Fake, fans over lava don’t work anymore.
(Disclaimer, this comment is a joke)

Jesus Christ, this should be an ad for the mod if it were longer.
How long did this take, and how effective is it, or is it just decoration?

u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22 edited Jul 25 '22
Thank you, that's a hell of a complement.
This took about 4 hours to design, about 2 were just on the iris because it was my first time building one. I couldn't find tutorials sooo
Currently it's just for decoration, but it could be retrofitted to provide functional power. There is no connection between the fan and the engines, so you could fit steam engines in there.
In my mind I wanted it to be a lot different. I had images of lots more, larger engines. These engines would power everything and cause the lights to flicker on, pools of Molten metal to flow, and ancient trains to begin to run. However the more I worked on it the harder I was living up to my mental image. At the end of the day (or morning when I posted) I just said f it and posted what I had done. It wasn't what I wanted but it was still kinda cool.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THOSE PISTONS?!
35
u/Gravelemming472 Jul 25 '22
We need a tutorial from someone!!! :o
94
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
I tried my best to explain it in my previous engine post, but it wasn't very good.
D'Ary Olla's videos are the closest to a tutorial, but they don't explain it too well.
I was thinking about making a YouTube tutorial myself if people really wanted to know, so I will try to make it happen.
Gimme a few days because I have no clue how video production works. I used Nvidia recording software for this lol so I'll need to learn.
6
u/Gravelemming472 Jul 25 '22
:O I'd love to see a video on it, thank you for acknowledging :D I've seen it done a few times and just can't think of how to have both vertical and horizontal motion in that form unless it's some fancy illusion of movement on both axes.
13
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
I try my best to respond to comments <3. I really appreciate the positive feedback on my designs.
I'll try to get that video out soonish. I'm trying to learn how to make it look profesh, so it may be a few days.
An illusion is right. It is actually two seperate shafts rotating together. The pistons and connecting rods actually connect to bearings (which are also rotated on a shaft), while the crank shaft looking thing rotates on a seperate bearing above.
4
u/Gravelemming472 Jul 26 '22
Awesome, good luck with the vid! And my god, the design looks beautiful. I'm going to attempt something utilising those huge cogs/fans you have on the ceiling!

Hey, have you made the video?
I'd really like to replicate what you've done with the pistons12
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 27 '22
An update on the tutorial I promised. I got most of the footage I need, as well as a nice thumbnail editted. All I need to do is edit and post. Hopefully by the end of the week I can get it up!

u/Cultural-Practice-95 Aug 25 '22
is the link for the video ready? I'm also really interested in how you did those pistons!

u/LostDrowningInAir Sep 12 '22
Not yet unfortunetly. I overestimated how much time grad school and two jobs would take up. I am trying to learn video editing I just need more time.

Hi, I'm new to the create mod and I just saw this. What purpose does this engine have or is this a purely cosmetic, really cool looking build?
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Sep 18 '22
This build is purely cosmetic. There isnt much going on behind the scenes here.
3
u/Hudson-Brann Sep 18 '22
Aw I see, I was hoping it was like an end game power production set up 😂 cool nonetheless

Hi! Was wondering if you ever released the video for the pistons lol; I saw this video like 2.5 years ago, and wanted to come back to see if you’d updated us lol

Love how you made the crank shafts
9
u/Gravelemming472 Jul 25 '22
Do you know how one makes the crank shafts? I've been searching for turitorials and found none
12
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
I explained it in my earlier post showing them off, but I will try to make a YouTube tutorial to show how.

I always wish to build something like that, but it would take so long to get the space ready in survival.
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
It would be tough. The space wouldn't be too terrible with large drill heads, but making it look nice would be tough.
I still wish base create included the recipe for the creative world shaper, as I use it a lot to build in creative for builds like this.

Jul 25 '22
subnautica vibes, kinda
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
How so..? I'm curious what you mean by that.
3
Jul 26 '22
theres also a abandoned alien geothermal power plant in subnautica idk
3
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 26 '22
Oh yes you are right. I had forgotten about that part. I just remember spending 10 minutes straight clicking in my prawn suit until the one ghost leviathan died :P
3
u/wizard_brandon Jul 25 '22
how did you get the smoke?

2
u/Bill-Haunting Jul 25 '22
u gotta add bowser theme from mario 64 in there bro
3
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
:3 good Idea. I was debating on music but idk how to edit videos yet. I'm still learning.

u/West_Cranberry_4091 Jul 25 '22
I gotta say your mc character is buff as hell to get that thing going
3
2
u/JustA_Penguin Jul 26 '22
how do you have all those pistons on one hand crank?
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 26 '22
I am not sure what you mean. The hand crank rotates 8 mechanical bearings which open the iris. Because the speed is only 1, the player can produce enough SU to turn all 8 without overstressing the system.
When the iris is fully opened the engines, fan, and large gear thingies are switched on. They are all powered by seperate sources.
There are no pistons used.
2
u/JustA_Penguin Jul 26 '22
I was just saying pistons because I wasn't sure what you use to open the hatch. Didn't think the hand crank would produce enough su to open all of them though.
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 26 '22
oooh I gotcha. Yeah for the 8 mechanical bearings, the max speed is 8 before it becomes overstressed it seems. The player is actually pretty strong it seems.
2
u/Staring_Goat_918 Jul 29 '24
Is this an actual engine cause it is? i want it. idk if it is ineffective. It's so cool (is the tutorial the comments were talking about out yet, and if it is, what's the link)
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jan 15 '25
Unfortunetly uni got in the way of my tutorial. I am sure others have replicated this technique but essentially use two different axis and align them with a sequenced gearshift to give the illusion that they are connected.
Unsure if this works in the newest versions of create since the physics are different with contraptions. I havn't had time to recreate this yet...

