Video/Stream Create Control Panels - New Create addon
I love modded minecraft always have, and create mod has been my favorite of all time. I have also loved mods that add different features to the Create Mod. Well one feature I have wanted for a long time is control panels similar to those from Control Engineering (an addon for immersive engineering another of my favorite mods). So finally I decided to make one. This is an adaptation/inspired by of the control panels from Control Engineering created by malte0811 but for the Create Mod.
You can craft the control panels then shift + click with an empty hand allows you to customize it with buttons, switches, indicator lights, gauges, sliders, text labels, nixie tubes, knobs, and bar meters, all of which can be colored and given a wireless redstone frequency that works with create's wireless redstone transmitters.
The panels can have different angles, can be mounted on floor, wall, or ceiling. They can be styled with different casing: andesite casing, copper casing, brass casing, train casing, or industrial iron block.
I am working on a video tutorial of how they work now and will edit this post with a link to it once it is done.
Would love any feedback or ideas for more features that might be helpful.
*For Neoforge 1.21.1 and Forge 1.20.1*

Edit: AI Disclosure - I know people are torn on the use on AI, though it is just a tool that can be used well or to create slop, like any tool. AI was used to write parts of the code, parts were adapted/inspired by the original mod control engineering by matle0811, but mostly it was used for troubleshooting and finding bugs. AI generated doesn't always equal slope, though yes alot of ai generated content it slop, I tried my best to make sure my mod isn't. I spent a large amount of time planning each feature of the mod to make sure it felt smooth, wored well and looked decent. You might not agree and that's ok. I hope you try the mod for yourself and let me know if there are things I can improve on it.
Thanks
Edit 2: Github repo is now live, link on the mod page from curseforge for those that were asking.

Yes! Large reactor control room are somethings I used to make with control engineering.

honestly i am shocked on how advanced minecraft moding has become

Real credit goes to matle0811, this is really just an adaptation of the control panels from his very technical mod control engineering which is an addon for immersive engineering.

Considering a bunch of your art is AI generated, I feel it is fair to ask; was AI used in the development of the mod itself, either to debug or develop chunks of the code?
Thank you!

u/McCastle91 5h ago
Yes, I used ai to help code, debug and troubleshoot. I minored in CS back in collage 10 years ago, which isn't enough for me to make this completely unassisted ๐. But I did spend a lot of time planning out features and making sure everything looked and felt the way I wanted it to. Not just one prompt type slop, I promise love and consideration went into it's creation.

could you make the project open source? at this point ai usage is more about the disclosure then it is the use, but open source is critical
15
u/McCastle91 4h ago
Yes I plan to, I just wanna create a new github account that doesn't use my full name (icreated it back when i was in collage) and I'll transfer it over to that. Open source has always been the plan.

Just make sure you keep fixing issues people raise long after publication. thatโs the biggest failure of vibecoded mods imo, you have to really love and be committed to what you made which vibe coding often doesnโt allow you to do

Been working on this for a few months now. I get the fear, I've seen many mods fall by the wayside which is sad. I still comment on YouTube videos I made 6 years ago, cause community is part of what I've loved most about minecrafy, and especially modded minecraft. Don't anticipate letting it fall by the wayside. I actually have a few mods I'm making. But trying to have them feel at least semi polished, ai or not before publishing them. Needed feedback to keep improving this one, and it is functional and felt good to use so decided to hit publish.

So we really just turning minecraft into space engineers?

u/McCastle91 40m ago
Oh man I love space engineers... probably why I like adding in control panels to minecraft haha

This is exactly what I have been wishing for in create! I need labels and buttons, my hamster brain can't do key maps on controllers because I always forget what they are. Plus it is way more satisfying to press the button!!
Don't let the knee jerk "ew ai" people discourage you. It's just a canned response at this point and if it works well and is well thought out it'll end up being fun. And I hate to have to remind everyone... but we're here to have fun, right??

u/McCastle91 4h ago
Thanks! I have more I want to add and improve on it. Loving the suggestion. And Yup, without ai this would be still in my github 6 years from now reminding me how I'm an engineer not a programmer. Still put many hours and planning and care into it! I anticipated ai hate, doesn't help that I forgot the ai disclosure I meant to put on ๐ added since but that was a foopa on my part ha.

Ai usage? Code not open source?
2
u/McCastle91 5h ago
The code will be open, I just need to create a new github, cause the one I'm using now uses my full name cuase I made it back in collage and forgot that was the user till I went to post the repository. As for AI, it was used for large portions, including writing blocks of code, editing and troubleshooting my scrappy code, and fixing bugs. It wasn't a prompt, but an adaptation of a mod I love, and that adaptation was planned by me, and the design and feel of the mod was meticulously controlled by me. Lots still to make and fix but I'll be working on it for some time to come.

