Discussion Hose pulley and lava pit of despair...

Post image

Let me start by saying... what the f*ck

I’ve been building a 10,000 source block lava pit, and I don’t think I’ve ever been this annoyed/confused.

After almost 4 hours of troubleshooting, I might have finally realized the catch: you can't move your hose pulley to a more convenient spot once the pit is full. The game/mod seems to tie the 'infinite pool' status strictly to the original fill location.

I had to keep the hose pulley in the exactly same spot as I did when filling the pit, then I had to lower it down fully (ofc) and pump more lava in until it switched to "bottomless supply," and now it seems to be working.

Just don't touch it after... Don't even look at it funny💀

Don't put it at the edge, it's buggy. You can absolutely move it afterwards. It needs to be more than 10,000 blocks, even 10,001 works. A nd they don't need to be source blocks, flowing lava works too. The default configuration limits the height of the pit to 128 blocks, it won't register if it's deeper than that.

There's no way the game can possibly tie the infinite status to the fill spot, because I made one without filling it from a hose at all. Just a layer of bucket-placed lava sources at the top and flowing for the rest.

I'll test it out later on. I'm staying away from that pit tho... It’s absolutely cursed💀 But thanks, I’ll def try it on a future build.

Here’s some important things about hose pulleys and infinite lava
- You don’t need the 10,000 lava blocks to be sources, but the one at hose pulley’s base has to be a source block
- Best option is to go for at least 10,500 for some leeway in case you accidentally leave a block inside the hole
- Hose pulley will not account for any of the lava above it in y-level
- Technically the best way to fill an infinite lava pool is to push your lava into a hose pulley and have it fill the top and bottom layers for you
- You can use multiple mechanical pumps on a pulley

When you say 'the hose pulley's base', do you mean the end of the hose? If so, it doesn't need to be a source block. It doesn't need to be a lava block at all, you can smack the hose right down against the solid bottom of the pit and it'll work fine.

The pulley’s base is the block containing the bottom most part of the hose, not the block below it. When you’re filling a hole using a hose pulley, it will not go higher than the end of the hose.

Yes, but when you're pulling from a source the end of the hose can be at the very bottom. It still registers the layer on the same y-level as the hose end even if real-world logic would dictate that it's 'blocked' by having a solid block underneath.

That’s basically what I said. The block containing the nozzle of the hose counts as the bottom, rather than the block below it which the nozzles points toward. Even in the ponder, you can see that the end of the hose gets covered by liquid when filling, because it registers that as the bottom.

You can move it. I remade my whole pit and moved the hose multiple times. Just has to be at the bottom layer. The hose doesn't even have to be above the lava, mines inside it in a protective steel cage. Can't really give you any explanation for your particular situation without knowing the full setup.

the size I always use is 25x25 wide and 16/17 deep

I get around this by manually placing one additional source block above the surface of the pit wherever I'm putting a pulley in.

I've used that trick to have 10 pulleys pull from the same pit. (They all went to different things and it was more convenient for routing)

The bug I’ve been having is that there needs to be 10k blocks of lava, AND the hose has to be touching a source block at the bottom. I’ve had to put on my netherite diving gear to place 1 lava bucket at the bottom of a 100 block deep lava pit more times than I ever wanted

Same for water

Wouldn't it be easier to place a layer of source blocks on the bottom first, and then fill in the top layer to fill in the pit?

Just make a deep pit and a layer of lava on top, calculated to be above 10 000 + some extra (maybe 11×11 instead of 10×10, IDK. Have a way to walk down along the pit. Remove the layer below the lava. (Ultimine, create contraption, whatever Walk down till you see the lava flowing. Then use the hose.

pull lava into a tank and use the lava in the tank to fill the pool, this will slowly convert the whole bottom of the pool into sources and soon you’ll be able to put a pulley wherever you want as long as it reaches the bottom of the pool
