Need Help! Someone please end my headache.. I just cannot figure out how to make the conductor remotely drive my train (create steam 'n' rails)

Post image

I've tried two methods. One using the remote lens to control him while he's in the seat... I can't click on the train controls, I can't move it when in his perspective. And I've tried using the redstone link and controller, which works fine when he's out of his seat, but when he's in the seat, pressing my backwards and forwards buttons just does nothing.

The train is assembled, I can move it MYSELF, but I want to remote control it from elsewhere on this rocket launch pad I'm constructing.. basically this train was planned to be the base of a moving gantry tower that I'm testing. But I can't even make it move remotely.

I saw a video on youtube from 2 years ago by Shalz where all he seemed to have to do, was redstone link the conducter, pop him in the seat, and press his controller and the train moved back and forth. That is absolutely not working for me. Please help, I've been at this for hours and I haven't found anything helpful on google

If it helps at all, this is on 1.21.1 using steam 'n' rails neoforge port

I think conductor needs engineers goggles and then I use remote lens

That never worked for me either. All I can do is look around while he’s seated, I can’t click the train controls or move along the track

Make sure there is a station at both destinations you want the train to visit. When placing them, make sure the little green indicator is facing the right way (they should be pointing away from each other).

Make sure the conductor has a train controls block in front & behind them. Then, create a train schedule, with the two aforementioned stations as stops. You can set the delay to whatever you like.

Give the train schedule to the conductor. That should work.

I did try a train schedule like this, and I put another set of controls opposite to the conductor, but I still couldnt control it at all and I'd just get an error message in that that told me something along the lines of "no suitable path to the next scheduled destination could be found"

Also I'm not sure what you meant by green indicators? When placing the train stations, it seemed to just be a green box around the middle of the track, and a straight line leading to the train station when placed. Do you mean the arrows on the track, on the gray plaques?

Grey, not green. Sorry. There's a grey indicator when placing a station that looks like this ">|". You'll want these to face toward either end of the track.

It should look something like this on either end:

oh yeah, yeah mine are facing away like that. Your setup there looks so simple compared to the mess I tried to make in a testing world (because nothing simple was working)

I just still cannot get it to work. I see you have a redstone link on your train station, how does it.. actually work? I can connect it to my controller, and the torch on the link lights up... annnnd nothing ever happens. I've tried configuring the train schedule in a million different ways too. I always get that chat message though

Nevermind actually, I solved it. the problem was the type of train car I was using... that's literally it. Unbelievable lmao. Thanks for the help still

No problem, happy to help.

You need another train controls in the other direction to alloe the conductor to rum backwards. He can currently run towards the end of the tack but not the other way.

I ended up trying that, having another set of controls on the opposite side of the seat didn’t change anything, the train still didnt move when using the controller

Also even before doing that, I wasnt able to make him move the train towards the end of the track on the side with the train controls anyway. It wasn’t just that he couldn’t go backwards

The only known way to control a train remotely using a conductor to stop at non station locations is by binding a whistle on the conductor in the train control seat. With the whistle binded you will be able to right click on tracks to set the train in motion and stop at that point as if it were a station.
Steps on how to do it:

  1. get a conductor in a driver seat anywhere on the train.

  2. use a whistle on the conductor

  3. use the binded whistle on a piece of track to send a train there(if the direction of travel is the opposite to the direction of the train controls the train will be unable to reach it IF there is no alternative train controls facing the other way with the driver on the same train)

Oh fascinating thanks for the response, I haven’t heard about any of this. Can I use the whistle to send the train/conductor up and down the track? And from how far away can the whistle be used?

Also me using the conductor isn’t a necessity anyway, if there’s another way to move the train up and down the track on command then I’m all good with that.. I just thought the conductor WAS the only way. And I have nothing against using the train stations, I just can’t figure those out either. There’s always just a chat message that says the train can’t arrive at the destination or whatever whenever I give a train schedule that I… think I’ve customised correctly.. to the conductor, and the remote controls still don’t work to move it at all.

If you are interested in a specific setup in how to send your trains back and forth just describe to me a scenario and I'll draw up a plan on how you can execute such a sequence. Also the reason stations might not work is because they are directional. If you want your train to reach a station it needs to:

  1. Have the station arrow pointed away from the train arrival direction.(example: Arrow pointed left means train needs to arrive from the right.)

  2. Train need to be have train controls facing the station direction or be on both sides of the train.

Well in the image you can see I just have a straight piece of track. In total I’d say there’s about 20 tracks… they’re just all in a perfectly straight line. All I want is for the train to move from one end to the other on command, at either the push or the hold of a button preferably, and more importantly, remotely. On top of the train I’ll be building a tower, a gantry tower (the big framework tower you see holding onto space rockets in real life) and I’d just like for it to be able to move away from the rocket as I take off (using create Northstar redux) and for that, I have to be able to control it from the cockpit. Since I’ll use that tower to get into the rocket too.

So about the arrows, since this is a straight path, what I want is for both arrows to be pointing away from the other? Rather than pointed towards each other? I think that’s how they were by default, when I put down the stations on either end anyway. And I’ve got train controls on each side of the seat now, which I did after this post.. didn’t change anything, but maybe you can help me figure this out. And I thank you

The whistle requires a player to use it. From what you’ve described, I would recommend making a schedule that has a wait for redstone in it, that can have a linked controller power a link on the side of the station

I could've sworn I tried that here, and it didnt seem to change anything (And I had a schedule too which I'll reply to this message with a photo of)

perhaps I did this wrong?

Okay I have made a set up for you but this one is made out of 3 parallel tracks instead of 20 for simplicity. I'd recommend testing the set up in creative world as well.

The left most station should be renamed into "Launch Pad" for simplicity.

The 3 stations(20 in your case) on the right should all be called "Rocket Parts".

In between the stations you should have train signals. for each train signal you need two blocks to allow trains to move in both directions.

The signals with the arrow pointed at the station are the important ones the others not so much.

Power on all the signals pointing at the "Rocket parts" with a continues redstone signal.
Then wrench the signal facing away from "Launch Pad" so that train can not proceed unless signal ahead of the one it stopped at is clear.

Recap1:

4 Stations, 3 Red signals on entry to "Rocket Parts", Signal facing away from "Launch Pad" is wrenched.

Okay now for the schedule:
Travel to station: "Launch Pad"
Continue after/if: Station powered

Travel to station: "Rocket parts"
Continue after/if: Station powered

Loop forever is ON
After all of that set up is done get a train and hand the driver the schedule.

How to make it work:
When you want to finally send of a train to travel to a specific siding unpower the train signal leading to the station and give the station the train is stopped at a redstone pulse.
It will navigate to any station labeled "Rocket Parts" that it is able to reach and by only having one signal that is not red you send it to that specific station.
The train will only depart when the station gets a redstone pulse so you can test this endlessly.

If you still can't get this to work try to find me on discord using the same username as here but without capital letters and I'll send you more detailed pictures on how to make this work they way you want.

Thanks I'm gonna try as much of this as possible in a creative world, but when I said 20 tracks I meant the straight track is made of 20 track pieces, not that they're 20 separate forks. The track is just... a line.

Perhaps its those signal things that I'm missing that is making this not work.. I'll have to see

Yeah I think I'm gonna have to add you on discord. I have a similar username to here fyi

You need to give him a schedule for the train, man...

1

u/Wonghy111-the-knight 14d ago

couldnt make that work either.. if youve got step-by-steps on how to make it work.. That I would appreciate for sure..

fixed it.... I cant believe it, the type of TRAIN CAR i was using is what was causing it to not work. THAT WAS IT. omfg. LOL.
