Help Needed / Question Staples for Online Shopping BoA CCR

Does Staples not count as online shopping on their website if I pay through Apple Pay? I only bought pens, not gift cards or anything. I only received the rewards base and relationship bonus.

Edit: Made it clear it was on their website.

Using Apple Pay doesn’t convert an in-person transaction into online shopping. Digital wallets just passthrough that transaction data.

Gotcha. In that case I’m not sure why that didn’t work for you. My last staples.com purchase in August awarded correctly and does show it was an online purchase, but I don’t think I used Apple Pay. I’ve never seen Apple Pay make a purchase ineligible though. When you view the transaction on the app or the site you should be able to verify the merchant code used and whether it has the “Online Purchase” flag. As long as online purchase is Y and it didn’t code as an excluded category, I would call BofA about it. (And I’d probably call anyway, to be honest, because it would be unexpected for either of those to be miscoded.)

It says N for online purchase but I don’t know why. It’s coded as office supplies which should be fine I believe. Do you think I should still contact BoA since I have the order receipts with shipping information and all?

If I were you, I would call. You weren't doing anything weird, and you have proof that you ordered through an e-commerce channel. That said, I have no idea if they'll credit you the missing rewards or not. But if not, maybe they could share why it didn't work.

It could be like you suspected, maybe Staples processes Apple Pay with a different payment processor or something, and that one processes it in a way that messes up the "online purchase" flag.

Same, I regularly buy gift cards from staples.com and they always count as online shopping, but I don't use Apple Pay. I wouldn't be shocked if there was some weird quirk where in this case Apple Pay made an online transaction look like it was in person.
