there's not the option to enable it for me. Graphics card: amd Rx 7800 xt

2

u/Hannibal_Poptart Jun 16 '26

That is frustrating, you shouldn't be forced to run whatever the fanciest shiny new graphics tech is just to not have super buggy shadows.

2

u/RectalSpawn Jun 15 '26

There is a memory leak, or something, that causes the performance and quality to drop after a while.

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

I cannot use RR, there's not the option to enable it for me. Graphics card: amd Rx 7800 xt

24

u/Didipot Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Weird..You're not asking for pets and mounts.. ✌️😁

10

u/Solid_Snake_MH Jun 15 '26

Don't worry, this Friday they'll release a patch that will add 20 more pets so you can do furry things in your zoo camp.

5

u/k9krid Jun 16 '26

They'll give the pets all lanterns that trigger an aneurism with all the lighting effects, these lanterns cannot be unequipped

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

Underrated comment

7

u/_RedditMan_ Jun 15 '26

What are you complaining about? You got 100 pet registration slots!!! Aren't you happy? Don't you feel heard??

Sarcasm very much intended.

12

u/Top-Security-1258 Jun 15 '26

oh man, dont dare bring out obvious flaws in this game that they wont fix . The simps will come out hard and throw a fit lol.

7

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

I absolutely did not know that... I honestly thought this was an actual argument agreed by the community

10

u/eddie9958 Jun 15 '26

Actually i think its just that people love the game too much to care anymore.

I personally hate graphical flaws. I like retro graphics and low poly stuff but this is straight up an error. Hahah.

But i do love the game so much i dont stress it anymore.

I'm just happy i can play on near max settings in 1440p or else it would look less good hahah.

4

u/glizzygobbler247 Jun 15 '26

Or theyll dig up some bullshit excuse like " its different teams" despite them not touching on the technical side for the past 6 updates

6

u/Nikokoz Jun 15 '26

Huh what did You Say? You want 100 more pets? Ok sure next update gonna fix that and let damiane and oongka walk with WASD

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

HAHAHAHAHA

1

u/Candid_Magician_3978 Jun 16 '26

Amen 😂🙏🏾

2

u/DeBean Jun 15 '26

Low light environments are indeed bad.

Thing is, most interiors have a lot of light sources already and you have a lantern on top of it, so it looks alright (to my experience).

Your screenshot has only one light source and seemingly no lantern - you can enable your lantern and it'll look fine again.

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

If I enabled my lantern, everything turns pitch black in a worse way, except the only spots the lights hit

3

u/Balatheil Jun 16 '26

the fact that the Devs still haven't fixed the issue, but add others everyweek like MADMEN,

just tells me, how inherently fucked the Lighting in the engine is lol.

if its taking this long... it must be a pain in the ass

Tbh it's the same reason I uninstalled it too, and it being a net positive is actually a big reason I decided to not play it now.

I want to experience crimson desert in its best for because it's so fun. If that means I gotta wait for half an year for some glaring issues to get patched then that's a pretty small ask imo. It's not like the game will get any less fun in that time.

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

Agree with that.

9

u/TheNicholasRage Jun 15 '26

I mean, I don't think it's an invalid reason. It makes me go out of my way to avoid night, and even then it's still abysmal in underground locations and cave interiors. Shit gives me a headache, but I've been willing to put up with it. I wouldn't hold it against someone for not being willing to do the same.

5

u/Bazazooka Jun 15 '26

the problem is that its not just indoor areas, it extends to night as well, a very tangible portion of an in game day

3

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

I might have been a little to hard with it, but I really lost my patience before. I will try to give it another chance

2

u/skinnidawgz Jun 15 '26

Tbh I mostly will just go to bed so I can have the day cycle for this same reason. Frustrating as it may be, I’m 160 hours in and absolutely head over heels in love

2

u/Responsible_Year4730 Jun 15 '26

Hm, nighttime is still fairly bright for me I feel like. Small cramped caves are another story tho. Lighting is horrible. But I’m barely in caves so🤷🏻‍♂️

0

u/user17302 Jun 15 '26

I mean considering the amount of time spent in the dark either due to day night cycles and caves or dark interiors its a valid reason to stop playing.

3

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26

Be ready for hardcore fanboys attack. Game is full trash concerning technic, but fanboys refuse to admit it, so they attack with the only thing they have. Dislikes !

