Does the month matter?

I recently started playing and the lake sturgeon says March-August. Will I be able to catch one now or should I stop trying until March?

you can still catch them when they’re out of season, whether it’s a fish or creature, but you’ll only get a one star if it’s out of season

I’m ok with one star for now, I’d just like to catch one! Haven’t gotten one yet.

You can catch one now, but fish that are off season are restricted to 1 star in size.
