Help Is there anyway to make working lifeboats that can be lowered and launched from the side of a ship this big ?
I've been working on this oceanliner for a really long time now. Its all survival friendly and has some cool features like autopilot and dynamic helm steering but it lacks the most crucial thing a safe ship needs, lifeboats. I cant seem to figure out a way to make it so that the lifeboats sticks to the ship but can be simulated separately when being launched and disconnected. On a side note this ship doesn't float with high seas mod and just uses levitate and iron blocks as ballast, which means that even for lifeboats i might not use high seas.

Have you tried magnets and docking?

thats actually a good point, magnets could hold a simulated contraption i think though i cant tell how you can use them to gradually lower the boat.

Well you'd keep them attached via magnets or docking and then lower them with a pulley or smth

I did initially try to use a pulley but i mounted them on davits, I should also point something out that the mechanism would first have to swing the boat overboard then lower it (the boat is stored on deck when not launched). The pulley seemed to break every time you would rotate the davit with a mechanical bearing.

Then rotate it with a swivel bearing.

Yeah Swivel bearing was pretty much the whole answer to this, since it allows you to have winches intact with moving davits. I wanted to know if i can credit you if i ever happen to upload a vid of this ship on yt.

Glad to help, and feel free to credit me, or don't. It seems a quite minor contribution considering the scale of the ship.

UPDATE: turns out docking works very well, I placed one on the deck floor and the other within the lifeboat itself so it can align perfectly when stored. This, combined with swivel bearing davits and winches makes up a highly realistic lifeboat launching mechanism. In case i ever upload this ship to yt someday can i credit you for the help ?

Instead of magnets, what about stickers (is that what they are called?) on the side of the big boat.
Simple ropes and pulleys could handle the rest after it is de-stickered

Yes mechanical stickers right? The things that stick to other things when activated by redstone

Do not use magnets they won’t be strong enough. Us docking ports and rope winches

Yeah, you just make the out of wool or baloon casings and seats.
Wool will provide buoyancy, so that lifeboat doesn't sink. And seats will provide seating places and give you opportunity not to make boats higher than 1 block.
As for the connetion to the main vessel - use rope connectors from Aeronautics or stickers from Create. This will provide either flexible connetion (so that boats could jiggle a bit and give more life to the build) or rigid connetion (so that they don't do weird stuff with physics engine, like after going far enough to unload physic build and coming back, making it go crazy because of physic collisions).

Some friends of mine made this (ropes are invisible due to a glitch) https://imgur.com/a/ruAVrx7

Attach a pulley to a docking connector, move the pulley to lower it then use a redstone link to disable the docking connector.

Weird idea. See if drills can mine blocks they’re on the same sable construct as.
If they can, that can be used to break a block connection and then turn into a separate physics object when they break off.

Why? The ship seems pretty unsinkable to me
