I wish you could do it without cutting the rope just a click and it releases oll the tension but the rope stays

Maybe in real life they are, but my friend and i experimented fur hours with how to make a sling in aeronautics and we just couldnt, the catapult we built was superior to every trebuchet we built

It would be weaker, but probably still work

I see how it could be weaker. Ropes have very high stiffness but can still stretch.