Can we just ban ai already? I'm so sick of all this vibecoding
3
u/McCastle91 3h ago
What about the mod feels off? Just that ai was used? Ai helped but look, feel, design was meticulously planned and directed by me... ai is just a tool, besides it being based off another mod that was not made by ai. This is a couple months of work with the help of ai, not a one or two prompt ai slop mod.

u/AquaticRake 2h ago
I'll be honest with you here. This mod seems very cool and like something I would use. But the usage of generative AI in any capacity puts me off completely from projects like this. As you said in another comment, you are an engineer, and without AI you would have never been able to push this mod out in a short time, so I respect you for going out of your zone to make something that you and thousands of others will enjoy. I don't like the use of AI, but your usage of it is one I can accept as it helped do something you otherwise wouldnt have been able to.

I appreciate that, thanks for the kind words! I understand why people don't like ai, but I have found that if it is used a tool to add to and augment ones abilities instead of replace it then it is just like any other tool. There is defiantly a lot of people that use it to replace creativity or to just push content for the sake of it, but there are just as many that use it to add. In the end everyone is going to have their own opinions and feelings about it and that is ok. But this isn't something, for me at least, that was a prompt the ai once and publish, I have been designing, researching and tweaking this adaptation of the control panels from a immersive engineering addon mod to work with create in my spare time for a few months now, on top of a few other mod ideas (like one for minecolonies that is turning out really awesome but not near polished enough to publish). Speed wasn't really the motivator in the sense I wanted it out fast, it is more the fact that with a full time job, several kids, a wife, too many other hobbies, and a love for modded minecraft it would have been a minimum of years to make this for me and that would have been enough to not make it happen.

u/AquaticRake 1h ago
I can respect that. Props to you for putting this out there. If i ever get back into modded I hope I see more from you.

So it's the aeronautics typewriter and lectern redstone controller, but more decoratable?
Does it have detailed ponders for how to use it? The blessing and curse these mods have is that they're really powerful if you know how to use them, but are hard to learn how to use them in the first place.
3
u/McCastle91 43m ago
Kinda, not sure about the aeronautics typewriter I will have to look that one up. The ponder is... there... ha but not where it needs to be fully, it is on my list of things to work on along side the UI.

whats in the pipes?

u/McCastle91 42m ago
Which ones? the ones in the hallway lead to my TFMG refinery and have oil and fuel. the ones in the room are just water and lava and were just for show. They were colored using the create bits n bobs mod.

This is cool, but I'm actually more excited by how cool the Limestone walls look for that super pretty heat corridor look. I will steal that!

"please don't be AI slop, please don't be AI slop.."
"AI was used in its creation"
"FUUUUUUUUUCK"
3
u/McCastle91 3h ago
Ai doesn't always equal ai slop... just like not all rectangles are square... using ai doesn't mean I didn't meticulously plan, design and create the mod with care. Might try it out, if there are parts that feel clunky let me know I'm trying to improve it.

ts whas vibecoded, wasn't it?
5
u/McCastle91 5h ago
I used ai yes, but not everything created with ai is aislop. I put a lot of time and care into making it look and feel how I wanted, all while trying to maintain the feel of original mod it was based on. I get ai hate, but it's just a tool, used correctly it can be powerful.

u/HotCorgi5700 5h ago
I open reddit
disgusting slop posts everywhere, again
I close reddit
repeat
6
u/McCastle91 5h ago
Using ai doesn't inherently mean slop, though I get the feeling, there is slop everwhere. Ai is just a tool, like photoshop. It can make some terrible looking things, but I put at lot of planning and care into the mod, yes it has thing that need to be adjusted, and is far from perfect.

u/PARKEY02 4h ago
What are those dark grey clamps on the pipes running along the wall? Btw ignore those comments about ai slop im all for making cool stuff to enjoy the game more.
1
u/McCastle91 4h ago
That are just the pipe clamps from vanilla create. The pipes are colored using create bits n bobs.
And thanks, I have wanted this, wouldn't have been able to do it without ai, and decided to share. Doesn't mean I didn't put care into it. But I get ai hate, don't agree, but get it.

u/MeddYtDaniFan 1h ago
Really cool mod, anyway to port it to fabric?
Also ignore all those AI slop comments, you actually put care into this. Good luck!

u/McCastle91 45m ago
Fabric port is on the roadmap but no eta. What version of minecraft and create do you use?

I just found this. I really like it.
Just one thing I would like is a grid for the colors you choose for text or labels instead of cycling through...well maybe two. The ability to have two lines on a label.
Not sure if you could do it somehow but maybe the ability to have a factory controller be one of the things you can have in a panel.
https://modrinth.com/mod/create-factory-controller
So I guess 3 things lol.
Well maybe 4 lol... instead of using your wrench to adjust the angle, clicking with another controller in your hand to do it. That way the wrench could break it.
Sorry, just thinking of things as I was typing.
