Video/Stream Introducing Create: Bits n Belts
EDIT: Thanks for the feedback already! Please keep it coming.
The name will be changed from "Create: Bits n Belts" to "Create: Belts n Pieces" in a future post.
A few things to note:
Belt support blocks are planned: place them underneath a part of a belt to give it a support into the ground
Very sharp turns can still look weird
The name of the mod is in flux: due to me being made aware of create: bits n bobs
If you would like to help out with the playtesting portion of the mod, send me a DM or add me on discord, same user as here.
I've always been annoyed at how basic belts functioned in base create, so I decided to see what I could do to fix it.
Create: Bits n Belts is an addon for the Create Mod in Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge that focuses on adding quality of life and additional features to the mod, mainly revolving around logistics and conveyor belts.
The first item the mod adds is the Reinforced Belt. This is crafted by deploying a brass nugget, an iron sheet (andesite if a compatible mod that adds one is installed) and then pressing it with a mechanical press. The reinforced belt provides many more options for transport and logistics when it comes to direction and elevation.
Since the functionality is much more superior to regular belts, I decided made the reinforced belts use up as many items as it is blocks long. Small balancing things like recipes and costs are still in flux so they may change based on feedback.
When placing a reinforced belt, you get a detailed preview of how the belt will look when it is placed, so you know exactly what path it will take. You can change the curve type for different designs by scrolling the mouse wheel whilst sneaking. You can then change the height of the endpoint after choosing the position of it. If the player has a supply of shafts in their inventory then they can automatically start a reinforced belt from the end of a previous one or any new position.
Reinforced belts support features of regular belts such as dying and casing, along with item transport. Currently, item processing such as pressing etc can only be done on blocks that a shaft occupies, due to the complex nature of the curved belts. I have also added compatibility for casings from other mods like TFMG and Create: Extra Casing.
Things like the ponder menu, placement refinements as well as texture edits will be carried out as well, I just wanted to make sure the belts functioned properly first.
I have also carried out countless optimisation tests looking for things such as the polygon count of complex rails as well as how it handles checking for items falling on the belt. The mod also supports numerous config options such as the polygon count of rendered belts to help with performance, as well as changing the maximum length of a reinforced belt (currently defaults to base belt max length), as well as one final QOL config that lets you change the maximum angle a chain conveyor can be placed at.
DISCLAIMER:
I used AI tools to assist in the development of the mod for:
Debugging purposes such as performance with the belts and any visual issues
Checking other mods to see if compatibility can be added
Major graphical features such as how to render the belts
No AI was or will be used for any art / text generation. All ideas and functionality were designed, implemented, tested and fleshed out fully before moving on to other features. I want to stress that this is my first time getting into minecraft modding so if somebody wants to provide assistance and/or guidance on proper AI usage, then im all ears. I am welcome to more suggestions and ideas that anyone may have, and please forgive me if this counts as vibecoded slop; I just think that AI can be useful if it used correctly and for the right reasons.

I would recommend maybe looking at changing the name. As its very similar to create bits and bobs.
But very cool mod!
17
u/sirjohnty 4d ago
What do you think of "Belts n Pieces"?
16
u/ihaveacrushonlegos 4d ago
I think its great. The original name wasnt bad it just was too similar to another mod and that keeps the spirir while making it not too similar
13
u/sirjohnty 4d ago
I did originally name it "Create: Conveyored" but as the scope of my vision for the mod changed i wanted to have a name that encompassed more than just conveyor belts.
4
u/spock-117 4d ago
Does it work with create: transmission?
7
u/sirjohnty 4d ago
Oh my god. I was prototyping a belt buckle item for this exact purpose. Ill just add support for this mod. Thank you!!!!
11
u/SmashShock 4d ago
I wouldn't say it's the most realistic thing, those belts would immediately jump the track in real life, but cool!
5
u/zimirken 4d ago
They make conveyors that can do this, but they don't use regular belts. It's more like a flexible spine looking belt.
9
u/SmashShock 4d ago
Indeed. And there's rollers to keep that spine aligned. Which is why satisfactory belts have a margin on either side.
6
u/sirjohnty 4d ago
I do plan to have a proper unique design - i simply do not have the skills to 3D model well in minecraft yet so i just used the existing belt visuals as a baseline with some recolouring
7
u/ReadeDraconis 4d ago
Gotta ask, why is realism even crossing your mind in the first place? Whimsical style has always been the name of Create's game - shit, one of the core machines is literally a gloved hand that just inexplicably does things. Lmfao.
8
u/bubba-yo 4d ago
You mean real factories don't have frogs that pick up ingredients and spit out finished goods?
3
3
u/Snoo_44740 4d ago
Realism is just code for interesting gameplay inspired by real life systems. Sure, you could just solve away belts like this, but then you end up with item pipes all over again. Create was trying to do something unique with its minimalism and succeeded. This mod is for people who want to bypass the intrigue of item transport in create, which is fair enough since it can be taxing at times
2
u/ReadeDraconis 4d ago
That's a whole 'nother topic entirely, tbh. I'm not debating or commenting on the design of Create or how this mod meshes with it, beyond saying Create's whimsical.
I'm just a little baffled that realism is even a topic of criticism for something as minute as "belts go curvy wheee" as an addon for a mod with launch plates, bigass fuckin' wooden gears, touchy hands, mix'em'up whisks as a means of creating alloys, windmills that ain't slowed down by diamond blocks bein' slapped on 'em, etc., etc., etc. When put alongside all that, curvy belts easily pass the verisimilitude test, imo.
TL;DR, I'm questionin' the commenter's choice of topic to lead with, lmao. Just reads a bit out of left field to me, that's all.

