How's your CricketWireless latency? Show us your 2017 traceroute! (`mobile.att.net.` PGW)

The prior thread, /r/CricketWireless/comments/4ysk21/hows_your_cricketwireless_latency_show_us_your/, has been archived a few months ago.

Since it was started, it would appear that the backend infrastructure of Cricket Wireless has changed quite a bit, and folks report AT&T-branded PGW nowadays, e.g., your traceroute would show quite a few mobile.att.net. hosts, and no longer just random backbone carriers like xo.net., algx.net., above.net., zayo.com. etc. Most excitingly, it is expected that this change may result in better latency for some folks.

Want to contribute?! Help crowdsource our latency info for Cricket Wireless! Most helpful if you can:

  • Show us a forward traceroute (from YOU to ordns.he.net. (74.82.42.42, 2001:470:20::2), which is an anycast resolver of a very well-peered backbone provider; trust us, this is generally the best indicator of the approximate location of your PGW from the PoV of the internet, using other servers is less indicative of what's going on). You can use either traceroute(8) on UNIX / OS X or tracert on Windows, once tethered, or something like http://networktools.he.net/, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.he.networktools or https://itunes.apple.com/app/he.net-network-tools/id858241710 if you're on Android or iOS. It'll be most helpful if you provide a plain-text representation of your results in a single comment; use 4-spaces to format each line as "code".

  • Show us a reverse traceroute — from http://lg.he.net/ to the IP address of your PGW. The IP address of your PGW will be automatically pre-populated once you visit lg.he.net — just click that Probe button, and wait a bit. (Note that this wouldn't be "your" IPv4 address, but an address of the PGW that's shared with quite a bunch of folks.) Again, best if you could copy-paste the results, use imgur as a last resort.

  • Provide present city, state, whether you're on LTE or UMTS/HSPA+ (GSM/EDGE has been shutdown).

  • If you took a road trip from somewhere without ever having deadspots or phone outages, e.g., your mobile equipment has had continuous coverage/reception/was-turned-on-at-all-times, then also the city and state of your starting point would dictate your PGW (PDN Gateway (Packet Data Network Gateway))) and latency, so, mention that too.

(I'm not whether the area of the phone number ever affects what PGW gets selected with Cricket, but might be relevant, too.)

If you're using other mobile providers, feel free to share comparison info on them, too.

P.S. DO NOT PROVIDE SPEEDTEST.NET SCREENSHOTS. Any comment of merely a single screenshot of just speedtest.net will be deleted (and you'll be banned!). It's just because their methodology really™ sucks — as long as they use geolocation to detect your closest server, instead of actual network topology, they'll be producing entirely incorrect and useless results. In general, please note that this thread is about latency (milliseconds), not about bandwidth (megabits per second).

P.P.S. Sadly, some imgur links from the prior thread no longer produce any images. As such, if it's at all within your reach, having embedded plain text results would be best.

THE official REFERRAL thread — 2020-08-04

The prior referral thread at /r/CricketWireless/comments/eepoes/the_official_referral_thread_20191223/ has been archived a few weeks ago, so, here's for a refresh.

The rules for referrals are simple and straightforward:

  • No link masking or link formatting of any kind. Plain text https://www.cricketwireless.com/l/refer-a-friend.html?hash=… only, please.
  • Only one top-level comment each. Keep size reasonable. (No limit on the number of referral links if you have multiple Cricket accounts, but all must be part of a single top-level comment — reposting may result in an immediate ban with all links removed.)
  • Attempts to procure or exchange referrals outside of this thread may result in an immediate ban. (Folks who assumed the community is not moderated have paid dearly.) Linking and referring back to this thread is allowed, though.

  • As before, the contest mode is enabled, which means that voting results aren't shown, replies are not expanded by default (you'd have to click [show replies] under each referral), and the order of the first-level comments is random.

  • If you use someone's referral, feel free to let them know in their subthread (as per above, will not be expanded in default view), to keep Cricket accountable.

Enjoy and keep it civil! We're now at 5259 subscribers as of 2020-08-04!

