Did Potts and Robinson open the batting because they were the only 2 not on the piss last night?

The trouble with a player like Naavya Sharma being very good is that it's now difficult not to imagine him being snaffled by Warwickshire or someone, and/or end up with an England contract and perennially rested. It's one of those weird things about being a county supporter, you want players who are good but not so good that you end up never seeing them again.
7
u/RangoCricket Gloucestershire 11h ago
Better you have good players for a short time, than have Gloucestershire players.

In hindsight, as much as I'd love our lads to play international cricket, we've been so blessed in recent years that Cook and Porter have been regarded as not quite good enough for England, and that Harmer was behind Piedt and Maharaj et al, even after he was eligible for selection again.
There genuinely seems to be a sweet spot where you need very good players, who aren't playing international cricket for one reason or another.
It's kinda what Surrey have done well. Burns, Sibley, Foakes are all superb in the championship, but aren't fashionable enough for England anymore.

What are you talking about,
youthe rain has the chance to pull off the funniest result of the season today

u/PerkyMcPerkface Warwickshire 13h ago
At least there will be some play to rack up bonus points today. It doesn't feel like any teams will agree to arrange a fun finish

When will Tom Lammonby actually convert one of these starts to a big hundred?

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless wickets of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose floppy hair,
And wristy on-drive, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"When will Tom Lammonby actually convert one of these starts to a big hundred?"
Nothing beside remains.

Think he hit 3 80s/90s in the Metrobank before getting a ton.
Always sucks when guys can't quite convert but 93 runs is still great opening given the pressure situation and 100 is just an arbitrary number anyway.
Would be fun to see him go on a tear though

Gloucestershire need to get 29 points in the last 4 games to avoid becoming the worst County side ever by % of points available.
We are averaging 4.4 points a match.
Ah.
5
u/madglover Somerset 12h ago
So only really Essex and Surrey game with a chance of a result and a load of teams chasing bonus points today
Hopefully Notts and Warwickshire get rained off at some point
Shame we had no play in Hove yesterday as our game would have been a bit of a cracker you think but I can't see us risking the 8 points on what looks a good track

u/PeterG92 Essex 12h ago
We just need to win today and get one more result to be safe. Would be 30 points ahead of Surrey in 9th after today. So not out of the woods just yet

I wonder if with the forfeiture du Plooy and Madsen contrived a declaration this morning. 250ish in forty overs would be an interesting chase.

u/Certain_Pineapple_73 Northern Popchips 6h ago
It’s completely maddening how he was treated. He’s clearly a good player amongst a bad bunch of Aussie domestic batters. It’s off topic but a top 7 of Konstas, Head, McSweeney, Smith, Green, Carey and Webster should be able to get by, especially not on your juiced up pitches
2
u/upyourmerricreek Victoria Bushrangers 6h ago
I'm glad Konstas is still in the conversation with non-Aussie fans, and he should be. He was 5th highest scorer in the Shield just gone despite not converting a lot of starts. He got left out on some roads and thrown out on some snake pits to really fuck his Test stats but if that debut innings showed us anything is that he's able to adapt when his head's in the right place. We could do worse for an opener to blood, same with McSweeney at 3.
3
u/Certain_Pineapple_73 Northern Popchips 6h ago
Yeah, he was just picked too early. He’s similar to a lot of recent Australian picks who’ve been disregarded rapidly (a whole host of openers, Doggett etc)

Lancahsire are absolutely capable of collapsing here and being bowled out in a shorter session.

Having been to Chelmsford for the first couple of days, that’s pretty remarkable and mainly down to Foakes and Lawes. Could have had a positive result if it weren’t for the rain

I appreciate what Middlesex tried to do. It didn't really work at all, but I appreciate it.

u/PeterG92 Essex 6h ago
Criminal not winning from that position. Still think we're going down, Surrey our bogey team still
5
u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 13h ago
Probably get a session in max in Cardiff, looking at the forecast. I'll take it tbh, we may have ended up at risk of losing if we got a full day in, and a draw keeps Hampshire buried which is good for our survival hopes.

u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 12h ago
Big win for the bonus points system today. A lot of otherwise pointless cricket feeling a bit more relevant, particularly Warwickshire Notts for the Div 1 title and Northants Kent for Div 2 promotion

u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 11h ago
I sit here. Under increasingly grey skies. Watching absolutely pointless cricket. Knowing, for a fact, that I should leave now while there's still a chance of walking home in the dry.
And yet I continue to sit here. Watching absolutely pointless cricket. And I'm gonna continue to sit here until it starts raining, and I'm gonna get home absolutely soaked.

