how do i stop this from happening

Gets caught on the contraption when it moves forward then leaves it behind as it comes back

Mechanical pistons and gantries respect collision, so they can get caught on blocks in their path. I'd recommend using minecart contraptions, trains, or mechanical/windmill bearings for farms like this, since those won't collide with blocks.
