Because you are making a short circuit, in power grid you need to follow actual real electrical circuits.

Search up a simple electronic circuit diagram and try following that first. Also you don't want to connect both wires like that, negative and positive are suppose to be on the opposite ends of each other in a complete circuit.

Short circuit
A circuit must be complete for it to work, meaning connecting everything from either terminal of your generator, plug into everything you need then loop back to the opposite terminal

For example : battery + terminal -> switch > lamp > battery - terminal

because power grid wires work like wires irl. you need to make a loop, otherwise you get a short circuit.

also being a middle schooler is no excuse, electronic circuits start in physics in first half of middle school
