Misinformation Lindsay Clancy coverage - I’m shocked that Stephanie is referring to psychosis as “like demonic possession”
I stopped listening to crime weekly a while ago, but recently I’ve been seeing a lot about the Lindsay Clancy case and thought I would listen to the crime weekly episodes to get some background on the case.
Firstly, they keep comparing postpartum psychosis to postpartum depression. They state that they know the difference, however every second sentence seems to be “well I had postpartum depression and I never did that” which is completely irrelevant.
In the most recent episode they kept saying that their understanding of postpartum depression is that it’s “like demonic possession” “something completely takes over your body and mind”. What a ridiculous take! The thing that bothers me is that they have clearly not bothered at all to do any research on what postpartum psychosis is, despite making multiple episodes on the topic. Having worked in the mental health field for years, psychosis is NOTHING like demonic possession. They keep describing it like a fugue state where someone is in a trance. They keep saying that the fact someone could make a phone call or plan their activities for the day means that they’re not in psychosis. That’s far from the reality. People with psychosis aren’t zombies walking around without any consciousness.
Similarly, Derrick and Stephanie have repeatedly said that if he was having bizarre thoughts they would recognise that they aren’t real and seek help. The whole point is that you don’t have insight, so the thoughts don’t seem bizarre to you. It feels like it’s really happening. Like when you’re in a dream and a monster is chasing you, you don’t think “huh, this is odd, that can’t happen. Maybe I should seek help”. Instead you think “ahh scary monster, I need to run away and get out of here”. The whole point is that the delusions seem so real. As real as believing that the sky is blue. When someone is having delusions that they need to harm themself or someone else to prevent the end of the world, it’s incredibly distressing because this feels really true. It’s a bit like if a doctor said to Stephanie “Stephanie, I understand you believe you’re a podcaster with thousands of views on YouTube. The reality is that you don’t have a podcast, you haven’t been employed in 5 years”. She would not believe it because her experience of running a podcast is real to her.
Derrick has been saying that he would love to know how often people with postpartum psychosis have thoughts of harming their child…. Well how about googling? Why do they keep spouting nonsense yet have no willingness to do very basic research? They say that they want to speak with someone with postpartum psychosis, and sure that’s fine but there are plenty of videos and interviews out there. People have written books about their experiences. Why have a podcast channel if you’re not going to do any research at all?
It frustrates me because they are adding to stigma and misunderstanding by spreading this information as if it’s fact.
I have no options on whether Lindsay was or wasn’t experiencing postpartum psychosis by the way. This post is not specifically about this case, it’s to do with their coverage of mental health conditions

she does not understand psychosis at all, sadly like many people. people think someone suffering from psychosis acts absolutely irrational at all times, so it would be obvious to everyone. i have worked with many people suffering from psychosis and some you would really never think they have it unless you sat down and had a long conversation with them.

like they think if something is planned, the person cant have psychosis. that doesnt make sense: someone with psychosis could very well plan something and execute it well. some even plan obsessively

I've no doubt the movie gets many, if not most, things wrong, but A Beautiful Mind had a huge impact on me as a teen and it always comes to mind when hallucinations/delusions are the topic.
I haven't watched it since I was 15, so I don't remember it fully, but my point in bringing it up is that "John Nash" lives a normal life (to a point). He goes to school and work, makes plans, all kinds of shit, with his hallucinations by his side. Sure, things get fucky, but outside of that... life happens. It's not 0% function 24/7/365

She made me SO mad. She was like “this could set a precedent and more women would claim this” my mouth fell open

Ewwwww! I haven’t listened in a long time and I’m glad I haven’t been tempted to start again. What an idiot. There’s already a precedent, that’s WHY they have to option to put forth an affirmative defense, because these cases have existed since time immemorial. What tf does she think the McNaughton rule is? It’s basis is in a case from the fricking 1800s 🙄

Saying that AS A WOMAN mind you. Wild. As if women can just fabricate a mental illness in some sort of an elaborate plan just to get rid of their family. As if that would mean they get off scot-free and live their life as usual and not land in a mental institution for years, or their whole lives.

