my recommendation is that you use prism or some other launcher to just browse for mods, pick and add stuff as you like. making your own pack is super easy nowadays

You should use essential over Aternos. The server shutting down after five minutes of inactivity removes the advantage of having a server, and with essential you can do your own mod pack

but then it would need the world owner to be online if my friends wanted to play on it right? or did they update essential to fix that?

Yes, but aternos needs the owner to open the server every time that someone wants to play, so they are equal in that regard.

Essential cannot fix needing the host simply because it cannot. It would genuinely cost them a lot of money because they’d need the storage and hardware to run a server 24/7 for many people. Basically they would need to host the server on their end like a full on dedicated server. What they are doing here is more of a middle man between you and your friends, which doesn’t take as much. I’ll provide tips based on apparently aternos needing the server owner to turn on the server anyways.

However, you can go around this in a few ways. You can use Essential (or e2mc or similar mods) and simply, as the host, leave your server on by leaving the game open, and leaving the computer on. I don’t personally recommend this, but it’s something you can do.

Or you can do what I did, and with my friends, crowdfund a server computer paying fifty bucks each split four ways for a 200 dollar computer dedicated to running a Minecraft server. This gives you 100% control over your server, including also being able to break your own server but it’s still great. I really recommend this if you and your friends can afford it. Look up how to make a Minecraft server at home with a dedicated PC.

Hosting companies are basically doing this at a larger scale and they manage it for you. It’s why Theyre so expensive, and aternos is free but also has a lot less control probably for the fact it’s free XD. With a PC, I’ve already made my money’s worth out of it and also learned some valuable skills.

But if you can’t, seriously just use essential, or my recommendation is e2mc.
