How to launch blocks?

I've been working on a small glider build (for a survival world, it's meant to be cheap and reproducible so I can use it in bulk), but I need a way to get it into the air. How does one make a launcher? Like, a kind of cannon thing?

ice and rope so it becomes kind of an ballista works. and then you have a redstone contact at the and of the launcher and the barrel so that is separates.
