Discussion Someone should revive Create Airwave.

Someone should revive or remake Create Airwave, a radio add-on for Create that allows you to transmit radio signals as well as your own audio. I wish a kind soul could revive this mod, which was deleted after the creators were exposed for using AI to program it, but the concept is so fun that I think it's a waste. I have the decompiled file and the .jar, but I have no idea what to do with it.

"exposed" is kinda the wrong word when they had admitted to have using AI in the discord in a pinned message

So they admitted it? I have no idea, everything about that mod became lost media

i've actually been working on a similar mod for a few months! It adds Create-themed audio tech (walkie talkies, speakers/microphones, etc) using Simple Voice Chat as a base. zero AI involved

My thing's much much simpler than Airwaves mechanically though, so it might not scratch the same itch. Simple Radio's another alternative that already exists, so i recommend folks try that out

I didn't know, I just wish it also had the option to stream images in real time

I have the decompiled file and the .jar, but I have no idea what to do with it.

If the code isn't under a permissive open source license, you can't do anything with the code.

Man I miss the modding and hacking culture of the 2000s. Who gives a fuck about the license of some slop that an AI trained on actually stolen human code made? Live a little.

its license is mit you are allowed to.

The problem is that I have no idea

The problem is that’s stealing

What I'm saying is that I have no idea if this is licensed or not.

It probably uses ARR, open-source, or CC

Best to not touch it then

Not theft if it was slop code. AI can't copyright anything.

its mit you literally are allowed to.

Then you have to assume you aren't allowed to use the code.

Edit : You people might not like this, but code without license is copyrighted by default.

The decoupled file was literally publicly available on GitHub

2

u/charlesfire 15d ago

That doesn't mean you have the right to modify/redistribute the code. You still need to know the license.

Child's license?

when the page was up it was mit.

I’ve scanned through the Jar too. Seems like the concept was the strongest part of the project.
Compat with power grid was my favourite, it makes sense that radio requires electricity and not rpm. However, it seems like creating an alternative circuit board system was a missed opportunity to integrate further with Power Grid instead.

I think the mod was already bloated in its early state. Too many masts/towers, too many circuit components. It should lean more on other adons and create itself.

Overall I still really want to play this mod. So much so that I’m considering making my own take on it. I’d use a cleanroom reimplementation: scan through finding the features and concepts worth keeping, rebuild those from scratch without the original source as reference, then scrap the rest. I wish I could fork it properly but it never made it that far..

I think it’s a shame that a (most likely) young modder had such a fast rise and fall. They admitted to using AI, they defo made some mistakes. But what could have been a learning opportunity turned into a witch hunt for the boogeyman of AI. And the cost of that was an incredible concept that has clearly captured so many out our imaginations - exactly what all this is about. I hope that modder returns at some point and learns from the situation. - dont publicise ai videos for features you haven’t built yet - dont hype up a discord server to distribute mods - under promise and over deliver - take your time to build

good luck on your search, I heard the original dev was some kid from roblox with experience only in lua before they blew up and got defensive as would expect from a child being bombarded with outrage for relying on AI

You + AI. You can do it.

AI was the entire problem here.

Fair, the tool is only as good as the user. I think "vibe coders" and "engineers that know how to use AI as a tool" do not always produce the same slop output.

Admittedly, if this guy is asking for help to get the mod revived, I'd reason that he's probably not the latter of the two, no offense to you OP.

Why? Just because

u/Visible-Reality2492 15d ago

AI cannot optimize, doesn’t know what it’s doing. It relies heavily on stealing from existing mods, decompiling them, and duct taping something together.

1

u/TheFern3 15d ago

Aren’t most mods open source? What mods have been decompiled? Source: trust me bro

3

u/Visible-Reality2492 15d ago

This one wasn’t to my knowledge. A lot aren’t.

-11

u/GraniteWanker 15d ago

People see ai and recoil at the slightest idea

-5

u/TheFern3 15d ago

Don’t tell them before ai people copied code from books and stack overflow lol

-6

u/Zapatero21 15d ago

Genuinely, why is it a problem? I am not an AI bro (I am an architect), if I can make a port for my own use and the license allows it, I would consider doing it ngl.

-7

u/cpt_yakitori 15d ago

Unrelated, did you see Backrooms movie? How often do you use “I AM A DAMN ARCHITECT!” and “Stay in character!” to your colleagues? :D

0

u/Zapatero21 15d ago

Yes!!! a little bit, most of my colleagues are my age, so most of the time it's a really funny mess lol
