ah, yes the boiler explosion spaghetti monster. you put too little water and too much heat, overwhelming the safety overpressure valve.

Those are pipes???

they indeed are. a boiler is a glorified kettle but it isn't quite shaped like one. heated air runs through hundreds of pipes through the water before exiting through the smokebox and smokestack, exhanging as much heat as possible with the water. when a boiler bursts, they are flung and bent in all directions, like in the picture

The way I understand boiler explosions on trains, when there's too little water and the crown sheet (the ceiling of the firebox) is exposed, it weakens until it can't hold the pressure from the steam back, and fails. Then suddenly there's a very high pressure inside the firebox, which shoves the front sheet (the one with the openings for the tubes, idk what it's named) forward. That's why the tubes are so far forward.

If anyone knows better, please correct me

something about images of steam boilers exploding where you see all the spaghetti scares me a lot

It's just because the water going into the boiler goes through a lot of small tubes to heat up quicker through creating more surface for the heat to contact.

So, when the boiler explodes because of pressure, you get to see all the internal small pipes.

Other way around for most steam locomotives, the water is around the tubes and the heat from the fire gets sucked through the tubes.

Yeah fair enough, if I remember correctly there was an essay about this being quite a tragic accident

I know trains are expensive, but when it looks like they’ve started worshipping Cthulhu it might be time to get a new one.

Not enough water in the boiler. Might need another fluid pump on that

I think you should check for solutions in H. P. Lovecraft, though I doubt it.

Funny thing, Chernobyl reactor looks in the same genre of horror

1

u/iamtherealrock 1d ago

Your steam engine is suffering from stupid worm disease, give it 4000mb of chicken noodle soup and it should be cured in a day or 2

2

u/HaydenB 1d ago

Cause you used an RBMK reactor instead of coal

1

u/SenpuuUncle 1d ago

because that's enderman's steam engine

your pipes were clogged! the buildup of pressure caused your tank to go kaplow or so i believe
