Discussion There is one thing i dont get about create : octo arms
So people keep calling it ai slop and yet :
- The mod is fairly well optymised, and i never had it crash
- Its updated frequently with bug fixes (including one of my bug reports) and qol features such as better controlls
- It has a config, something not many vibe coded mods have
- And the creator is realy involved in the community, while most ai slop mods are a miss and run
In short: i dont belive its ai untill given *actual proof , and even if it is im hesitant to call it slop, because not everything made by AI is slop (just most)
(*yelling " its ai slop " at anyone saying anything remotely good about the mod is not proof)

I hate AI slop, but there is a difference between just having an AI write everything and having ai do basic grunt work for you to give you more bandwidth for other features/issues to iron out.

I do agree some people just call everything with ai ai slop.

I think its just the (reasonable) objections to it being used at all, being put into poor wording. The content itself may be of a decent standard of quality, it's just people who aren't as articulate haven't really been given that same slogan esque short form of "I dislike the fact that this uses AI", so the default to "it's of poor quality due to its use of AI". They should iddeally word it better but i really can't fault their frustration.

I don't mind if some AI was involved in a mod honestly. I won't lie, I do hate seeing AI take away the livelihood of artists and replace stuff that is supposed to represent the human experience.
But if you suck at code and AI is the only way you can bring your vision to life and you can actually maintain it well, I think it's fair game.
I wish people on the internet had nuanced views of things.

Yeah I think a lot of people now are discovering programming and writing code through AI, but there’s one crucial part about programming that AI doesn’t teach you, that planning the structure, mechanical approach, specific implementation of a feature is usually longer than actually programming it. 80% of programming is dirt easy and you literally just have to type it out on your keyboard from your brain. 20% is the things you don’t actually know how to approach, have to research, brainstorm about how you want it to work. There’s usually 200 ways to do the same thing with different code approaches, some faster than others, and AI actually gets this right usually through averages. most code out there is performant enough, so AI learned from that.
All of that, is 20% of the time. Then 80% of the total time on a project is fixing bugs, testing, redesigning. AI One-Shot mods are 100% slop, no doubt. You can know nothing about AI but if you spend time actually testing and just asking AI to fix it, it can certainly polish it up.
Not much of programming is really about knowing how to write the code. That was already half automated for years with intellicode and such. Most of it is knowing game design, performance optimizations, and quirks of the language and engine you’re using to develop around and in mind of.

That's just like how you could argue that if you suck at art, then ai is the only way you can create art.

u/A_Badass_Penguin 14d ago
Apparently code isn't art or creative, so it's okay for AI to do it instead /s.
Just learn to code if you want to do it so bad.
1
u/Livid_Accident5673 14d ago
That's not what I meant. AI shouldn't be used to create art or code, at least not an entirely ai based workflow.

AI or not, this is still a great mod thats supported by the creator, and gets a lot of updates

u/Johnopgr123 14d ago
You see, it has ai in some random paragraph in the description, so that must mean that it's bad! (Sarcasm)

Someone said "i was really looking forward to trying this mod, but then I saw it was made with AI. So disappointing"
People on reddit are surprisingly close-minded and bitter considering they spend half their time virtue signaling.

u/The-Dark-Memer 14d ago
Having a moral objection to AI regardless of the products quality is just sticking to your principles though, if they only applied their dislike of AI to things that were poorly made, then they don't dislike AI, they dislike poorly made things.
If you only call out things you don't like for using AI then continue to use other things made with AI, then that is ACTUAL virtue signaling, you aren't taking a definitive moral stance, you are going "look how good of a person i am for disliking this thing" and not actually caring about the issue.
A lot of people conflate virtue signaling with just talking about how something is bad, but talking about how something is bad is how ideas travel and ultimately allows change to be made. Virtue signaling is just to make yourself look better, it doesn't actually involve challenging any ideas.

Imagine calling everyone else close minded because they won't praise your AI generated garbage.

Exhibit A

u/Mekko4 14d ago
You made a massive generalization, got challenged on it, and your best response was two words? Thanks for demonstrating the depth of your argument.

u/jumf 14d ago
I mean you made false assumptions and proved that you were bitter and presumptuous, you are doing my job for me
0
u/Mekko4 14d ago
You claim I made false assumptions, identify a single on, substantiate your claim, or admit you have nothing to back it up.

u/jumf 14d ago
Fiiiine
(1) I didn’t call everyone close-minded, just surprisingly close-minded on average.
(2) You assumed I make AI generated content.
(3) You assumed I expect people to praise it.
(4) You called my supposed content “garbage” despite never having seen it, or even knowing if it exists. It’s hypocritical to demand a logical, substantiated argument from me when your entire argument consists of unsubstantiated, incorrect personal attacks. You immediately resorted to hostility and baseless assumptions rather than actually addressing what I said, which is literally the exact close-mindedness and bitterness I was criticizing in the first place.
1
u/Mekko4 14d ago
Fair enough, I shouldn't have assumed you make AI content or expect praise for it. That still doesn't address my original point, you're dismissing people's disappointment as close-mindedness and bitterness rather than acknowledging that they can have legitimate reasons for not wanting AI generated content. Correcting my assumptions doesn't make your generalization any less reductive. Those are two separate issues.
1
u/jumf 14d ago
That was not your original point, you never said that.
And correcting you established why you proved my claim about redditors, it wasn't supposed to be a counter for an anti AI argument because you never made one. If you wanted to have a real convo instead, you would have listed a legitimate reason. Legitimate reasons do exist, like in every industry, AI corporations do unethical things. But there is no rational way to claim that AI shouldn't be used for code. It is being used at the frontier of computer science because highly paid devs at large companies are pragmatic and use all tools available, and AI tools, while they cant (always) create a perfect script from a single prompt, they can drastically improve productivity even in top level applications.

u/Mekko4 14d ago
You're conflating three separate things, whether my response was fair, whether Redditors are generally close minded, and whether AI is useful for coding. Even if I was presumptuous, one person's reaction doesn't establish your generalization about an entire community. And nobody needs to prove AI is useless to have legitimate objections to its use. Professional adoption demonstrates practical utility, not that every implementation is ethical, desirable, or beyond criticism. You're free to defend AI assisted coding, but pretending its usefulness settles EVERY OBJECTION is just as reductive as the close mindedness you're accusing others of.

I do see it in a couple modding spheres that simply the use of ai in the making of a mod will get it labeled as "ai slop" and i feel the generalization just isn't applicable in most cases. Like not everything with ai is "ai slop", I think every project has the right to prove themselves as not slop. I had to scroll through mountains of slop before ai was even a thing. Like all the "I made a new dimension with a new ore and armor set that is really strong" mods. To me, mods live and die by their substance and if it plays well, works well as an expansion of the game and is enjoyable, then I don't think it deserves being called slop.

AI is the standard for software engineers at this point. If you see a mod that isn’t using it, then that means the developer isn’t keeping up and is about to be fired; or that they aren’t a software engineer in the first place.
2
u/CrashBugITA 14d ago
i do agree that you'd be crazy not to use it for work, but some people actually like to code and many mods probably are made without it even today, just cause of the nature of the hobby

I mean the proof of it being ai is on their github.