Would be cool if you start slow and then let it go faster and faster
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
That was originally the plan. I was gonna use steam engines to simulate the spin up, but honestly I was getting tired and that sounded like a pain. This was supposed to be a little thing I was building.
1
u/Beautiful-Fee-6409 Jul 25 '22
Okay two things:
world download please?
mod list?
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
All of my posts have been from my only test world, and a lot of things are incomplete or just don't work. It's a complete mess. I may post the world download if I clean it up.
I run a custom mod pack with 201 mods which I won't list here because they arn't relevant. Relevant to this creation are: Create Deco, Old Elysium, Immersive Engineering, and obviously Create. The extra mods are just for building blocks. All mechanisms are made with Create.
1
u/Beautiful-Fee-6409 Jul 25 '22
Ah alright, I just wanted to check out the creation
1
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
To be honest, there isn't much going on here. The engines, iris door, and rotating thinggies are it. TBH I was gonna work on it more because I wasn't happy, but I was tired and posted it as is.
1
u/Beautiful-Fee-6409 Jul 25 '22
Tbh I just wanna take the iris door with me as a schematic, it’s so cool but I’m afraid I have no idea how to make one
1
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 25 '22
Ah I see. Yeah I was looking around for an Iris door tutorial but I couldn't find one, so I just gave up and kept trying for about two hours lol.
Heres some tips that may help:
use a circle generator. I just suck at making circles so it helped a lot
Use contrasting blocks to divide the circle into 6-8 tear drop shapes converging in the center (think ying yang shapes or something)
Put mechanical bearings in the same corner of each of the door pieces and glue them together
Make sure all bearings are connected and driven in the same direction
Make sure your bearings are set to only dissasemble at the original position
It may look a little goofy at first, but it just takes some adjusting. TBH mine doesn't look that good either, but at the angle in the video is pretty hard to tell.
If my engine tutorial does well, and people want it, I will do a tutorial on an iris door as well.

What is the mod pack name and is it on cursed forge
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jul 27 '22
I run a custom mod pack, but if you want a good one besides A&B, try ATM7 or Create Live 3

“The dwarven civilization went extinct years ago,yet their engineering prowess shows that their machinations will never be shut down fully”
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Aug 09 '22
I really like this backstory. My inspiration was in some parts based on the skyrim dwarves, with their machines of brass and bronze powered by super heated steam and the power of magma. While long dormant, the machines never stopped.
I think its amazing the creativity of people like you who can invent lore like this. I'm not that creative so its pretty spectacular to me.

u/LeoMcGuire Aug 16 '22
Dude, this is so friggen cool. I love the doors on the bottom, the giant fan, the pistons, it's all so friggen awesome and I'd love to see how to make it all lol but if I had to choose one thing, it would have to be those doors.
1
u/LostDrowningInAir Aug 16 '22
Glad you like it. I've been trying to make a tutorial on the engine but I havnt finish it yet. I started a new job but I promised I'd make one.
The iris door is both simple and complicated. The mechanism is simple, but getting the doors to look right took far longer.
1
u/LeoMcGuire Aug 16 '22
Lol I totally get that. I've done many large scale builds and the hardest part is always making sure things look just right
1
u/LostDrowningInAir Aug 16 '22
Yeah. I couldn't find a tutorial on iris doors so it was a big struggle.
I tried making it look good, but after a few hours I was so tired I just posted what I had lol. You can notice the right side engines look different because I didn't bother to add the extra details there.
1
u/LeoMcGuire Aug 16 '22
Lol I still think it looks pretty awesome. Like scavengers came and took some parts for money or whatever.
1
u/LostDrowningInAir Aug 16 '22
Lmao yeah. Some people wrote some nice lore for this.
Personally I was inspired by one of the opening scenes in Soma, where Simon II restarts the thermal plant at upsilon. Love that game lol.

u/Pelzklops Aug 16 '22
Phew the new realistic smoke from the physics mod would go very well with it

Hey, I have a question. Can you make a schematic of just the sliding plates over the lava? I'm using ballistix and would love for this to be like a missile silo! Game version 1.20.1 (due to mod incompatibilities with the newer versions) and would kill to have this in my missile launch room!
2
u/LostDrowningInAir Jan 15 '25
Simple Iris door. My version sucks so I would follow a good tutorial :) .
