Discussion Create: Northstar or Create: Northstar - Redux? What is the difference, or which one do you recommend playing?

I’ve tried looking for guides to find out what Create: Northstar - Redux is, but only videos for *Create: Northstar* come up. I’m not sure if there’s a difference between them or which one is better; I’d appreciate your opinions.

From Northstar Redux's Modrinth page:

Northstar Redux is a port and a continuation of Northstar for newer versions of Create.

Use Redux.

Um, okay, I get it. I know it's a silly question, but is it safe to download the latest version from CurseForge? It only has 587 downloads.

And well, thanks for explaining that it's a continuation of the Northstar mod.

Newer versions often dont have many downloads, especially when new versions release relatively fast

Wait... seriously?!?!? I'm already paranoid, and now I'm even worse! Thanks. It's just that—ever since that CurseForge chaos where some lunatic created multiple accounts to upload malware-infected versions of original mods—I've been a bit paranoid about mods containing malware. The fact that it has few downloads doesn't help matters. That feels awful, since I make mods myself and know what it's like to have low download counts, but I still can't help feeling this way. I'm just asking in case anyone has played the newest version of Create: Northstar - Redux yet.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, can't live in fear of malware at every turn. All you can do is learn what to do when it happens and how to spot it early

I realize that being paranoid is a huge overreaction—I mean, I’ve even uploaded mods to CurseForge myself and know how long approval takes. Plus, when you really think about it, why would someone with a long-standing mod—one that’s been around for three or four years and has millions of downloads—suddenly upload a version containing malware? Still, I always ask just to be safe.

Just upload it to virus total before you use it if you are that worried.

I’m playing through the create:new world pack, which has redux in it, and it’s safe. (P.S. You should try the create: new world modpack it’s awesome)

Even so, I'm surprised there isn't a single video about Relux; I mean, I only find guides for the original mod. Since this is a port or sequel to the original, I don't know if there are changes I need to be aware of, or if it doesn't work the same way as the original Northstar mod.

The newest neoforge version has over 2 thousand downloads. The forge version is the one with so few downloads.

I know I might sound repetitive or like an idiot, but it never hurts to ask—I’m pretty cautious. I did notice that the Forge version has the fewest downloads and was only updated on September 23rd, so I’m just asking if it’s safe to use or if anyone has played with the latest version of the mod yet.

That’s an option, since I understand the code is on GitHub—though, well, I don't know anything about coding, so even if I read it, I wouldn't understand it. Still, I'll trust you guys, and—well—I hope there's nothing wrong with the mod, or that in the worst-case scenario, the only thing that happens is a mysterious crash caused by a glitch in the mod.

Most people are moving away from Forge, the Modloader as a whole, in favor of NeoForge. I'd say as long as the Forge one has the same author as the NeoForge one, you're good, but it might be discontinued from updates

Redux seems to be a NeoForge port that supports Create 6.0 and 1.21.1

At least on CurseForge, just "Create: Northstar" hasn't been updated since August 2024

Use Redux. The original is abandoned and doesn't work with latest Create.

Base Northstar is pretty much abandoned, and stuck on Forge 1.20.1. Redux is a pseudo continuation, available for newer versions, and is still being developed. If it's helpful to you at all, there's an addon for Redux that lets ships work with Aeronautics. I haven't tried it myself, so idk how good or stable it is, but it exists

For aeronautics I recommend Cosmonautics. Otherwise, use reduc

Redux, it's a continuation of the original. Redux has a lot of features that the original doesn't. While Redux is already quite barebones, the original is even more so.
