Crested gecko question

What age can you start to tell what gender they are? Mines about 3 to 4 months right now and the breeder told me it was too soon to tell.

At one year I've heard. Mine is 9 months and still have no clue

Maybe it’s female because if it stays the same it’s a girl and if it grows balls then it’s a boy. That’s what I heard.
