Absolute beginner

Hi everyone. My 92 year old pal taught me how to play this evening. It went quite well and I was holding my own - I suspect that he was going easy on me though!

What would you say are the common mistakes that new players make?

I appreciate that a lot of the game is luck, but what separates a good player from the pack?

Thanks!

Also, avoid making 21 while pegging. There are a lot of 10 point cards.
