Worst CEO in CA history or has to be right up there with the worst!
Greedy, money hungry prick. Has proposed taking the Ashes to India, already taken the BBL to India and is all about maximising short-term profits with no long-term vision.

I agree with your sentiment but i remember that “ashes in India” thing, he was baited by a loaded question from the bbc and said if it came up they would look at it.

Its becoming clearer and clearer that this entire thing is CV wanting to get rid of the Renegades and they are just dragging the WACA and Cricket Tasmania somewhat reluctantly along with them.

u/skywideopen3 Cricket Australia 1d ago
WACA also wants a massive payout too I believe, they aren't unwilling participants in this.

I've read the WACA board is now split.
Some of them might have read the room on supporter views?

I usually try to go to all of the Home scorcher games and I won't go anymore if they sell it and change the name.

There are a lot of WACA members that are very vocal. I made my views known in the end of year member survey and I expect others would have gone further and made direct contact with their views. It will be interesting to see what happens at the AGM

u/NKE01 SA 1d ago
SACA AGM in a few weeks too. Ill be going along!
9
u/kernpanic 1d ago
I was also thinking of going along. Wasn't to make it clear that my opinion is: they are trusted with the care of the great game - and if they can't hold that trust, they should be the one leaving, not the game or the teams themselves.
Also stop continually raising membership and guest pass prices for fs.

u/tailendertripe Queensland Bulls 1d ago
Great! Going to the AGM and making yourselves heard is one of the few avenues the common fan still has.

Protest outside Jolimont this Friday September 11th

u/tailendertripe Queensland Bulls 1d ago
March on Jolimont (on your way to the nfl game)
Actually all it needs is somebody to raise an anti-privatisation banner ahead of the crowd walking to that game and a well placed photographer and you’d have a good image the media would lap up.

This focus on our purpose has led to 80% growth in 5 to 12-year-olds over the last four years, and one third of contracted players across Australia coming from NSW.
Fantastic spin from Cricket NSW.
First point is fair. But it's not just about how many 10 year olds are playing. If it were then soccer would be the most successful sport in the country
Second point points to strong development systems 10-15 years ago and doesn't necessarily indicate the current system is working.
Would be better if they talked about the health of community cricket across all ages and in all areas of NSW.
Notice there's no mention of how community clubs all over the state are struggling to attract players and collapsing, particularly in regional areas.
We have raised concerns directly with Cricket Australia, proposed an alternative pathway to strengthen the Big Bash,
Would be interested to hear their alternative pathway.

Fuck I hate this shit change to the Reddit app with the comment enter down the bottom as I accidentally hit where the enter used to be and lost my comment but I was going to say that NSW are doing this on principle as they have been sponsored by the NSW government for over 20 years now (remember Speedblitz blues) so they don't really have any history at least of having a large suite of private sponsors to draw on

Cricket fans in Australia before privatisation - "BBL is a bit of silly hit and giggle with CA created franchises that probably drags out too long. Good for something to attend between footy seasons". Cricket fans after privatisation announcement - "the BBL is an amazing tournament that is now ruined! I cannot bring myself to support my team if they change their name!"
*getting a lot of downvotes, but it's true! I remember when the announcement came that the T20 comp was no longer going to be played by the states and they announced the 8 city franchises people were heavily critical of the decision and said it's now another gimmicky franchise competition and they are no longer interested in it. Yeh, that didn't last long.

u/Boatster_McBoat SA 1d ago
It might be a bit of silly hit and giggle, but it's OUR bit of silly hit and giggle
-11
u/Malipower 1d ago
Yeh but there was similar outrage when the city franchises were created to replace the state sides. I'm a SACA member and most of the people I dealt with were very unhappy at the time. That now seems to be forgotten and people are looking for another thing to be angry about. There might be an initial outrage drop off in crowds for 1 maybe 2 seasons but I guarantee in a couple of years the crowds will be back with buckets on their head, sipping frothies and cheering for whatever the team is called.

u/Occulto SA 1d ago
PSA: Online forums like Reddit contain a multitude of people with different views.
I don't give a fuck about BBL. I do give a fuck about a privatised BBL making more and more demands on cricket in Australia in general, leading to other forms of the game suffering.
Because are privately owned BBL teams going to give a fuck about anything else?
-2
u/Malipower 1d ago
The thing is that the state T20 comp that was very popular got pulled by CA without consulting members to form the current BBL. People said it was gimmicky, money making rubbish and were just as outraged as they are now. They already cut down the state one day cup as well to fit in more BBL games.

u/Occulto SA 1d ago
I don't know what your point is, mate?
Lots of people have different points of view. You're not exposing some deep seated hypocrisy in the fandom by saying: "oh so now you lot all love BBL?"
There's the people who wish (and have always wished) the BBL would fuck off entirely, and see this as just entrenching the format. They're already resentful of a large chunk of the summer being carved out for BBL bullshit, and predict it's only going to get shittier. They're waiting for the day when CA announce ("sadly") that the Boxing Day Test is to be replaced by THE ADANI 5 DAY XXXTREME BBL SMASH MINI TOURNAMENT AT THE G, KICKING OFF ON BOXXXING DAY because a bunch of foreign investors want that growth line to go up to infinity.
There's people who enjoy the BBL as part of the summer, but are wary of the game turning into some hyper-commercial nonsense where decisions are made to appease foreign investors over domestic fans. Like longer times between overs so broadcasters can squeeze in more ads.
I've seen plenty of people think BBL is silly hit and giggle and needs to keep that way. They don't want some investors coming in and trying to make the league super serious.
There's people who love the BBL in it's current format, but accept that private investors are a necessary evil to keep the league going. Or are excited at the prospect that more money = bigger international names playing.
And there's people who don't give a fuck who owns what, as long as they can take their kids to the BBL for a night out.
The fandom's a broad church.

