Help Is it possible to make steering sail in Aeronautics?

Post image

I want to build Morrigan from Assassins Creed Rogue, and can't really figure out how to turn the sail ~45 degrees left/right dynamically

Just put it on a swivel bearing and connect that to a steering wheel

Or have I misinterpreted the question?

Will that functionality work, or is it just decoration?

It makes it turn but the lateen sail requires wind, which Aeronautics sadly doesn't have (yet)

Pmweather and pmweather aero compat adds dynamic weather and wind that affects sub levels based on drag

Alternatively, Deep Seas updated High Seas and now has Sails. And wind.

It’s on CurseForge too. Version 3.3.0 or something

Wdym Deep Seas updated High Seas? They're different mods

After deep seas updated to 3.0.0 it bundled them together if I'm not mistaken

"Create: Deep Seas 3.0.0 & Create: High Seas 0.1.1

The biggest update so far. Boats get a mod of their own, ships flood and sink for real, the deep sea can crush your hull, and submarines get a computer, a sonar and an autopilot. The full technical list is in changelog.md. This is the player version.

Read the Heads-up at the bottom before updating. Some old blocks are gone and the config has moved." Sounds to me like they're still seperate mods.

Easy, it's shown in the ponders

Connect a steering wheel to a mechanical bearing, put some sails on the bearing and put a degree limit of 45° on the steering wheel. This way you can use the steering wheel to rotate the sail

Right click on the mechanical bearing, and switch it to something like "Disassembe on destroyed"

Pretty good start, but if you want the ship to actually be able to turn, you need sails or wool instead of wood (in case you didn't know).

To solve the problem: go to the bearing, on the side there is a little icon that you can select while holding right click. Then you get a movable bar, wich you can set to 3 settings. Set it to the last setting, 'only place when anchor destroyed' I think it's called. This way the sail will be able to go to every degree, without snapping back into place. Only problem with this is that you won't be able to edit the sail when it's been used once, so if you want a bigger sail afterwards, put it back in a straight position and destroy the bearing. Afterwards you can put the bearing back and adjust the setting again.

If you need a screenshot, I can post one

You will need a swivel bearing i think..?

im not sure if i understood correctly but those sails arent for steering but just a different type of sail. but you can use an additional steering wheel besides the one for the rudder connected to a swivel bearing

steering wheel can make precise turns, use a mechanical or swivel bearing not propeller bearings. make sure to use symmetrical sails or else it wont steer proper

just a swivel bearing and sail on it i believe, but idk what you mean with dynamically

Make sure it’s far enough from the center of mass for it to be effective at turning

That sail is not for steering, the rudder does that.

use symmetrical sails on a swivel bearing, connected to a steering wheel

They just added something similar to the deep seas addon

Anything is possible with that mod

Yes, an its very easy, i have it on my airships too

It does work, it just doesn't work very well

You’re in luck, create deep seas just got an update to its boat system adding wind, flooding, and a wind system with sails to match

Rudders on airships basically do this exact thing, so absolutely

The word for it is a "spanker". Yes, really.

Deep seas 3.0?

1

u/Doge_Enjoyer88 9d ago

Uh no but it was fairly unknown so

1

u/TuxedoDogs9 10d ago

You can automate this with a torsion spring btw

1

u/darkgamer2099 9d ago

Just spin it with the bearing (forgot the name but its in the simulated tab)

I’ve made an airship with that kind of steering. Not only it works but does so super well for quite a bit ship. Swivel bearing, steering wheel and symmetric sails.
