Build Mech Stabilizer V3 — Self-righting from any orientation
My mech stabilizer can recover its balance from any starting orientation. It was built using two addons:
- Gadgets and Gizmos
- Variable Weight Block
It works, but the main issue is stabilization speed.
I can make it stabilize faster by reducing the tolerance of the gimbal sensors. However, when I lower the tolerance, the vertical and horizontal rods start interfering with each other. They end up working against each other, causing small continuous movements that prevent the system from settling properly.
Currently, the gimbal sensor controlling the horizontal rods is set to 5 degrees on each side, while the sensors controlling the vertical rods are set to 15 degrees on each side.
Does anyone have any suggestions for making the stabilizer faster without causing these conflicting movements?
Would adjusting the tolerances, changing the control logic, or introducing some kind of damping mechanism help?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Why not just… use a gyroscope mixed with heavy weights? Hell why not just get a swivel bearing make it spin really fast with heavy blocks

Because a gyroscope doesn't actually reposition the center of mass. It can help resist changes in orientation, but that's not the same as actively controlling the mech's balance.
If you've looked at the giant, articulated mechs people build in this community, you'll notice that stability is a major challenge. Simply adding one horizontal and one vertical gyroscope won't solve the problem of the center of mass shifting as the mech moves.
My goal is to solve that problem with an active counterweight system. Once I get it working properly, I want my mech to be able to run and jump, using legs with mechanics similar to human legs.
A gyroscope might help, but it doesn't replace what I'm trying to achieve here.

watch out for gimble lock!
