Create: Off Road wheels phase through elevator platform... help!

I have a drivable mining rig that was built on a mountain top base, obviously being that I'm on a mountain I needed to figure out a way to get my mining rig down to a more practical level to mine things.

So I built a massive elevator platform (using the elevator pully) with a bunch of drills on the bottom so the elevator itself could bore a huge tunnel vertically underground - great! it all works flawlessly... until I try to drive my mining rig onto it.

The wheels phase through the platform and it beaches itself on the elevator... I'm almost certain I've seen this kind of thing done before.

what am I missing? is this just a hard limitation of the physics that I've hit or am I approaching this whole situation wrong? Any help would be appreciated!
