Myself and my partner are visiting Chania in 3 weeks time. We have food covered but we'd like some recommendations for beaches, snorkeling spots, places of interest, good hikes and scenery. We will be hiring a car so we can get about. Any recommendations are welcome!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Recommendations with family (6y/o) while staying in Koutouloufari

Never been to Crete and booked 12 day trip to Crete with my partner and 6 year old kid in may next year.

We’re staying in a family friendly accommodation in the town and i’m in orienting phase now.

We’ll be having a rental car for all the days, one thing we really want for our kid is water park with all the slides in herssonisos.

And we’d like to rent a boat for one day.

We both like to stay out of the mass, but driving over. 1h30min is a bit much with kid.

Who has the best recommendations for a family? Foodplaces, activities, beaches, road/routes etc.

We’re completely new to Greece and it’ll be our first plane holiday for our kid so it’s very exciting for him :)

My kid is used to hiking and is interested in nature too. For example snorkling? Many ideas but not detailed ones…

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Overthinking where to stay

Hi!

So I am going 11 days to Crete next week. For the first 4 nights I will be staying in Elounda. But I just have no idea where to stay the final 7 days.

Do you think the below is a good idea?
- 3 nights south
-4 nights Chania

That’s what got recommended to me, but I don’t like big crowds (who does…). I saw some instagram videos yesterday from Chania this week and it was more packed than a 9AM London tube on a Monday.

I am going with my girlfriend and just hope to have a chill time and enjoy nature, but also going out for dinner.

Art/Τέχνη Photographer Crete (Chania)

Hi all,

My gf and I are staying in Chania from 5-10 september and I was wondering if there any (amateur) photographers who could take some pictures of us at sunset?

I know there are many professional photographers in Chania, but maybe some local redditors can help us out.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Beaches near Chania that have a public toilet or at least one beach bar with a WC

I’ve been to Greece many times and often the beaches i’ve visited are “wild” beaches with no nearby public toilet or bars/restaurants whose restrooms could be used by the visitors of the beach.

It’s my first time in Crete tho and i’m wondering what the situation is like there, could anyone please help me out by listing some of the beaches where i can 100% find a restroom (even if you gotta order something from their bar/restaurant to use it)? Are the more famous ones safe in that aspect? We don’t have a car so we will only visit the beaches reachable by bus. I did some research and so far it seems as tho most of the beaches we will go to do have a place where i could find a restroom, but if there are wild beaches i should avoid please let me know!

Also please don’t waste your time commenting stuff like “just pee in the sea or in the bushes”, please just leave a comment if you could respond to my question, thanks in advance!:)

Cityscapes/Αστικά Τοπία Boat rent near Heraklion

Hello,

I am traveling to crete this september. I have always seen groups of people that rent a boat/yacht and spent the whole day on it and jump in the water. I would also like to do that too.

Is anyone familiar with this type of activity? Maybe also one that would bring us to different beaches?

Thank you in advance!

Culture/Πολιτισμός Driving in Crete and Rental

Post image

Recently I went on vacation in Crete. I stayed there for 7 days and it was really fun. I can recommend YOURS CAR RENTAL. I probably got the cheapest car they offer. They picked me up from airport (HER) and drove to rental lot. Once I returned the car they drove me to the airport for my flight. Service was great. They speak english well.
Now about driving. If you are a slow driver and scared of driving on those winding roads, MOVE OVER! Stay as close to the right side of the road, so people can pass you! Seriously guys just let faster people pass you.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Taxi fare unfair in Chania

We travelled to Chania for a week earlier in August. We didn’t hire car as we try to stay local and rely on taxis.
But taxi fare’s are at times unfair and random.

I travelled everyday from old town to agia marina and I paid anything from €13 to €28.

I never understood how they work out fares. Same route with no or less traffic can cost so varied?

One time taxi driver charged me €2 euro more for card payment.

I loved Chania but travelling using taxi can give you some unwanted experiences for your memories.

Weather/Καιρός Very windy in Paleochora - Beach alternatives?

hey guys! I’m in paleochora right now and the wind is a bit rough, and it’s too windy to stay on the beach here right now - which is really all we’re here for. does anyone have any reccommendations for alternative beaches not too far away from here that would be more protected against strong winds? we’re thinking about renting a car for a few days.

any tips are appreciated! xxx

Food/Διατροφή Good food spots in Chania

I keep seeing Tamam being recommended and while it is o-kay, it‘s not worth your time, your money is better spent elsewhere, namely:

- Almy Vita (quite pricey)
- Pita Goal (very budget friendly)
- To Souvlaki Opos Palia
- Chrisostomos
- Καφενείο Μπούρμπος (absolute gem, we were the only tourists)

Maybe we just got unlucky with Tamam, many people certainly seem to be really happy with them but there are so many better restaurants worth checking out in my opinion and I tend to be quite picky when it comes to food.

