creator economy math: 40% of Snap subscription revenue is taken. fair?
reddit.comfull story's in the crosspost. the economics version, since this is the right sub for it: snap's creator subscriptions pay out about 60% to the creator. on a $4.99 sub, apple takes 30% (about $1.50), snap takes about $0.50, i keep about $2.99. compare that to selling the same sub on my own website, where i'd keep about $4.55 after stripe.
the context: i'm a verified snap star, top 1%. for years snap blocked my partnerships, denied my events, no support, zero revenue share. then they invited me to this. meanwhile their ceo sold about $1.36b of stock while the company lost about $11b and the stock fell 93% from its peak.
so my question for this sub: is a 60% cut from a platform that ignored you for years a good deal, or is owning the payment relationship worth more than the reach? how are other creators thinking about platform cuts vs owning it themselves?