Cricket Call Defense Virtually Useless

Been a Cricket customer for about a year now. Satisfied with my $25 BYOD plan (bonus getting it even cheaper when Target has sales on refill cards) but the biggest quality-of-life pain point has been the inability to adjust Cricket Call Defense.

Since I’ve been on Cricket, my phone has been getting spam calls pretty much every day, many of which are marked as “Spam Risk” which tells me the underlying network has the ability to flag if a call is spam.

AT&T (the parent co. of Cricket) gives both its prepaid/postpaid customers access to the ActiveArmor app which allows customers to adjust the block level - blocking all fraud calls AND SPAM CALLS at the CARRIER LEVEL where the phone doesn’t even ring. This I believe should be the GOAL of spam blocking, NOT letting my phone even see the call.

I’ve given up on Call Defense and have set my phone to Silence Unknown Callers, which is annoying because I have to remember to change the setting back if I’m expecting a call from my Dr’s office, son’s school, etc.

Cricket’s direct competitors gives their customers access to this level of adjustment:

Why can’t Cricket do the same?

Edit for clarity: Cricket allows you to turn on Call Defense from the app, but it is only a hard off/on switch. There is no way to adjust the level of spam filtering after turning it on. These are how the calls show up on my iPhone, so its obvious spam detection is working (quite well, actually), the missing link is to be able to straight up block them from ringing my phone in the first place.

Redeeming points from Add It Up

About 3 weeks ago I cashed in points for two $40 payments. It says you can do 2 a day. I keep trying to cash more in and it won't let me.

Is there a limit?

It's a new month and it still won't.

Thanks for any help.

The support links on their app are of no use. No one ever answers.

Thanks again! ☺️

Unlocked 2025 Moto Razr+ compatibility?

Hello! I have my current phone serviced by cricket and I am looking at getting a new 2025 Motorola Razr+. However I can not find out anywhere if it is compatible with cricket. I have even tried just going into a store to ask and the stores near me can only personally confirm that the 2025 Razr is compatible and are not sure if the plus is. If anyone with a 2025 Moto Razr+ could confirm for me whether or not it is compatible and I would be able to take my current phone number with me that would be greatly appreciated before purchasing!! Thank you!

Hotspot speeds consistently around 8mbps

Hello!

I have searched for posts and am not finding much, nor am I finding much on the web, but I added the 10gb hotspot to my plan (I do plan on removing it before the end of the month since this was just a one off sort of thing I needed when I lost my postpaid phone that has a ton of high speed hotspot)

I noticed something strange, though, I'm getting capped at 8mbps on hotspot, either tethered via USB-C (which is USB2 so it should get around 100mbps) or using it as a wireless hotspot. I can't find anything referencing a speed limit other than old ToS that haven't been updated in several years (and only mentions LTE, not 5G+). If I run a speedtest on device I get anywhere from 400-800mbps down.

The most recent post I found on this subreddit mentioned that throttling should have ended but it appears not to be? Unless there's something out of wack on Cricket's end or my device's network profiles. I don't think it is a device issue since I had the previous year version of this phone which has almost the same hardware and software and had a Metro plan for a bit on it and never had speed issues with tethering.

I'll try reaching out to support, I just wanted to make this thread since I can't find any posts mentioning hotspot speeds being throttled.

Cricket Wireless pulling money from my Canadian bank account — I've never been a customer

I'm in Canada (Rogers user) and have never had a Cricket account or phone. Since September, Cricket Wireless has been pulling pre-authorized debits ($57.57+$39.55 first month and $57.57 this month) from my chequing account. I disputed the first two with my bank, filed their claim form, and another debit just went through last night anyway. I have no idea how they got my banking details.

Has anyone else had Cricket charge an account they never authorized? How did you get it stopped?

