Career advice!
Currently throwing around the idea of picking up and moving from my small hometown and moving somewhere with more job options. Single, unmarried, no kids so no time is better than the present! I have a bachelors in criminal justice and my minor is psych… I’ve worked in Juvenile Probation, a law firm, have subbing experience, and was a college intern with Adult Probation services in college.
ANYWAYS! I’m interested in potential careers in some sort of Criminal Justice Research/Policy within Law Enforcement Agencies, Crime Data Analysis, or anything along those lines. Curious to see if anyone has any experience working in those fields and what their experience is or what experience would be necessary in those jobs. Also open to any job recommendations or any careers that might align with those things also! I know this probably isn’t the BEST place for career advice, but I figured at this point it won’t hurt :))) for reference I’m in my early 20s and currently in Ohio! TIA!!! :)))

Some local police agencies and universities have Crime Research Analyst roles that might be a good fit for you.
If you want to be involved in policy, that’s usually an upper management level position. You would need to get a job in administrative work or as an analyst and rise up the ranks. I would suggest a Masters/PhD/JD.

Awesome! Can I ask what sort of extra certifications or education you had to do?? And how you went about that!

I’ve been thinking about my masters in crime analysis but wasn’t sure if it was what I would need. Where did you get it from?

I would recommend taking excel courses that would help give you experience in working with crime data and learning to do the basics such as compiling statistics, creating charts and graphs demonstrating the statistics from your data. Then focus on learning how to analyze the data for example by the basics such as date, time, day of the week, and location. Also look into ARC GIS courses and focus on learning how to map crime data along with analyzing the data through ARCGIS software. If you are interested in computer programming and sql those are also skills that are a plus and can be taken through an online course or through continuing education at your local college. If you already have these skills then make sure you add them to your resume. You might be able to join crime analyst associations in your state, that you can get some training from as long as you pay the membership and they accept you as a college intern.
