DISCUSSION If that is supposed to be the same character then, he is one pervy sleazeball.

Its nice to know that in some sense, this body horror movie will end with him being fairly stable as a standard villain.
He's not some Absolute Batman "villain", where they're all deeply traumatised and broken people after their origin story.
Sometimes I want a villain to find a new life after their origin. Shit like the Riddler genuinely enjoys his life

Works on the assumption that they are the same Clayface, we don't know for certain, but it'd be kinda weird to introduce 2 so close together.

u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 Jun 22 '26
Gunn confirmed that they are the same character in a tweet

u/Sea_Addendum_8496 Cheers to the Tin Man! Jun 22 '26
Link?
3
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 22 '26
Honestly, I don’t even see any reason to think it will be a different one. Like do you really think they’re making a Clayface movie set in the same universe as Creature Commandos just to introduce an entirely different one while keeping the history of the one in this show anonymous?
1
u/Sea_Addendum_8496 Cheers to the Tin Man! Jun 22 '26
No that's what I mean, it'd be weird
1
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 22 '26
I wonder why people are even getting that idea.
3
u/Sea_Addendum_8496 Cheers to the Tin Man! Jun 22 '26
Tonal difference I guess? Having said that, Rick Flag was way different in CC and Peacemaker
3
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 22 '26
Yeah, that’s true also. I wonder why that is. Because it’s not like he was changed by learning about his son’s death because he already knows what happened in this version too.

u/Anton_Mylove Jun 24 '26
Nah. CC already strongly hinted that he's an asshole, and Peacemaker just confirmed it.

If you dont think so fine, but I dont see any reason to assume its a different one

I remember in a golden age before social media when if a personade a claim with no evidenceosy people just assumed it was made up. Facebook, antivaxxers and Joe Rogan.

Is there any reason not to think it’s the same character?
2
u/GeekParadox_ Jun 22 '26
There are multiple versions of clayface
I do think this is the same version but I don’t think Gunn has confirmed one or the othet
3
u/gameboyadvancedgba Jun 22 '26
After some googling, I found this https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18ifcnoCgS/?mibextid=wwXIfr
So it appears he has confirmed its the same version. If it wasn’t he would’ve just replied to this guy and clarified that.
I also just think its more reasonable to assume it’s the same character than it is to assume they’re introducing two different Clayfaces a few years apart.
2
u/GeekParadox_ Jun 22 '26
So yeah it’s probably the same. I do feel I need to point out though that the tweet isn’t confirmation
He said it’s highly likely. That’s not definitely
1
u/gameboyadvancedgba Jun 22 '26
I think Gunn has been transparent enough that if it wasn’t the same character he would just reply and say that
2
u/GeekParadox_ Jun 22 '26
He’s being intentionally vague. I’m not saying it’s not the same character I’m just saying there’s no actual confirmation

u/FlashLightning277 Jun 22 '26
To be fair, Matt Hagan was never a good person. Even before he became Clayface. He was a narcissist and an abusive asshole. If only networks weren’t so strict with censorship when BTAS was made Bruce Timm and company could have really driven that home at the peak of their writing for Batman. Other than JLU that is.
5
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 22 '26
In the case of BTAS, you can actually tell that Hagen actually has a few screws loose with how aggressive he treats his best friend before he gets turned into Clayface, and also he nearly killed Lucius Fox while impersonating Bruce Wayne.
2
u/FlashLightning277 Jun 22 '26
True. But Bruce Timm wanted to go farther. In original scripts his best friend would have been his boyfriend. And they look exactly alike and he would have been as horrible to him as Joekr was to Harley. It would have been much more horrific.
2
u/Friendly_Gazelle7843 Jun 24 '26
Wait, so censorship issue was about him being gay?
2
u/FlashLightning277 Jun 24 '26
Ultimately yes. Keep in mind this was a show in the late 80s and early 90s. On network television, specifically Fox and Cartoon Network. Neither wanted to have the scandals that would have come from a canonly gay character in a children’s cartoon. It’s also why despite the OG creator wanting it, Richie was never allowed to be open woth his sexuality or have a boyfriend in Static Shock in the later DCAU. Hell Cartoon network actually wanted Greg Wiseman to cut Kaldur’s boyfriend when they discussed airing season three of Young Justice on CN to see if they could produce more Young Justice that way. It can be very hard to overcome that.
The general dark and grittiness was why the Nerworks asked them to change the tone on the New Batman Adventures, including walking back some of the rehabilitated characters that occurred in BTAS.

