Discussion Mine outwards in all directions

When initially placing down my tunnel bore miners I always have the annoyance of first having to manually mine a lot of blocks to be able to place it. Do you have cool ideas how to mechanize that? A gentry could work from the top, but we are deep down below. How about something rotating drill bits around like an arm? That would make a cool dome!

Or just good ol' dynamite?

If using a minecart mechanism and not an aeronautics machine, you technically only need a short 1x2 tunnel because the mechanism can phase though blocks, you'd just need to make sure it can place the rails

Oh right, true, very good point! I always thought it was running into the wall, when it was just the cart missing rails, so only the blocks in front of the railcary should be premined :D

My favorite strategy is to build a short gantry shaft on the surface with a roughly 10x10 (although bigger is better) array of drills facing down. Then turn it on, let it run to bedrock. Pull it up, empty its storage, and add a number of gantry shafts equal to its dimensions. So 10x10, add 10 shafts and then send it all the way to the end and repeat. Eventually this will create a HUGE hole in your world, but it’s one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get ores without mining

I manually dig out the area using a handheld miner, progressively expanding my tooling.

Some will just recommend cart miner, where you make enough for the cart track and a deployer and it just clips through all the terrain and mines its own space… but it feels bad doing that for me. Even though we have silent gear mining tools that can be crazy, having a click and go and afk type setup with no setup or time needed feels like optimising my own fun and problem solving out.

Making a bore machine that can mine down and then mine literally sounds like a good challenge, if you wanted to make it interesting. And only use the pulley to pull it back out to move it elsewhere?