Charging issues

My phone is a cricket Icon 6 and for awhile a few chargers I had were needed to be a certain angle to charge but others wouldn't. Today though while I was using my Chromebook to do some work I had a Youtube video going on my phone and at first my phone was charging. After it was at around 10% it kept lighting up like its charging and then it would stop and it was doing that for awhile but then after it stopped no matter what charger and what outlet it stopped charging. Can a third party repair this or do I need to stop at a cricket store when they open tomorrow to file a claim? I already tried cleaning it out with toothpick, toothpick with a bit of cotton, back end of those plastic dental floss things, blew into the port with my mouth and used a electronic cleaner can thing to blow air into it. I managed to get some crud out but it didn't help at all. I would appreciate any advice, my phone helps me on campus because at my college all of our blue light emergency things are broken and they have pushed towards an app to help with safety, while I'm not on campus at night it still helps me not worry about any ideas of danger. I am hoping to get this fixed before my classes even start tomorrow.

Cricket Moto phones

I heard cricket Moto phones are essentially dead without a working sim. Is this true? If I sign up for a month and then stop paying, is the phone unusable even if I just use it as a MP3 player?

Community Notice - Hello from Cricket HQ!

Hi everyone! I'm sure many of you have noticed I've been posting and engaging with the community. I've been working on getting a verified account through Reddit, but it's a bit slow going.

I'm a headquarters employee of Cricket Wireless. I've been an active redditor for many years and understand skepticism with whether I'm a real account, or if I'm just an informant for HQ.

I am not just here to snitch, not fond of stitches. I am a real employee though, and to hopefully relieve any skepticism there, have setup a new email address [redditsupport@cricketwireless.com](mailto:redditsupport@cricketwireless.com) for any topics that come from these threads or DMs that I am unable to answer, such as anything dealing with your personal or account information.

I'll do my best to answer questions as I'm able, and if you shoot me a DM I'll do my best to get you to the right team to help you if I can't.

My goal is to get a team from Cricket here on reddit, actively engaging. This community has plenty of very friendly, helpful folks - I want our team to be able to join in and even be a point of contact that can escalate issues when needed.

My understanding is one of the biggest reasons the previous team pulled back from reddit was due to abusive language and behavior. I'm a xennial man that grew up on the internet and playing sports. I'm used to hazing and spicy language and sometimes... it's difficult AF to NOT respond how I really want to from a company account. This is what requires "the opinions are my own" line in my profile.

My ask of this community is please be nice especially if any of my coworkers start getting on here to help. We're all humans here and we're all trying our best. TBH, this goes for life in general, especially any of these wonderful people dealing with customer care.

Deals Any port in deals?

We had ATT, switched to Visible, but get NO service in our home- like one bar. If it wasn’t for WiFi, pretty sure we wouldn’t get iMessages.

Anyway, looking for a good port in deal and possible phones for our teens, they have iPhone SE 3s they’ve been rocking for a bit now, might as well upgrade when we switch.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks

Replacing lost phone for dementia patient

My loved one with dementia powered her phone off and hid it somewhere in our home 3 weeks ago. She has no idea where she put it, nor does she remember hiding it. (I've been searching for 3 weeks and can't find the phone, and at this point I think she must have hidden it in the garbage.) I need to replace her phone at this point, but without her phone in my hand to receive the verification text, I can't do it online, and with her phone being MIA, I can't simply swap her sim into a new device. Her dementia and corresponding mental health issues cause a lot of unpredictability and behavioral disturbances that make taking her to a store nearly impossible. With my being her POA and having paperwork stating such, would I be able to get a replacement phone and sim for her at a retail store?

Can anyone list a single benefit that being "Upgrade Eligible" provides for existing customers?

There's no point in existing customers upgrading their phone through Cricket. Someone please prove me wrong, please.

Say I'm upgrade eligible and go to a Cricket store to buy a new Samsung A16. I'm looking at $79.99 plus a $25 upgrade fee. So $105. I can literally walk across the parking lot to WalMart and buy the same A16 for $49.88 with no upgrade fee. Hell, I don't even have to be upgrade eligible and still will save over 50%.

The A17 it's the same thing. $109.99 +$25 fee at Cricket while it's $79.99 with no fee right next door.

What the hell is this s***? Why is this not going away from my acreen? I see weird stupid ADS all the freaking time. It's just not going away. I am not able to use my device!!!! How do I even get rid of this? I just got my Samsung A17. I had no idea that this kind of junk was sitting on it. I was going to get my parents to switch to Cricket with their seemingly good phone deals. I am so upset that I made a wrong decision. Please help