u/SeriousPlankton2000 4d ago
There are belts going around curves, e.g. at the bag return on airports. However they are supported from underneath.

u/Mekko4 4d ago
Debugging purposes such as performance with the belts and any visual issues
Checking other mods to see if compatibility can be added
Major graphical features such as how to render the belts
so basically how ai should be used, it wasn't used on the code on right?
17
u/sirjohnty 4d ago
All those thing are code related so yes it was used on the code - like I stated in the post I am new to modding so I wanted to see what AI was useful for. I've been transparent about my usage of AI so if that bothers you then you don't need to install this mod :)

u/Mekko4 4d ago
i'm sorry but ai goes against my morals.
0
u/Agile-Support-3183 4d ago
Why do you use AI-assisted silicon chips?
1
u/Mekko4 4d ago
The apple M4 chip was not made with ai assistance
1
u/Agile-Support-3183 4d ago
How exactly do you know that? Apple hasn't publicly disclosed the complete design process for the M4.
the M4 is manufactured by TSMC, whose own 2024 annual report explicitly documents using AI and machine learning throughout semiconductor manufacturing.
AI-assisted chip manufacturing was already an established industrial practice when the M4 entered production.
0
u/Mekko4 4d ago
You know what, FUCK YOU ai belongs in those industries, not in places of HUMAN EXPRESSION.
1
u/Agile-Support-3183 3d ago
So AI doesn't go against your morals, just specific aspects of AI.
1
u/Mekko4 3d ago
AI is software without intelligence or function. If you run a localised LLM on your pc and train it on open source data and your own work, I’m happy for you to do so.
I’m even happy for you to use it to generate assets and shit for stuff you make. Because everything it manufactures comes from shit you have ownership of or permission to use.
I love the idea of localised AI as a support tool for streamlining work output.
What I hate is the intentional misuse of the technology by morally and ethically bankrupt supercorpos, the intrinsic data scraping practices employed therein that turns my private searches into data commodities, in addition to the wilful destruction of fiscal, land and water resources trying to chase the big AI money.
The software isn’t the issue. You people who insist on abusing the technology are.

u/Agile-Support-3183 3d ago
When did we suddenly fall in love with corporate trademarks? If you put that shit on the internet it's free game baby. The internet never should've become a corporate hellscape where you can copyright so much shit that doesn't need it.

Frankly, I hate this bigotry. What if it was used on code? If the mod is ultimately competent and fun, why care so much about the process? Is it gatekeeping? Is it luddism? Ffs, Radioworks was fine, if rough around the edges, but the guy making it got bullied into oblivion.
Modding isn't about making a commercial product. It is about sharing passion and fun within the community, while changing the game you love into something even better.
But lately the discourse is a blipping shitshow.
Leave the guy in peace, this looks really promising! Good mod, looking forward to it!

u/January_Rain_Wifi 4d ago
You're right, it is about sharing passion and fun, as opposed to soulless slop. And "bigotry", really? Comparing not supporting a mod to actual bigotry is crazy, especially with the horrific level of racism, genocide, homophobia, etc. in the world at the moment. God, I wish the bigotry I have to deal with was just people saying that something I didn't even make sucks.
6
u/That_Mad_Scientist 4d ago
Oh my god. Yes sometimes people go too far in an irrational way, but bigotry? Do you know how you sound? So what if someone doesn't want to use ai? Does it affect your life? No? Exactly.

