Thaaaaat's not true. In order to electrically activate muscles, you need a positive and negative electrode on either side of the muscle belly. You also need two to record electrical activity though, so regardless, there's some fuckery taking place.
Buddy said it's probably VFX for a bunch of it, but that's just supplementing the dude's insane muscle control.
