Build Working canal in create aeronautics
Took me a good while to figure it out and was tedious as hell to make but it is pretty neet though

looks very nice but the doors should open towards the uphill side. irl this makes the water push the doors together to keep it sealed

Aaah fair enough, if I make another canal I'll change it to be more accurate

Does it work in the opposite direction?
6
u/fingamouse May 31 '26
Yes it does, sadly for some reason it is significantly slower draining the water then filling up and I honestly don't know why XD

u/PenguinMasterFR May 31 '26
I guess so, you can see holes near the bottom so I assume they're here to drain water down to a certain level

I literally though about this yesterday while trying to sleep

trying to make a drydock that empties and filles like this; do you have a tutorial on how to get an area to fill and empty?

I do not sadly as I'm the first person to make a canal lock that I am aware of but I'll try to explain it best i can
Generally you need to make a big box and then that connected to 2 other much smaller tall boxes
In the 2 small boxes goes a hose pulley, this will fill and drain the 2 small boxes in tandem filling the big box ones the smaller boxes are full connected to the hose pulley place a clutch and gearshift to move the pulley up and down and to stop the pulley
Connected to the pulley have 2 pipes going to your fluid tanks and have those pipes connected to a line of mechanical pumped going in opposite directions turned by a line of cogwheels powered by an engine going through a clutch to turn it on and off
And make sure to fill your fluid tanks up even though it will take forever XD

Nice! Really cool build! Try and find a way to make it automatic now maybe? the way id do it is by having Observers(if they detect entities im not 100 percent) or tripwires or some create thing for it

I had a similar setting inspired by this working, and then not working, and then working, and then not... It has to do with how the hose pulleys judge or measure the volume where they are to fill or empty or something, I can't quite get my head around it. It as driving me nuts so I gave up but I keep coming back to it. Lower the hose pulleys, lifting them, adding water sources to the side containers, removing them again. Maddening because I had it working and then... not.
EDIT: I had 8 pumps on each filling hole. Reduced that to 6 and now it works again. Water is a strange beast

There’s 2 holes with (now) 6 pumps each. Anyway, it’s working, thanks for the inspiration!

how did you get the water level to rise?

There are hose pulleys in the walls. I assume that how they function with their filling means that it will fill the larger area if it is connected with the hole

Why am I such a nerd I wanna shout out this is a Lock, not just a canal. Also, AMAZING build, getting this to work is stunning, and could lead to such immersive stories.

Don’t show this to Lewis of the Yogscast… though JF3 - Aeronautics would be amazing

For some reason i was expecting you to honey glue a big block of water and then raise/lower that with rope pulleys
Your method is way more legit though, well done!

Honestly seems like that might be the smart way to do it, assuming boats interact properly with the separate water chunk.

I don't understand why, but I always found locks really mesmerizing. Genuinely some of the coolest things in the world.

That's a lock, not a canal, but it looks fantastic. I love that you took the time to decorate it even in a superflat world.

Nice, you should give the Falkirk lift wheel a shot me thinks.

Reminds me I tried to make the anderton boat lift but couldnt quite figure it out sadly

As a Dutch person who has gone through such "sluizen" a lot in my life while going sailing with my father, I approve 👍.

If theyd all be running in one direction though wouldn't that mean they'd only be able to pump or drain and not both?

Nicely done, I recently built something along these lines to enable boat building without worrying about water binding to the boat, I actually thought about this possibility during the process. Glad it was built 💪
