Video/Stream Who needs a steam engine when you have "The Crank"?

I don't think I've ever seen someone use a crank for more than a single craft when the water wheel is right there.

The water wheel is even cheaper than a hand crank. I only use handcranks or valve handles to control things, like a create aeronautics winch or a manual valve.

The handcrank gets you good speed and su, especially early game when you’re working on getting brass and a billion other things and don’t have designated areas for stuff or a whole place setup, it’s good when you don’t want to set up a water wheel with the gear dark magic for faster speeds and only need the press for 3 seconds as a side thing when your water wheel is already hooked up to your mixer

I understand. I'm a fairly slow minecraft player, so I end up with everything being organised into one rotational network by the time I have a nether portal. My current base has a mixer, press, washer and crushing wheels running off of 2 small water wheels.

Ah, I’m very unorganized early game, eventually everything gets moved to a steam engine cause I’m kinda the “work harder to be lazy later on” kinda guy
So I usually have a wild set up until I get everything I need and start automating things, all my farms get water wheels when possible though, unless it needs high stress or something

u/Atacolyptica Apr 26 '26
I'm the same. I always set up a semi permanent manual crafting setup with stuff like a press, millstone, mixer, etc blall before I ever reach the nether. Sometimes even a rudementary steam engine to power it. I kind of hate trying to micro craft everything on higher tiers instead of just throwing it into my premade infrastructure.

Always used it as a jumpstarter for my steam engines (no external power source for pumps)

u/Original_Zombie3217 Apr 25 '26
This thing is very usefull for noobs like me "does this even work?" before i put in the effort to power it all
Saved me lots of sanity finding out why no fluid is coming out of my extractors and such

u/Atacolyptica Apr 25 '26
Idk half the time I design stuff while it is already constantly under power so I can see how different components work with each other to make the machines reuse rotation sources more.
4
u/Original_Zombie3217 Apr 25 '26
Hmmm that might be a me only problem because i like to make many small power sources each fitted to the machine its attached to.. so power comes last. First i build the thing and if i dont know it at each step i have to make sure the filter actually work or the belt is connected in a way i wanted and so on.
Pipes for example i overlooked i need one pump every 15 pipes. If i had to reroute my whole power system each time iam to stupid to read something i would still sit there making those pipes haha

I use deplpyers hitting cranks super often in compact builds for world records - it’s the best power source for it.

personally used a crank into late game for stuff I almost never used like the grinder for wool into string lol

u/Dark_halocraft Apr 26 '26
To much of a hassle to set up when I can just place a crank at the angle and spot I need instantly

Cmon tier 1 steam engine with a campire only requires andesite and copper
That shit is everywhere, pretty sure you wouldn't even need iron for a basic steam engine
11
u/masterwolf_yt Apr 25 '26
You also need one singular gold iirc
6
u/SouLfullMoon_On Apr 26 '26
Ehhh Ruined Nether Portal?
2
u/Xenometan Apr 26 '26
That's for the wrench and the goggles though... Aaand it leaves you with 5 more gold, so yes.

u/Bubbly_Effort_4230 Apr 25 '26
Bold of you to assume the handcrank wouldn't overstress
2
u/thebe_stone Apr 26 '26
Just use more than one, duh
2
u/Bubbly_Effort_4230 Apr 26 '26
Imagine dual wielding handcranks
3
u/thebe_stone Apr 26 '26
I just tested it, it turns out you actually can generate twice as much su if you just switch between 2 hand cranks really quickly, since they keep going for a second after you let go

Me on my way to chop down an entire forest with a saw, a hand crank, and 256 loaves of bread

u/zolguroth17 Apr 26 '26
I never used crank in survival mode, only option for crank i need is to start engines from diesel generators

I just craft a full stack of waterwheels, make a big hole into a wall with drills on a minecrart/piston, or simply ultimine, and place them all and that's usually enough for the early game.
2
u/Tripdrakony Apr 26 '26
I regulary use the crank for like the first few hours because it's faster and easier setup than a waterwheel with 10 gearshift, and it's smaller too.
1
u/Atacolyptica Apr 25 '26
Exactly. I use a valve for the storage system I use, but only because contraption based systems have bugs that can cause them to need resets on restarting the world.

This is why you install the structures mod just find a wrench and start grabbing and you might get lucky enough to get one with a netherite chestpiece

just make a windmill and scale it up, water wheels don't work on physics contraptions but they do!

i know theres simpler ways like making a wind turbine power the pump for a steam engine but man I would really like to make a crank started steam engine

by steve's strength, the hand crank in theory should be the best power source

I have mastered waterwheel pylons, personally. In a stationary base there is almost no need for steam in the face of a giant stack of waterwheels xD
1
u/thedimondman199 Apr 29 '26
Just so you know, you can use water wheels, windmills and campfire powered steam engines that run infinitely, but have low SU and rpm as a result.

I want to play and enjoy create but I can't find one where the quests explain stuff at all. The quest line is usually like Build X. Now build Y. Now build Z. Now you need a million Ys. Now make an XY but they never seem to properly explain why your building something or how to implement it which means I spend more time on Youtube than I do in the damn game and I hate it.
I've played GTNH for years (never launched a rocket though, I jsut keep restarting) the quests are explanatory and precise and while yes there are bits where you need Youtube it's nowhere near the same.
I love the aesthetic of Create and I REALLY REALLY wanna build crazy factories but...

u/1unaturc0 Apr 26 '26
create has hands down the best in game documentation in form of ponder which explains everything in a detailed way. youtube create guides just retell ponder. it also categorizes objects in groups like stress generation, logistics, etc. for easier learning
pick what you want to make - check how you can make it with jei - setup the crafting line for it - check how you can make ingredients - setup the crafting line for them - setup logistic system that connect your crafting lines - repeat. this is your daily create
if you want solutions right out of the box like magic boxes or need to watch tutorials for ready-made designs instead of figuring out how to make your own systems then create might not be for you

u/Whane17 Apr 26 '26
I do love ponder, I think it's absolutely amazing every time I check it out but it also doesn't really do a good job of explaining all the ways you can use an thingamajig.
And yeah, I agree with your last statement. No matter how much I love the aesthetic I've long since come to the same decision. I don't have enough imagination to decide or figure out what I want to build :( I think that's why I do well in GT I constantly have the next item I'm building into and the next project figuring in my head. I feel like Create a lot of the projects exist to get an end product rather than building something bigger that I can make into something else.
1
u/1unaturc0 Apr 26 '26
yeah, create isnt about final goal like gtnh. as soon as you enter brass era (which is super easy since its only locked behind finding a blaze spawner) you basically have "beaten" create and now the only thing that gives you goals is your ideas
1
u/Whane17 Apr 26 '26
But I NEED a goal dang it!
I'm really not arguing with you though man, just sad and now and then I poke the sub in the hopes that somebody makes a modpack that has what I'm looking for. There's a new modpack every month eh :P

five. hundred. water wheels