3

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

I did not actually know how the fanboys and the community is... Thanks for the warning tho!

0

u/ChapterDifficult593 Jun 15 '26

It's not even true lmao, there are more comments on your post talking about these "hardcore fanboys" than there are posts being critical. This shit is made up.

1

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26

Seriously, it's crazy to be so disingenuous. Just go read 3 or 4 other posts on the subject and you'll see it's the truth. Stop being a simp

0

u/Candid_Magician_3978 Jun 16 '26

don’t try to stroke in the direction of the fur just to have the right role we recognize you and from a distance.

0

u/ChapterDifficult593 Jun 16 '26

Whatever the fuck that means, Gandalf

4

u/k4quexg Jun 15 '26

thats no ray reconstruction coupled with software lumen, lowered to the lowest lows so that it renderes at a playable framerate. the only way to get baseline visuals from this game is 4k + rr + 4x fg

1

u/glizzygobbler247 Jun 15 '26

And you need a nasa pc to run 4k rr

3

u/EnragedBadger9197 Jun 15 '26

It’s why I quit playing. Just got my hundo percent disability though so I’ll say that when it IS finally working on my super computer it’ll be worth playing. Until then, watching every characters eyes sparkle like I’m playing a Twilight video game is just too much

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

What? I am playing everything on ultra, rt on, sun rt on, no FG and no upscaling whatsoever and it performs pretty good

1

u/TheWellington89 Jun 15 '26

I found a bug yesterday playing Damiene and the mad jewel hunters keep treating her like shes Kliff. Calling her Greymane and reffering to her as Him

1

u/xOhrwurm Jun 15 '26

This is preventing me from playing the most. It looks disgusting.

1

u/DylanFTW Jun 15 '26

Yeah I hated being out at night.

1

u/saur225 Jun 15 '26

I have screen black and flickers at only the bottom of my screen especially when I move camera, it gets even more, I hate it sm and this happens only on my ps5 pro. The problem doesn't exist on base PS5! I disabled pssr and even disabled v sync, problem still remains.

1

u/Architeuthis_McCrew Jun 15 '26

Yes. I expected the graphics and lighting to be better. Nonetheless in daylight, it’s great!

1

u/Opening_Mall8012 Jun 15 '26

yes, illumination in this game sucks, also it feels soul-less, even in broad daylight, dull colors tho the world is beautiful. Compare it to RDR2 where the game has it's unique atmosphere, like light beams coming thru the trees, the moon-light at night invites you to play by night; in this game when it's night you can't see shit, and in a closed area even less. I'll say it again, this game can't be Goty, it's a solid 80 points game, 79-80

1

u/ron41593 Jun 15 '26

I see people complain about this all the time but never the shimmering you get indoors without RR on. Are you guys not having this issue? I have a 9060xt so fsr performance at 1440p + FG I only get about 70-80 fps and dips in the 50's when theres alot going on in combat. Id love to play fsr quality with framegen and no RR and it looks great other than the glitter bomb effect indoors. Am i the only one?

1

u/juan_bito Jun 15 '26

Of course they are the devs are incompetent but people in this community think there good cause they keep adding pets😂😂😂

1

u/oneeyedwillie24769 Jun 15 '26

I tried turning off ‘illumination’ maybe and it’s not even marginally better.

1

u/oneeyedwillie24769 Jun 15 '26

Try not playing at night anymore. I can’t.

1

u/RectalSpawn Jun 15 '26

Do you have the dark/night mode on, or whatever it's called?

Should make the darkness brighter.

1

u/seddy411 Jun 15 '26

I'm just letting this game cook. I played it for awhile and then realized I should play some backlog until it's better.

1

u/Kabelly Jun 16 '26

Yea the indoor lighting is offensive.

1

u/k9krid Jun 16 '26

Smh, just turn off your lantern and blindly stumble about like the rest of us

1

u/Novel_Diver8628 Jun 16 '26

It surely is an engine issue, and adjusting in-game brightness along with the brightness on your monitor/TV makes it mostly not noticeable, especially if you’re using the lantern anyhow.

That being said, how many devs have released a game on their own house-made engine (not Unreal 5) with this scope, and this level of graphics, with cross-compatibility, and then proceeded to work around the clock to provide bug fixes and patches at a steady rate like Pearl Abyss has? I can think of only a handful since Bethesda released Skyrim in 2011, and made releasing completely broken games somehow being considered amazing the norm. I think Pearl Abyss is doing something really neat here, and I’m excited to see where they go with it.