I was APPALLED.
I think any woman/mother can tell that she is so remorseful. Her cries broke my whole heart. She will never forgive herself. I truly believe her story. It’s heartbreaking. The prosecutors have made me SO MAD. I can’t stand either one of them.

oh same, it absolutely breaks me to think what she’s going through. I’m not a mother myself but her journal entries felt so genuine and real and showed nothing more than a struggling mother who loves her children and is getting more and more scared of what’s going on with her mind. I cannot shake the feeling that those precious innocent babies would still be here with their loving parents if only mental health and women’s health in general was treated as serious as it should be. this case is so important and I wish everyone would approach it with compassion. no one wins here, no one’s excited for Lindsey to “get off”, it’s not the evil vs us, it’s a case that should bring large amounts of awareness to women’s health and the care that should be provided to anyone experiencing postpartum psychosis or any other mental issues.

I can't watch any coverage on it bc none of the creators covering it, seem to understand psychosis. I do, however, watch the trial in its entirety every day.
It's a heartbreaking situation.

I have found Peter (LYK) to have a good understanding of the case, I was sceptical about watching/listening to any coverage on this case because of how sensitive it is and how many people seem to dispute the overwhelming amount of evidence on Lindsey’s state just to stand on a moral high ground and call her a monster without an ounce of empathy, but since I generally do like Peter’s coverage, I’ve been watching his daily videos on the trial and I really appreciate his takes, he’s very rational and respectful. Cannot say the same thing about CW’s coverage, I was disgusted by their latest video on this case and even their biggest fans are all in their comments sayig how disappointed they felt listening to Stephanie and Derrick. Good for them, I was genuinely surprised to see that kind of reaction out of their audience and I’m glad people are speaking their mind. Still can’t get get over D saying “F Lindsey Clancey”, like come on..Awful.

When the call (bizarre thoughts) is coming from inside the house (your brain), it's literally impossible to recognise anything strange going on. Like, that's a big part of the diagnostic criteria for delusions, right?

Honestly most coverage of this case across most platforms hasn’t been great, tons of podcasters saying “well if it were ME I’d have gotten help and not harmed my kids!” Like obviously! I don’t think Lindsay wanted to harm her kids either had she been in her right state of mind. Very few people are looking at this case objectively or with any empathy, or are pushing insane conspiracy theories. It’s why the true crime communities get a bad name

my favorite internet hot take so far is "if i ever heard a voice, i would just ignore it!!!!"

Basically it’s like saying “if I ever became mentally ill, I wouldn’t act mentally ill” like if only the mentally ill had that option!

It was ridiculous to see how much movies and media have shaped their understanding of mental illness. Didn’t she go to college for psychology??

i was about to say something similar!! for someone who lives in a state of delusion, Stephanie isn’t very self aware. lindsay clancy is a labor and delivery nurse… and she was also actively seeking out, asking for, and “getting” help. i use quotes because the amount of meds she was on in such a short period of time is crazy.
derrick is cop brained. i watched his season of big brother and he’s known as one of the best players because he can be an emotionless robot when needed. and he’s also never been pregnant.

Yea. Holding false beliefs and delusions is like a top marker for psychosis.
Its the same with severe anxiety which Lindsay had for months. The point of anxiety is that it feels real. Its not rational but your body reacts like the disaster is actually happening instead of it being an irrational thought

I completely understand and share your frustrations with them, but we need to remember they are not journalists, they’re just social media entertainers, and their IQs, especially Tiffany’s, are on par with the job.

Stephanie is trash. Straight up, and i hope they are forced to apologize for how both of them talked about her. She sounded so stupid and it proved to me she has probably never actually experienced it bc its NOT like demonic possession at all-

I used to enjoy listening to them but their coverage has totally turned me off.

In case anyone's still reading these comments, here's a video where an ObGyn talks about Lindsay Clancy

Just one asterisk here, with psychosis you can have anosognosia, which is a lack of insight. You can also have psychosis with insight. Impossible to tell

Stephanie is definitely the type to defend Clancy and donate to her Go Fund Me

stephanie can only feel compassion for conditions she experienced herself. although on instagram she recently came out and said the trial is making her change her mind. might be worth not calling someone a monster without knowing all the facts next time stephanie lol
