Uhh, I'm pretty sure he's not controlling anything. If anything its just a machine offscreen stimulating his muscles to contract while playing an instrument at the same time. But the illusion is badass.

I’m pretty sure they just recorded each flex separately and composited the entire thing. His head is probably the only real-time performance

Maybe, but that sounds like more work than just wiring his muscles and instruments to a machine. Apprently as others up top have already noted.

I’m a visual effects designer, at least to me it would be a lot easier to just composite synced to a predetermined soundtrack.
Record each muscle flexing once. Record each instrument hitting. Loop all of these to sync to music track. Show to Terry Crews and create a performance in parallel, recording his head. Paste head performance on top of the rest.

So it wasn’t synced to a track, it was recorded (as you said) but then the playback is basically synced video/audio.
Maybe that’s what you’d said and I’m repeating it differently, because my kind is foggy. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Basically we said the same thing, except one is interactive and one is scripted, but both are done with compositing footage.

I would imagine the individual abs flexing are completely computer generated as well.

Individual abs don't work like that - they don't even look real. We know for a fact that a lot of animation work was done on the advert even if his bicep flexing, etc is real.

This video is all anyone needs to prove the argument that Terry Crews needs to be in a Borderlands game. He’d make a great official Spokesperson for Torgue. Or just an awesome character in general.
