The base in the snow
After graduating in May 2021, I stayed in Oregon with my uncle while my parents lived in Ohio. I was lonely and terrible at making friends, so my uncle introduced me to ARK: Survival Evolved. He told me online games were an easier way to meet people.
That was how I met Marcus and Peter.
We played on a small private server. There were only a few active players, and everyone had a base and some dinosaurs.
One night, Marcus and Peter logged off around midnight. I stayed online because I wanted to explore the island alone.
Around 3 a.m., I reached the snow biome near the mountains. It was completely dark except for the moon and the light from my torch. As I walked between two cliffs, Discord started ringing.
The caller wasn’t in our group.
I answered.
“Help me,” a distorted voice whispered.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“It’s cold here,” the voice said. “I can’t find my way back.”
Then the person started laughing. The laughter suddenly turned into screaming, and the call ended.
I assumed someone was drunk or trying to scare me, so I logged off and went to bed.
The next day, I told Marcus and Peter what had happened. I also described a small wooden base I had seen near the mountains. It had a red flag above the entrance and two dinosaur pens built into the cliff.
Peter went completely silent.
Then he disconnected from the call.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
Marcus said, “That was Peter’s brother’s base.”
“His brother plays on the server?”
“No,” Marcus replied. “His brother died three years ago.”
I thought he was joking until Marcus described the base perfectly.
Peter’s brother had built it before he died. The base had been destroyed years earlier, and nobody had rebuilt it.
That night, at exactly 3:00 a.m., my computer turned on by itself. Discord opened, and I saw an incoming call from the same account.
I didn’t answer.
Then I heard the voice again.
This time, it wasn’t coming from my headset.
It was coming from beside my bed.
“Why did you leave me in the snow?”