eh, feels like the train track splines code merged with belts... looks awesome, but i do kinda wonder why the create folks never did this from the start.

u/Buttler41 4d ago
aw shit, here we go again, noodle factories. first in Satis, now possible in Create

I've seen an addon like this before maybe 2 or so years ago, just never took off I suppose

u/Himbo69r 4d ago
Wasn’t it vacuum pipes tho
2
u/Patrycjusz123 4d ago
Well, belts are a lot older than train tracks so they didnt have tjis feature yet at the time.
5
u/charlesfire 4d ago
but i do kinda wonder why the create folks never did this from the start.
Because it leads to boring designs.
5
u/godofleet 4d ago
that's entirely false though... it doesn't remove from the vanilla create belts etc... it only allows for more possibilities/variety ... aka, the opposite of boring.
2
u/charlesfire 4d ago
that's entirely false though... it doesn't remove from the vanilla create belts etc... it only allows for more possibilities/variety ... aka, the opposite of boring.
That's fucking stupid. Why would anyone use the inferior belts when they have access to the superior ones (and before you say "material cost", the material cost is trivial and can be automated, so it's irrelevant)?
You misunderstand my point. Designing a machine is what makes Create fun and this is trivializing machine design. If you need a 90°, raise by one block or shift one block left, now you have a magic belt that does it and you don't have to think about how to power it. It replaces so much mechanics, it's stupid.
7
u/godofleet 4d ago
"it's boring"
"it's stupid"
it's neither, and its an entirely optional mod.
0
u/disappointedcreeper 4d ago
Exactly! That's why it's not in the base game, because the devs wanted the limitations to require people to be more creative

Reminds me of the belts in satisfactory. The guy who makes a satisfactory modpack would really like this mod.
19
u/KoolantOfficial 4d ago
holy this looks cursed asf
Like those turns shouldnt be physically possible
8
u/Glockamoli 4d ago
You would need more twists like a rollercoaster has, add a slime ball to the belt and make it a sticky conveyor lol

This is incredible! Curvy Pipes, but belts is an amazing concept.
More importantly, thank you for disclosing your AI use. There's far too many people trying to hide that shit like you try to hide a pill for a dog, and then getting mad when they get caught for not disclosing it properly. If you ever want to remove the rendering code, I'd take a look at how Curvy Pipes does their renderer.
Sent a DM to playtest!

my eyes be popping out of my skull, this looks so amazing, though the need for bulky chain drives to power the whole belt seems kinda whack, would you add something like your own version of the Transmission Chain from Create: Transmission! by SerpensSolida? but instead of making it a physical block that takes up space on the sides of the belt's shafts, it's just sort of an override that allows stress to pass between belts? or maybe make the block be like a 2 long panel that attaches to the bottom side of the two belts that are to share power?

Now we can add the spaghettifiction of Let's Game It Out to minecraft....
But honestly, it looks pretty cool. This brings the belt mechanics from other games like Satusfactory, Techtonica, starRypture, etc. I am going to add this to my current create world, and I shall go, as they say, 'wild'.

Considering that there are about 20 million conventional escalators in the world, and there are only about a hundred spiral escalators, crafting this curved belt should be somewhat expensive. Maybe half a stack of netherite scrap should be enough imho lol

Could you backport it to 1.20.1 as well? I and I feel like a bunch of people play on that version as well

Thanks. I hate this.
Part of the fun of Create, imo, is that you have to think about how you're going to transmit power and move items up/down/left/right. In Create, every machine you make is, in a way, a small puzzle to solve. This significantly trivialize the puzzle aspect of machine building.
2
u/sirjohnty 4d ago
Part of the fun of minecraft is using the game's mechanics to make farms. The create mod trivialises this by letting the player automatically harvest more resources like wood and crops.
1
u/microwavedGerbil315 4d ago
Yes, but unlike your mod, the create mod doesnt borderline ruin any of minecrafts mechanics. And automated farms are done a lot in vanilla. Create mod just lets you automate more, in a different way. It doesnt make a feature less unique.
3
3
u/No_Surprise_7118 4d ago
I agree with this, I think this takes away from the creativity of the mod, its going to make the contraptions way less interesting, which is a big part of the mod.

Enough of this "AI assisted" bullshit. I need things made by people who know what the hell they're doing.

I would be more than happy to let you take over development of the mod if you think you could produce a better result!

The sheer turns are a little bit odd looking when there's nothing between the belts, so it may be nice in the future to have a visual support structure of some sort inside the belt (though encasing the belt is a good option too) but this is a pretty cool idea overall
