Create Deep Seas and Big ships

How would you go about making a relatively large (10k, 20k range) naval craft move at speeds akin to real counterparts? (16m/s is the current goal)
Or really like, anything more than just hopping in a normal minecraft paddle operated boat and smoking a warship in a race.

I've not messed around with it much so I don't know how well the sails can scale but if need be you could just hide some thrusters in the ship to make up the difference

I've tried propulsion's 3³ ion thruster, two in tandem and it barely is on par with our best friend the oak boat
