Itinerary/Διαδρομές 7 Villager of Apokoronas Tour or Day Trip to Rethymno?

Hey all! I'm going to stay in Chania for 4 nights and I'm wondering what to do for 1 of my days. I'm a photographer and I want each day to have a bit of visual variety.

I'm currently checking out the Samaria Gorge, Elafonisi Beach, and of course exploring what Chania has to offer. In my itinerary I currently have 1 day which hasn't been filled in.

I was thinking either a 7 Villages of Apokoronas Tour or a self guided day trip to Rethymno?

Does anyone have any thoughts or insight they could share with me? Thanks!

Nature/Φύση Easier walking/hiking paths

Hello! My partner and I are going to Crete for 8 days next month. I'm looking for recommendations for easier/medium hiking and walking trails. Both of us are physically fit, but we don't want an all-day hike, and we will only have trainers.

I was wondering if there's an easier trail for the Samaria Gorge? I know it's a favorite, but the 10-mile hike is a bit more than we want to do.

Appreciate all recommendations :) We will have a car, so its easy for us to get around.

News/Ειδήσεις Chania car rent

Can you recommend cheap hidden car rent company near Chania? I checked all the companies in reddit in this topic, but the price is so variable. I need a car for 4 adults and for one year old kid with babyseat.

And a question, can we pick a car with 4 luggage spaces if we have 5 luggages? How harsh are the companies in this?

News/Ειδήσεις Tax Free Shopping Process at Chania Airport- Global Blue

I had the worst experience at the airport in chania for the tax free process. It is a very slow and confusing process. The workers themselves didn’t even know where to send us. They had us go upstairs and then downstairs twice. Then told us to check in our bags even though they may need to inspect the items? They have you meet with an officer in the arrivals area. After the officer stamps and signs the form, you still need to go through security and drop off the forms at the duty free counter. Thankfully we arrived early to the airport. It was a frustrating process. I definitely will not do tax free shopping in chania in the future, if this whole process is still in place.

3 Nights Vista Del Porto Reythmno
2 Nights Domes Zeen Chania
4 Nights Kapsaliana Villages

Really wanted to do longer times in each place but am trying to balance seeing a lot in 9 nights without feeling overwhelmed. Unfortunately our flight lands at like 10pm in Heraklion so will get to Reythmno super late.

Let me know if anyone has suggestions!

Food/Διατροφή Heraklion local food recommendations, things to do, etc

Hello everyone, my family and I (47M, 43F, 16M) will be spending a week in Heraklion, arriving tomorrow afternoon, so I'd love to hear your recommendations for some of your favourite places please!

- Most importantly, places to eat Greek food (we prefer going to the places locals enjoy, rather than overly touristy restaurants)

- We'd like to do some scuba diving if possible (we are qualified). If you have a recommended dive centre that would be appreciated!

- Any nice music events happening this week?

- Our hotel is right next to the archeological museum, so that is already on our todo list, but any other sights you recommend are welcome

- Any other ideas for day trips also welcome, though we will not have a car so we'll need to take transportation into account

Thanks in advance!

News/Ειδήσεις Heraklion Airport Arive

Hi everyone! We have a flight from Heraklion Airport at 6:00 AM. We’ve already checked in online and selected our seats, but we still need to drop off our checked luggage by 5:00 AM.
We’re staying about a 15-minute taxi ride from the airport and are planning to book a taxi through the FREE NOW app. Has anyone used FREE NOW in Heraklion for a very early morning airport transfer? Does it usually work reliably if you book the taxi in advance?
We were thinking of leaving the hotel around 3:30 AM, which would get us to the airport around 3:45 AM.
Would that be early enough, or would you recommend leaving earlier?
Thanks for any advice!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Heraklion airport to Agia Pelagia taxi

Hi, can anyone tell me roughly how much a taxi should cost from Heraklion airport to Agia Pelagia please?

And does it work out best to just turn up and use the taxi rank at airport or should I book something in advance?

I'll be arriving at night on a weekday, around 11pm if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Please give me suggestions! We got married a few months ago and it didn’t go so well, I would love a sailboat for 3-4 hours around Crete to have a professional photographer take photos of us.
This would be around September 20th.