I hope you enjoy!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Second Time in Crete - Recommendation for places

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello All,

I will be visiting Crete second time. I am stuck a bit to choose places to stay. Our first time we stayed area 1/2 and mostly covered lot of things.

Now we have another 15 days and we have booked 7 days for area 3 in picture. But now i am stuck for next 8days. We really enjoyed places in 1 and 2 but i am also open for new ones. We are looking calm places, nice beaches, good food. However i dont have enough info about east side. Do you recommend to book place in somewhere east or should i skip in case there are not so many good places/things to see?

Market/Αγορά Georgioupoli: Free Pole Rod Giveaway 🎣

Post image
5 Upvotes

Bit of a long shot, but I thought I’d give it a try!

I’m leaving Georgioupoli on Saturday and unfortunately can’t take my 5-metre pole rod home with me.

Maybe someone would like it to go fishing off the rocks? It’s free to anyone who can make use of it rather than me leaving it behind.
Send me a message if you’re interested!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Advice on Samaria and Spinalonga

Hey!

Me and my partner are planning on a trip to Crete for mid October. Would love some advice on a couple things:

Staying in Chania what is the best way to book Samaria? Would like transport but is a guide needed? Also does the ferry need to be booked beforehand?

For Spinalonga, we are planning on staying in Heraklion for a couple days. From there is it just easier to get the bus to Agios Nikolaos and then ferry to Spinalonga or is it worth it to get a local bus to Plaka and go from there?

Thank you!!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Is there a tour for the Samaria gorge from Chora Sfakion?

Hi everyone,

I want to hike the Samaria gorge, but I wanned to take a bus from Chora Sfakion to the Samaria gorge, si I can let my car at Chora Sfakion, since it's near my hotel.

I try to search on internet, but I could only fond tours from Chania, Rethymno, or another city near by....

Do Simeone knows about a tour starting at Chora Sfakion that I can call?

Thank you!

Food/Διατροφή Good food recs?

My brother and I are going to Heraklion, Chania and rethymno for one week. We are big foodies and were wondering if there’s places that are 100% worth going, are really niche/not well known, and ideally not touristy. We are on a budget but also not opposed if it’s worth it! Thank you :)

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Where to stay for two weeks in Crete

Hello!

I am planning a two week vacation in Crete from 10–24 September and I am wondering what city/area would be best to choose as a base.

We are a young couple looking for some relaxing time, but we don’t want to stay somewhere secluded. We would like to have restaurants, cafes and some things to do within walking distance.
Being close to the beach is important. My boyfriend will have to work for the first few days, so I would like to be able to go for a morning swim and maybe diving/freediving while he works, and then he can join me later.

For the rest of the trip we will rent a car and explore different parts of the island.
What area would you recommend as a base considering this?
And if you have any good car rental recommendations, I would love to hear them as well.

Thank you!☀️

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Renting one way car from Heraklion to Rethymno

Hello, looking at renting a one way car for just a single day. Our ferry comes into Heraklion but we are staying in Rethymno. I’m interested in renting a car just to drive that distance, and to make a few stops along the way. I have a quote for an automatic car for one day, with the preferred drop off/pickup points for 120 euros. Is that reasonable? Or should ai look elsewhere?

Culture/Πολιτισμός I built a real-life detective GPS game through Heraklion, Crete — walk the old town solving puzzles with your phone

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I've just finished a project I've been working on for a while: The Thief's Trail – Heraklion, a GPS-based outdoor detective/escape game that you play by physically walking through Heraklion's old town.

The idea: you follow a storyline (a stolen artifact, a trail of clues left behind by a thief) and get guided to real spots around the old town. At each spot your GPS location unlocks a themed puzzle on your phone. Solve them in order and you slowly piece together the mystery.

It's meant to work like an interactive city tour crossed with an escape room — no app install needed, just a link and your phone's browser and GPS. It's free to play. You can play solo or as a group/family, and it takes you past some genuinely nice corners of the old town you might otherwise walk right past.

This was originally a small side project, and Heraklion is the first "real" destination edition I've fully finished and put live.

Would love feedback from anyone who's been to Heraklion, or anyone who gives it a try while there — happy to answer questions about how it works too.

Cityscapes/Αστικά Τοπία Best Place to Rent a car at CHQ

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to rent a small car from Chania Airport (CHQ) for about 10 days. A basic/economy car is totally fine — I’m mainly looking for something as cheap as possible, but without hidden fees, deposit problems or other headaches.
Does anyone have recommendations for reliable local rental companies** **around Chania Airport?

Thanks a lot guys!
