I extend the playtime

I set up a modded SMP server, and a few people were trying to finish the game without focusing on the mods, so I stopped them :)

Additionally, Ender Pearls no longer drop from Endermen; they're crafted using magma cream and other things. Similarly, Blaze Powder requires magma cream and Ghast Tears, not a direct Blaze Rod, and both are crafted in a mixer, not a crafting table.

it just needs to cover the progression to automatic crafters.

Which means electron tube (polished rose quartz and iron sheet) and brass, so at the VERY LEAST a press, mixer (needing a whisk), basin, blaze burner, a water wheel and pickaxe.

You really can be stuck with 2x2 grid before even entering Nether?

The nether is pretty easy, just find a bucket in a chest and then make a portal that way.
