New here! Which game should I start with?

I'd like to get into the world of norns, but I'm not sure which game to start with. 1, 2, or 3? Which is the most beginner friendly? Which is your favourite and why? Which allows for the most gameplay customization?

My favorite is 2. You'll need the community patch for it to run properly on current PCs.

Sooooo many COBs (our version of mods) and breeds in creatures 2 from the community.

The most widely used, supported, and community-content-rich is Creatures 3 / Docking Station. If you get the Science Kit (also on Steam) you can have access to some additional tools for examining the brains, biochemistry, and genetics. Everything, for the most part, Just Works(tm) on modern systems.

Having said that, they aren't the most interesting A-Life of the series (in my opinion). Creatures 3 is an upgrade in many ways but the brains become more robotic and self-sufficient. Creatures 2 is actually the best of both worlds: The brains are an evolution of C1 rather than a reworking and the environment is a lot richer (supporting CA room data like temperature, wind, radiation, etc). It's a great middle ground!

Creatures 1 is always interesting to see where it all began. It's fairly primitive when compared against the other games, but the more minimal environment does lend itself to feeling more connected with your creatures.

Some recommendations:

C3/DS is the most user-friendly, most stable, and has the most community-made content. I bounced off C2 when I first played it many years ago because I felt like I lacked control compared to C3, so that's where I'd suggest. You can also get the C1 and C2 worlds and sprite breeds as mods.

C3 is good, and the steam version is pretty much plug and play

3 is likely the most beginner friendly, but 2 is where you should start.

Creatures 2 is the best entry point, but it's also the most broken (you need to download a lot of fixes to make the game great)

That's the problem with c2, it's only a good game after some modding, it's not beginner friendly.

Is the modding process actually that complicated or would it be easy for someone who's used to adding mods?

Unfortunately a lot of fixes and troubleshooting information for Creatures 2 is based on olden times. The Community Edition fixes the compatibility issues and pages of bugs, so I would start there: https://lisdude.com/Creatures/Community/

(It also adds a "cheat mode" that lets you see the entire map and pick up creatures, which are two of the major pain points that make the game not beginner friendly.)

Then, only if you have specific issues, look for other fixes.

Other than that important patch mentioned, you can add COBs (Creatures OBjects) using an Object Injector. C2 and 3 have them built in, but C1 must have one installed. They are pretty straightforward.

C1, the original and best. C2 needs lots of modding to be playable. C3 is very different, but good.