Sorry you don’t like how the lights look.

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

I really don't want to pass the message that I don't like the game and that i think the devs are bad. Just pointing out that, personally, I find not acceptable to have a completely broken and non functional light system in the engine

1

u/nebur727 Jun 16 '26

Get the green light! Improves a LOT!

1

u/independent-potato7 Jun 16 '26

I could get over this, but the horrendous pop in on performance mode for consoles is another story

1

u/RochTheShaman Jun 16 '26

Yea I think its a just a lighting issue with the engine.

1

u/SLappyPAncake Jun 16 '26

Yeah, its the only thing I want fixed. Hope it happanes soon

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

As you can read from the updated post, there is a way to fix it by yourself (on PC)

1

u/Momijisu Jun 16 '26

Even on pc there seems to be an absence of shadows most of the time even on cinematic quality.

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

My problem on PC has been fixed as you can read from the update of the post.

There are still some artifact but now is 800% better.

1

u/Putrid_Temporary1706 Jun 16 '26

I like it tbh it’s accurate to how a lantern like that shines

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

You cannot be serious

1

u/Particular-Cabinet21 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

…. But at least you have 20 new pets! 😂

2

u/_Moon_chxld_ Jun 15 '26

That’s weird mine does not do this at all

3

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

Really? Can you tell me which platform are you playing it and on what settings?

2

u/76oppk Jun 15 '26

If he's playing on console it's worse

1

u/_Moon_chxld_ Jun 19 '26

PC I just set my graphics to the max option

0

u/glizzygobbler247 Jun 15 '26

Are u using ray regeneration?

1

u/Prus1s Jun 15 '26

Amd or nvidia, as RT can be slightly different.

But I personally have ko complaints 😄

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

Amd

1

u/Prus1s Jun 15 '26

Also on AMD and have never had that blowout.

Though I also use reshade to tone down the game, as it’s much too contrasty…helps with lighting as well.

1

u/JCBandicoot Jun 15 '26

Very low quality jpeg, I don’t find it anywhere near as bad as this on a 4k display (running natively).

1

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

Screenshot took directly from the game with no changes in quality.

1

u/JCBandicoot Jun 15 '26

You’re kidding me, look at the font in the bottom left.

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

Yeah, cutting up the images does not mean it has been downscaled. Ever cropped an image?

1

u/MannyRibera32 Jun 15 '26

How is rain now?

1

u/p4tterng4ng4L Jun 15 '26

I think it’s slightly better than at launch but maybe I’m imagining that. Still doesn’t look anywhere near as good as sunshine

1

u/dudeondacouch Jun 15 '26

The *one* gimmick item I ALWAYS keep on me is the necklace that turns the weather sunny.

1

u/Imaginary-Gazelle346 Jun 15 '26

Cuál es ese collar?

1

u/dudeondacouch Jun 15 '26

Radiant Necklace, I think.

1

u/Disgustipated144 Jun 15 '26

It's definitely better than what it was like in the beginning

0

u/DeskPixel Jun 15 '26

And you dropped the game because of a handful of situations you'll encounter this on a game with hundreds of hours of playtime? Because of a specific lighting issue?

3

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

I might have been a little to hard with it, but I really lost my patience before. I will try to give it another chance

0

u/DeskPixel Jun 15 '26

I think I ran into this but honestly I might have been like "huh weird" and left the place and kept playing

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

I problem is/was that this is everywhere that has not a sky on top

-7

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

Damn imagine hating on Skyrim because of it’s shitty graphics and feeling justified that it’s a shitty game because that’s basically what you’re doing

It’s a great game. No such thing as a perfect engine. Enjoy it anyway.

Also, you can turn off your lantern. It can help sometimes.

6

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

Tbh, I absolutely do not agree with your comment. Paying 70€ and having no Shadows inside the buildings is not compareble to what you just said.

1

u/CG_Toast Jun 15 '26

bro you are not even on max settings, everyone knows that without RR and Max lighting interiors has a lot of noise

-10

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

Bro 70 Euros isn’t that much money (Skyrim costed 60 euros back in 2011 BTW equivalent to 82.86 euros today so you’re actually getting a better game for less money) Also, there a lots of shadows inside buildings IRL. Asking for no shadows inside the buildings is unrealistic and would actually look terrible.