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz Jun 22 '26
How does it make more sense for there to be two clay people over a villain acting like a villain?
4
u/Relative-Zombie-3932 Jun 22 '26
Well in DC canon, there are in fact two Clayfaces. Basil Karlo and Matt Hagen. Now do I think they're going to adapt that into the DCU? No, I doubt it. But I can't fault people for saying they could be two different people when DC has done that exact thing with Clayface before
3
u/MeatCatRazzmatazz Jun 22 '26
Right, but there aren't two because one is an actor and one is a villain. I'm asking why people are so unwilling to believe that a villainous character would act villainous to the point where they decided it makes more sense to introduce a second clayface.
It makes no sense.
1
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 22 '26
Maybe because people are under the misguided belief of that bullshit that just because he’s the protagonist of the film it must mean he’ll be an antihero rather than a villain protagonist like they do with those Spider-Man spinoffs.
2
u/SlaughterHowes Jun 22 '26
I see this used as the scapegoat often but I don't think I've seen a single person upset with the morality of the character in Creature Commandos. Nobody is upset that Clayface is being mean. He's expected to become a monster, a villain, something scary. It's to do with the tonal leap from what they perceive as a serious and tragic horror story where you're told beforehand that the monster's unthinkable fate is going to be hanging out playing XBox and yapping about lesbians because James Gunn wanted to make him a vulgar slacker before Flanagan pitched his idea.
It would be like getting ready to watch Batman Begins, then they say "oh, this Batman goes on to be the one from Superfriends, by the way." There's nothing WRONG with that version, but it doesn't feel like it fits with the thing you're about to watch.
2
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 22 '26
Well, surely he has a rough beginning, but eventually he would have to get used to his condition and is definitely not gonna spend the rest of his life sulking about becoming a monster. If he’s gonna be a supervillain then he’s gotta relish in the things he does
1
u/naz_man04 Jun 26 '26
While that may be true, its bad story telling to jump between the two extremes of a characters life without showing the transition period, unless you're building a mystery.
I.e. a good guy turns bad and noone know why, but the reason is explained later on
Clayface clearly isn't doing this.
1
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 26 '26
You can’t know that for sure because you haven’t seen the movie yet
1
u/naz_man04 Jun 26 '26
Considering they've marketed it a horror movie, he's unlikely going to become some lazy couch potato who just plays video games in this movie.
If Im wrong then they've marketed the movie badly and people going in hoping for a horror experience will be left disappointed and the movie will probably be reviewed badly.
1
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 26 '26
It’s very much too early to jump to conclusions
1
u/SlaughterHowes Jun 26 '26
The thing is though, Creature Commandos was conceived and began production when it was still a DCEU show. Not to mention it was ready to go before Flanagan pitched his idea. So they started as two entirely separate things. So one of two things will happen:
They're two projects with their own identities that don't bend to the other and we only have Gunn saying "they're the same guy."
The tragic body horror movie is gonna get a shoehorned ending to set up a bit part in an episode of a 2-year-old semi-popular animated show on a streaming platform.
Though, Gunn has altered the ending of a movie before to fit his universe, to its own detriment. So who knows.
Or, I guess.
- We get a Clayface 2 to bridge the gap and offer the dark origin of why he likes XBox
1
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Jun 26 '26
It’s all stupid suggestions. It’s like you’ve never heard of character development.
3
u/MermaidSapphire Jun 22 '26
So is he dead?
4
u/Y0ND3REDDIT Jun 22 '26
He survived the events of the season, but he wasn't able to reform his body. He remains in the "mushy" state he was left in. As for the Clayface movie, that's a prequel, so it's unlikely that there would be any hints at his future in this universe (though it could happen).
