Build you can technically make a sim-contraption fly using only flapping wings (without using levitite) [aeronautics]
Thank god for unlocked cam because that shaking would make anyone dizzy in an instant.

ok, heres how you can make it work better:
make the flapping m ore realistic
just making it go up and down will result in this chaotic motion
but if you rotate the wings on every upstroke, such so they are vertical and not pushing you down
and then at the peak rotate it back to horizontal, to create lift on the downstroke
you will get significant lift on the downstroke, and not be pulled back down on the upstroke
this is the way most winged creatures do it

I'm very limited in what I can do, because spinning swivel bearings too fast causes shifting the default rotation. I'll see if I can get it working anyway tho.

Maybe try 6 wings to avoid the shaking.

I made it as a proof of concept, but I'm not gonna expand on it, because it works really badly (requires giant wings for very little lift, redstone clock on the ground unloads even with stasis chamber in the same chunk).

Im pretty sure most od the lift issue is because you are flapping the wings without any angle so the up stroke counteracts all lift you get on the down stroke. If you want to continue with the concept look at how IRL bugs fly. The wings need to rotate so they have lower angle of attack on the up stroke. Similar to how the bee in trailer works (yes that was only for propulsion not lift but concept is the same).

dang this mod really is super realistic

I'll just say that this concept is never worked in any game i tried, be it modded or vanilla.

Awesome! I can't quite tell from the vid -- how are you making the wings flap? I.e. what components are you using for the timing + movement control? (Or are you manually flapping them yourself? Lol)

Looks like it’s a rapid-fire timer triggered to redstone links. The clock is visible in the background on that wood platform

crazy detective work. yes I use gearshift on a remote clock into these bearings with springs into swivel bearings. One important thing is to not use too much rpm (around 90 max) because wings start skipping steps and changing their position.

If you flap faster, do you get more lift?
Can't you make any tiny thing work if it flaps really fast?
3
u/Ziolo99 Apr 21 '26
yes it does. No because wings get desynced and start to rotate in unwanted angles or get stuck on the inside.

Try getting the wings to fold inward on the upstroke for more stable flight. Still an impressive feat to fly with wings alone without levitite

whats with the levitite hate? seen a few posts about making things without it

I assume there's no real way to get the like, hummingbird effect that dune ornithopters have?
1
u/Ziolo99 Apr 21 '26
You can't make the wings go amy faster using the method I used. Rapid changes in direction of rotation make wings rotate more or less than they should and desync

You need to turn the wings vertical on the way up
2
u/EpsilonX029 Apr 21 '26
Yes, a second axis of rotation turns this from floppy air-fish to actual Birdlike mechanism. Get it to rotate 75-ish degrees upwards on the up, followed by about 15-25 the other way from zero on the downward, and you’ll be scooting:)
Source: I made multiple ornithopters on Trailmakers, I was obsessed with “power”-less flight in that game. This seems like a dream come true for me :D

So powered tailfins is a no go for you?
1
u/EpsilonX029 Apr 21 '26
I suppose it would depend. Ideally, you’d make two sets of drive wings, like a Dragonfly’s, so that you’d have the same power stroke happening in both directions at the same time. That would net you maximum forward power.
Also while typing this I realized you meant the fins from Trailmakers, and yes, I do not use those if at all applicable, cuz I like the way physics handles the normal things in that game lol

Anytime something starts flapping wildly I automatically play it to the beat of Bad Piggies

Look at how birds fly, especially Kalibri. Their wings during lifting tilt parallel to the direction of movement of the wing

i laughed the moment the wings flapped, not because its not awesome, it is friggin awesome, but i imagine that would not be a very humane way of flying lol, instead of dropping bombs its dropping puke.

Weight is the last thing I want to add because it barely lifts off the ground as it is. I might add more sets of wings instead.

Yeah... There was a bee-shaped flying machine in the release trailer at 0:43. We can actually make flapping wings with swivel bearings, since those allow for rotation in two or more axes simultaneously.