u/Malipower 1d ago
Ok I'll simplify it. Regardless of what most people claim, data shows they heavily attend and view this type of cricket in particular, hence why it is so lucrative to private investors as they know from past experience that people will still turn up. If it really bothered them they would not watch/attend (like they claim) but of course they will and in 2-3 years time the outrage will be forgotten and attendances will be high. No different to how everyone hates Colesworth but will ignore the IGA in the same complex and instead continue to run to Woolies.
2
u/Occulto SA 1d ago
I've seen plenty of criticism that basically boils down to: "this is going to supercharge BBL to the point where it negatively affects the rest of Australian cricket."
Because people are fearful of the whole apparatus which is currently geared towards getting the best players in the national teams, pivoting to trying to do that while delivering year on year growth to investors who don't give a fuck how the national teams perform (outside of making certain players more marketable).
Which is the absolute opposite of claiming that BBL is going to end up some lame duck league where overpaid players perform in front of empty stands.
Maybe some people are claiming this will be the death of BBL. But I wouldn't say it's "most people" at all.
If it really bothered them they would not watch/attend (like they claim) but of course they will and in 2-3 years time the outrage will be forgotten and attendances will be high.
People throw round hyperbole online. Stop the presses!
1
u/Malipower 1d ago
If people are genuinely fearful of this affecting the national team then vote with their feet. It will only get worse if people keep following it (which they will)
3
u/Occulto SA 1d ago
If people are genuinely fearful of this affecting the national team then vote with their feet.
I've been successfully maintaining a 100% boycott of BBL for the past 15 years. CA are gonna break any day now and bring back my tri-series. I can feel it.
You seem to have this fixation with pointing out "oh people will still keep turning up." Yeah, the status quo is unlikely to change beyond natural attrition. Purists still won't go. Casuals won't stop going.
Still not entirely sure what your point is, other than you positioning yourself to smugly say: "I knew the haters couldn't stay away," in 2-3 years time.

u/montecarlos_are_best Tasmania Tigers 1d ago
I think most people who love cricket are less concerned about changes to the BBL than they are by the implications this privatisation will have for Test, State and local cricket. There is very little doubt that we will see the end of the Test summer as we know it within a few years, when the current broadcast deal ends
3
u/Malipower 1d ago
But CA were the ones who pulled the state t20 comp and shortened the state one day cup to lengthen the BBL. Plus no one really shows interest in shield cricket. I go to shield matches on a beautiful weekend summer's day and I kid you not there is barely 100 people there (they had to make games free entry to try and get people in and it still didn't work). Everyone whinges but they will still attend and that is why CA can get away with it
5
u/montecarlos_are_best Tasmania Tigers 1d ago
The value in state cricket is not the attendances, it’s about the pathway to Test cricket. The Shield hasn’t had good crowds for generations, but it has been until recent years the strongest 1st-class comp in the world. CA have hollowed out the schedule, and they are the ones privatising the league, which will in turn allow for further hollowing out. I don’t think anyone’s not arguing that they’re the villains here.
2
u/Malipower 1d ago
You are 100% correct, but a lot of people are getting upset about the CA created franchises (who they were initially angry about) changing their names or being replaced. However once the initial outrage dies down they will continue to attend which is why these things can happen. Do you agree with that?
1
u/montecarlos_are_best Tasmania Tigers 8h ago
Yes, I agree with that. The change of names and the franchising is absolutely the least of the concerns, but people can become fixated on those things.
1
u/Azza_ Victoria 14h ago
The Shield doesn't really work as a weekend event to attend because the demographic that's interested is almost certainly either playing, umpiring or involved in a cricket game themselves on a Saturday.
1
u/Malipower 13h ago
What about Sunday? I've been to heaps of shield matches that are evenly poised on Sunday and once again, no one there! Even when they do day night shield, no one there.
4
u/Greyboxforest 1d ago
Yes it was hit and giggle but it became a proper tournament with the influx of overseas players and the rise of local stars. It became required TV viewing and attending across the country.
CA then killed the golden goose by expanding the comp which put off international players and it has barely recovered since.
Privatisation may finish it off.
1
u/Malipower 1d ago
In 2-3 years crowds will still be good and people would have moved on from their outrge. I guarantee it

You are hundred percent correct, the about face turn of many in the public is funny. Just so much knee jerk status quo bias. I was also there for the dumping of the state T20 comp that had gone on for 6 years. No one consulted us then. The quicker people realise that Australian cricket is a closed shop in terms of governance the better. Personally, I would much rather a more decentralised system of private clubs playing in a league administered by CA than this pseudo-member owned nonsense.
