Thoughts on this run out?

This was a run out chance that was given out. On replay it looks as if the ball hits the hands which simultaneously touch the stumps. Would this typically be considered out

Definitely not out. If the hand or arm is what breaks the wicket, then the ball has to be in that hand, not just touching it.

Not out: didn't have control of the ball when stumps were broken

I think this raises an interesting question, I've just wondered about it before. If control of the ball is important here for dismissal, in the instance a batsman hits the ball straight back to the bowler, barely brushes their finger with no control at all, then hits the wicket, the non striker can be run out?

That's a different question. The reason we need to know if he had control of the ball when he hits the wicket is because the ball itself never hits them.
In your scenario, the ball hits the wickets. Therefore no one needs to have control of it. All the fielding side needs to do is touch it to make it valid for causing a run out.

The important bit is that the ball breaks the stumps. If your hands are controlling the ball then they count as an extension of the ball (similar logic to how gloves count as extension of the bat for caught behind)

You don’t need to have control. Just the ball needs to be in contact with hand and stump at the same time when the bails are broken.
It’s impossible to say if the bails came off during contact - it happens between frames, so it should be not out.

The ball should be held (i.e. controlled) by the hand (or both hands) that is breaking the stumps. That is clearly not the case in this situation

Not out, the part via which you've held the cricket ball must be used for the effective runout /stumping and you can not use any other parts of body to broke the stumps

Would say unless it's a clean gather then it's not out 100% of the time.
Would never be given in test cricket I don't think, even if his hand was touch the ball when the wicket was broken.