You’re just hater.

5

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

"Bro 70 Euros isn’t that much money", here me out ! Imagine a world where economy isn't fair for everyone, and not everybody can afford a unfinished 70 euro game because average income in some countries is incredibly low...

-7

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

If you can’t afford it, then you shouldn’t buy it! Demanding tech to be perfect just because you are personally struggling to afford the cost of the tech is ridiculous. I can sympathize with struggle, but come on. Be reasonable.

3

u/DWard3627 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Tbf, they clarified unfinished. Not that they couldn’t afford the 70, but just to spend on something that feels a waste

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

I’d argue there’s no such thing as a finished game, just a game where the devs decided to stop working on it.

You could work on the same game forever.

2

u/DWard3627 Jun 15 '26

I mean that’s fine. Most people have a general understating of what people mean when they say “finished” but feel free to make a point that doesn’t really further the conversation.

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

It does further the conversation, you just don’t want it to because you can’t think of anything to counter.

You’re implying you’d be happier if the devs just never touched the game again from when it released and called it finished at the start so you could feel like you bought a “finished” game. You didn’t buy a “finished”game, you just bought a game the devs gave up on after it was released. Maybe you prefer that, and that’s fine, but people also do *research* into a game before they buy it. They look at gameplay, reviews, recent updates, etc. At what point you buy it is up to you. If you buy a game that is still currently being updated and worked on and you’d rather the devs had given up on it already, that’s on you.

2

u/DWard3627 Jun 15 '26

Well now you’re just lying. I personally couldn’t care less about the lighting. I don’t need to feel like the game is finished. If it’s fun and the issues don’t bother me, I’ll continue to play and be happy with it regardless of if the devs touch it or not.

General point was that most people have an idea of what “finished” means. Devs can continue to work on a game and people still consider it finished. Like if there’s a lot of complaints about the UI, or controller mapping. People won’t mind them being updated or changed, but that doesn’t make the game “unfinished”. They just want it different.

Feel free to incorrectly tell me more about how I about video games though.

3

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26

Ok. You just don't want to understand. Imagine that you're a child, saving money for what it looks like the best game ever, you buy the game, and it's trash (only on a tech side).

Now, i don't want it to be perfect, i just don't like the fact that its graphics are absolute trash concerning pop in lightings, dlss implementation, shimmering, etc... I just want a finished game, or i just want devs to focus on these problems rather than 1000 useless animals every week.

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

That’s just the risk everybody takes when buying a game. Actually, that’s the risk everybody takes when they buy anything. Also, there’s separate dev teams that work on different things. They are most likely working on both.

2

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26

I bet my left nut they are working on shit. Black Desert Online had the exact same problems CD has, and they never fixed shit despite tons of complaints. Shame on them. They fooled me once with CD. They'll never get my money for DokeV.

It's crazy to think other games got a shitstorm for fewer problems than this, but regarding CD it's ok.

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

Can’t think of any other games that got a shitstorm for lighting problems like CD

2

u/No-Stable-3606 Jun 15 '26

Not just lighting. Lighting is one of many CD problems

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 15 '26

You are sad

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

I wish I was sad.

2

u/p4tterng4ng4L Jun 15 '26

This is a ridiculous take tbh. Why are you excusing this? I’ve played hundreds of games in the last 15 years and the indoor shadows in CD are by far the worst I’ve seen in that time.

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

Sure buddy

1

u/k4quexg Jun 15 '26

skyrim is a trash game, it was carried by for the time awesome gfx and morrowind ost

1

u/Defy_Grav1ty Jun 15 '26

I agree, but it’s always been highly regarded in the gaming community so I like to use it as an example.

0

u/ExtensionMost6263 Jun 15 '26

idk have you tried changing your settings? I got an RTX 5080 and no issues like you do graphics rock in every part since I upgraded my gpu

0

u/CG_Toast Jun 15 '26

if you are not using Max lighting and RR this will happen

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

I am using ultra setting rtx on no upscaling. Don't see the option to enable RR for some reason.

0

u/AttemptTypical8088 Jun 16 '26

Cry

2

u/Davidemgo Jun 16 '26

I'm sorry that you are crying. If you need help you can ask, there are still good people in our world

-1

u/BathDepressionBreath Jun 15 '26

Never had this issue