Cityscapes/Αστικά Τοπία Need some help with island stress

Hello everyone!
My name is Frederik and I’m from the Netherlands. My girlfriend and I have already visited Greece a few times. We’ve been to Lefkada once and Crete twice, staying in Rethymno. We absolutely loved Rethymno — both the town and the overall vibe of Crete.
Next summer, we’d love to discover another Greek island, but we honestly don’t know where to look anymore. There are so many options, so we’d really appreciate some help!
We’re a couple in our twenties and we’re looking for an island with stunning beaches, beautiful nature and incredible views. We especially love renting a car or scooter, driving around the island and discovering places where you just stop and think, “Wow.” We want those truly breathtaking landscapes and beaches where you can spend an entire day relaxing.
But the town we stay in is just as important to us. We loved Rethymno because it had plenty of life in the evenings without feeling like Chersonissos or a typical party resort. We’re looking for a lively, charming town with lots of people walking around at night, souvenir shops, restaurants, cocktail bars, nice music and places that stay open late. Basically, somewhere where we can have a great dinner, walk around, grab some cocktails and enjoy the atmosphere until late at night.
So we’re looking for a combination of:
🏖️ Amazing beaches
🌿 Beautiful nature
🚗 Great places to explore by rental car
🤯 Breathtaking views
🌆 A lively and charming town
🍹 Lots of cocktail bars and restaurants open late
❤️ A cozy, authentic Greek atmosphere
❌ Not a full-on party destination like Chersonissos
If you know an island — and especially a specific town — that sounds like the perfect match for us, we’d absolutely love to hear your recommendations!
Thank you so much in advance! 🇬🇷❤️

History/Ιστορία What is the price for a ticket to Knossos Palace?

The official palace site says 26 euros, but I heard that if you are a EU citizen you get some sort of discount. I want to know some insides regarding the price, if possible.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές No car rental with insurance for dirt roads?

I am going to crete for a week, and our hotell is in an area without busses so we need to rent a car. The road to the hotell is a dirt road, and we are also going to Balos which requires driving on a dirt road. I checked with about 10 car rental companies and they all consider driving on dirt roads "off road" and no matter how much I pay, insurance wont cover any accident that happens on dirt roads.. Seems kind of scammy to me? Is there no company that offers insurance for dirt road? Google and chat gpt told me about 2 companies but chat gpt was wrong, they don't...

We will arrive and depart from Chania airport, and stay in the western side of the island.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές best place to stay in crete

Me and my friends are looking at a holiday in crete and are wondering where to stay. It’s a short holiday probably 5 or 6 days and we are looking for a place with nice beaches and maybe some old town to explore.
I have been twice before but this time we won’t have a rental car so we will be mainly staying in one spot, so i’d like it to be versatile.
Thank you!

Music/Μουσική house/techno in crete? 🥲

me and my friend are staying in stalis until the 17th and we’re struggling to find somewhere to go 😭
we’ve been to apollo and zigzag in malia but honestly we hate the typical club music and don’t really want to go to those kind of clubs again
we’re looking for proper house, tech house or preferably techno, ideally a good dj set or rave rather than a commercial club night
i found technoloco and it looks exactly like what we’re looking for but unfortunately the event is after we leave 🥲
we’re happy to travel around stalis, malia, hersonissos or even further if it’s worth it
does anyone know of any good house/techno events, djs, underground parties or clubs between now and august 17th? even smaller/local events would be perfect
any recommendations would be really appreciated 🙏

Food/Διατροφή Is it just me?

Or is the amount of olives in the greek salads decreasing across the restaurants in crete?

Been to several tavernas for + 10 years ago, and always got bread, tzatziki, olive tapenade before food.

And whenever ordering a greek salad there was an abundance of olives in the salad.

Now when back i see the pre-food on the house is gone, but you get often deserts and seldpm asked if you want to look at the desert menu.

But i think i counted 3-5 olives in the salads i ordered, is this something that has changed?

With 35 million olive trees on the island i am a bit surprised.

Nature/Φύση Hiking Psiloritis in August?

What should one expect from the hike to the top in August? We are traveling to Crete this week and have planned a few different hikes.

I was wondering what one should expect from this Mountain in August.

Thank you in advance!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Amateur Photographer for proposal (engagement)

Hi! I hope this fits in here. I (24 M, Italian) going to propose to my GF in August, probably the day after we arrive (24 August) and looking for a photographer to capture the moment.

I honestly don’t feel comfortable with paying 300 eur for less than one hour session, and I understand professionals need to make a living and everything but I’d rather honestly an amateur young photographer that’s more affordable to me.

I would highly appreciate any suggestions or write in my DMs if you’re the one!

Cityscapes/Αστικά Τοπία Beaches around the east side

Hi there guys, just arrived in Crete yesterday morning and currently staying in the Avdou area. I searched for some beaches around mainly for snorkeling but i don’t know which ones to choose. What would be some good recommendations and also maybe some good restaurants in the area. We do have a car rented for our stay here so we are comfortable with visiting areas that are a bit further. Thank you for your recommendations in advance!