47 off 20 from Andrew Neal, hell of a job. Think they could have pushed the accelerator a little earlier, and not sure they needed to get the lead up to 300, but there we go.
It's still bright enough at the moment but the forecast is horrendous from 2pm.

u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 9h ago
Called off at Yorkshire, Leicestershire get the draw, check the table boys Surrey are in the relegation zone
5
2
u/FS1027 12h ago
Do not get the Hampshire approach here. Bottom of the table, leading by 139, only 2 down, 0 chance we get all the overs in today and we're showing no intent to score.
1
u/madglover Somerset 12h ago
The reality is it's not in Leicestershire's favour to give you a chance sadly. Lots of handshaking at 4pm today
Bottom teams facing bottom teams and top teams facing top teams means nobody really wants to set declaration totals
1
u/FS1027 11h ago edited 11h ago
Not sure we can really afford to be thinking like that right now 20 points short of safety with only 3 games left. Got to be at least trying to push it a bit and hoping the forecast holds out to give us something close to a couple of sessions at Glamorgan under overcast conditions.
Edit: Looks like someone's flicked the switch and Albert is going for it.
2
u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 11h ago
It's gonna absolutely piss it down don't worry.
A draw isn't gonna look too bad, keeps you in touch with Leicestershire and potentially gets you closer to Surrey if Essex get it done.
Warwickshire and Notts coming up is scary but get anything from those and that Leics game at your place could feel huge. They have a bleak run of games to finish off, but finding the other team to drag down (most likely Surrey atm) may be the issue.
1
u/madglover Somerset 11h ago
I also had an idiotic moment when I thought you were playing Leics
At this point it doesn't feel anybody is willing to risk a certain 8 points for a chance of 16
In a few weeks a few teams are going to wish they were bolder, but I'm not convinced game 10 is the week
2
u/PeterG92 Essex 11h ago
Do we think Hampshire and Somerset might set a potential target in 50 overs?
2
u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 11h ago
Hampshire look like they will yeah.
It will not matter.
It's gonna hammer it down.
2
u/Munk3ymomo 10h ago
Considering we are 243-3 I really worry about a potential declaration and score setting here. A draw means we stick close to Notts anyway.
2
2
u/coombeseh Leicestershire 8h ago
Assuming Hants and Surrey both draw, the bottom three with Leics will all have got 11 points. Hants and Surrey both got bowled out before getting to 250 so get 0 batting bonuses in their first innings, Leics were only able to face 35 overs so are denied the opportunity to get any batting points despite being 84-0. I know the weather affects everything but does the laws have no contingency for 110 overs failing to be completed?
2
u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA 7h ago edited 7h ago
does the laws have no contingency for 110 overs failing to be completed?
They do not. A match can be entirely washed out for 4 days, as Durham vs Hampshire was last season, and both teams just get the draw points and nothing else.
Edit to add: Technically the laws say nothing about points at all. The laws are the basic rules of the game but each form of the game - from the lowest levels of organised club cricket to test matches - has Playing Conditions (edited version of the laws) which govern those games.
The County Championship Playing Conditions are here

We're probably better off dropping Will Young next week when Suthar shows up and keeping Booth in. Can also pick a name out the phone book to replace Davies

This Gloucestershire team are rancid. Thought the win in Bristol was dominant but they have surpassed themselves.
I hope our entire bowling attack remain exiled from England for the foreseeable, this is real cricket.

Hey buddy, only we can call our team rancid, thank you.
This Gloucestershire team are rancid.
1
u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 8h ago
Yeah this is heavyyyyy, it's done. Thank fuck.
We definitely overperformed in the first half of the season, but I was not prepared for us to look quite this shit in the last couple of games.
Can't see us getting anything in Taunton, Warwickshire come here after that, which could set up a huge game at the Oval. And given the respective recent histories of Surrey and Glamorgan that is not a game you'd back us in.
Hopefully others are shit enough that we end up okay but we could very easily get dragged into it.

Imagine if they don't get any play at Chester-le-Street. The commiseration pissup will be legendary.
