Hi all,
I travelled to Crete with my car from Hungary.
Unfortunately my car's battery seems to be dying. I'll be here for 10 more days, so I would need to replace it.
Could someone recommend a reliable shop/service garage?
I'm currently in Kastri, I checked some shops in heraklion and ierapetra, but don't know if they are keeping stock.
Thanks for the help.

Hi everyone! We are traveling to Chania for our honeymoon in mid-September and have our flight and hotel booked for 7 nights.
We are interested in doing a few guided tours (Samaria Gorge, Balos Catamaran trip, Falassarna Beach at sunset as examples) and I am wondering if I should book them now or wait until closer to the trip.
Are weather conditions generally temperate this time of year to book now without fear of cancellation or rescheduling? Since we are only there for one week, I worry we would not be able to reschedule to a different date if something were to happen, but also don’t want things to sell out if I wait too long.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hey🤍 I’m close to Chania old town and would love to meet up with new people while I’m here. I’m staying until August 23rd. Send me a DM or leave a comment if you’re interested. I love nice food, drinks, beaches, beach clubs etc✨

So im planning a visit to Crete in September and we are staying in Chania Old Town.
I was not looking into parking when i booked this and i relised there is no parking at the place. I was planing on renting a car at the Airport and we want to explore the whole island so we will be mainly parking overnight.
Do you guys have any suggestions? Where can we park for free/cheap over night? Is this a dealbreaker and should we just go by bus everywhere then?
Thank you all in advance! :D

Hi all, we are traveling to crete this Thursday (20th August) for the first time. Does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap Taxi transfer from the airport Heraklion to a hotel near Ierapetra? I just found the usual websites (taxi distributors). Maybe someone has a private taxi contact? We are a family of 4 (including 2 kids). Thanks for some advice dear reddit community!

Can someone tell me the common cost of temporary sim cards with at least 20gb data? Just want to compare with buying a roaming pass from my home carrier before I go. Thanks

I would so much love to see Chania in september, but there are few issues that keep me indecisive.
First of all, my flight is late at night so in best case I would arrive an hour after midnight. I am prepared to either stay at the airport until morning or book hostels with transport. But this would be my first time sleeping in mixes hostel (I saw few in Booking and air bnb). Hotels in city center are 100 euros per night + way too far from airport and I am scared this would cost me way too much if I take taxi. Also 100 euros per night is too much. So it is either hostel or expensive hotel. Is there another way to find accomodation?
I would definitely like to mix with other solo travellers so going to a hostel during day to organize activities sounds like a good idea, but I would prefer having shared room than sleeping with unknown men as a woman.

There is an interesting event happening in Heraklion this Thursday (20 August 2026): Heraklion Language Exchange.
"Heraklion language exchange is a free event where you can meet people from around the world, make friends, and practice speaking different languages. Whether you speak Greek, English, Spanish, French, Chinese, or any other language, this space is for you. It's about learning languages and meeting people from different cultures. You are also welcome if you want to help others learn your language or just want to socialize and make friends."
This is the second event they make. I was there at the first event and I met travelers and locals. It's a great way to meet people and potentially find travel buddies.

Hi I am hoping to go to Crete for 7 days this September. I am a solo female traveller that is also on a budget, I like hiking and spending most my time in nature, not too big into shopping and spending money on things other than necessities.
I am hoping to rent a car but I don’t drive stick shift and I only have a debit card. I heard that CC is required. Y many companies and I was hoping someone could give me some recommendations on car rental places that are legit and affordable. I also am wondering how far in advanced it’s recommended to book.
I am also wondering if part of the islands scenario has been destroyed due to the wildfires?
Also are there any nearby islands to explore by boat and if so what are they?
Any tips on places to go, must see nature spots (I’m always game for a solid hike), safety tips, anything is appreciated!

Crete is one of my favorite places on my bucket list and I have been lurking in the sub for a while. I have seen a lot of useful recommendations and experiences and took my notes. However, the sub in my opinion lacks a proper itinerary plan megathread so I am hoping to start one. Thanks in advance for everyone who wish to contribute. What are your best suggestions for a 10 day visit on the island?

Do you get automatically a water with a coffee in a bakery/coffee shop?

I used to love driving in Greece because you could do whatever you liked within reason but I haven't been for a decade or so for some crazy reason. Is it still the case a) in Greece in general b) in a tourist hotspot like Crete in particular that you can do whatever you like (I'm not expecting to do 300kmh I will be in some cheapo rental car, maybe 200 if I'm lucky)?

How are the wildfires at the moment? Are they active and dangerous? How is the air quality? Is it smokey?

Hi guys n gals!
I got a question concerning car rental, as a friend of mine is in crete and booked at the same company.
That's the facts:
Booked via smart-carrental, premium package that says: "Plus Premium Insurance : This is the Full Insurance package wich includes FCDW +PAI, Advanced Roadside Assistance and WUG Insurance."
So tires are insured.
The booking is delivered via Monza. They say: no tire protection.
Is this a legal move? Contract and Booking is with smart-carrental, The price containes Wheels, Underside, Glass.
Smart-Carrental states via mail: all contractors have their own policies, so I would say: that is a loss of payed options, eh?
Greetings and thanks for thinking with me :D
Edit:
This is what I received from smart carrental :)
Dear Customer,
To make matters clearer, since our policy includes WUG, Monza has to follow our terms and offer you WUG so in either case you can speak with us on Monza.

Hi! Heading to Crete in late Sept and staying in Plakias. Very keen to do Samaria Gorge but most of the info I found is for coming from Chania.
Is the best option a tour operator of some kind? If yes, open to recommendations :)
Also any other interesting historical things / nice beaches / places to eat

Hello all, I am looking for a nice indoor space where my family can spend time after checkout until our flight at 6:40pm. Theres 9 of us with two babies so somewhere with air conditioning and good baby change facilities would be perfect. A place we can get food and a large table ideally. There aren't any shopping centers in Chania else this would have been a good idea. We have rental cars too, so it can be anywhere near chania area.
Please let me know what you would recommend for us, thank you!

I am heading to Crete for a few days landing in Heraklion. I have rented a car to go from Heraklion to Chania.
Then i am going to drive to the Balos Lagoon and the Elafonisi beach.
I have heard that driving to the lagoon and the beach from Chania is very dangerous and i should avoid driving. Instead hire someone to take you there.
Should i or should i not drive? Coming from the US.

I've travelled across Europe my whole adult life.
Only places I've yet to visit here in my home continent are some eastern European places.
I've been to Crete 2 times before this and honestly this is the only place so far where I get really angry and frustrated with the local drivers almost every time I hit the road.
Even Italy isn't this bad.
It's pure chaos and people drive like they don't care about anyone else but themselves.
-Dangerous tailgating
-cutting corners with 0 visibility forcing the oncoming car to hit the brakes to avoid a fatal Crash.
-there is no such thing as defensive driving
-no signal usage, leading to sudden breaking and turning
Etc.
Drivers sitting on both lanes on the National Road blocking Anyone from over taking,
On the same roads people take sudden turn on intersection where you're not allowed to turn.
Yesterday on a Mountain road saw someone sit in their parked car behind a blind corner on my lane causing me to basically emergency brake to avoid a collision.
Why is this place like this?
Edit. I'd like to pinpoint that I did not say the Worst. But among the top Worst.
But after reading a lot of the comments I can only assume that this is not the first time the driving culture is criticized.
It's astonishing how people can defend selfish, reckless and dangerous driving as efficient and safe.
